I got that tattooed over after like 8-9 years when they were no longer super red but still were (still are) raised. The artist was really familiar with tattooing over scars so I didnt have any problems as far as blowouts or difficult healing. But HOLY FUCK it hurt to get them tattooed. Some of them were so bad that my nerves were affected and it suuuucked to get them tattooed. So please make sure your scars are old enough where they dont change that much anymore to get them tattooed over and be prepared for a sucky session.

Initially I was taken aback by the whole 'charging for an apprenticeship' thing, but after hearing both of you explain I totally get it. I think a lot of the hate for this concept may come from the traditional idea of an apprentice- a grunt laborer that's used and abused until they're able to fend for themselves. It doesn't sound like that is the case for the woman in the video or Kirk- definitely more of a 'schooling' type of experience- and in that frame, charging $ makes perfect sense.

13:36 - I’m not an artist; I work in tech, but I both agree and disagree with the idea of a paid apprenticeship. If a “tattoo college” popped up charging $120k for a 4-year program, no one would blink. I’m self-taught in tech, and I could run circles around someone with a 4-year degree-but it took grinding. I started small in IT, built on that with military experience, and kept learning through free education by working multiple jobs along the way. In the end, we all become professionals in our craft, but the choice is: Yale or Jordan’s shop? $100k education or paid experience? I said I disagree, and I’ll keep this short since most won’t read it. If people are willing to pay to learn from an artist, it’s probably worth it-just like how certain colleges charge more for the name. The reason tattooing isn’t a college major? Because the education system knows it can’t brainwash tattoo artists. They just want to learn their craft and get paid, not jump through the hoops of college indoctrination. If I had unlimited money, I’d start a formal tattoo apprenticeship college in a heartbeat. I agree that we need to create more sustainable careers for artists by adding business knowledge-teaching them how to negotiate, land sponsorships, and even become suppliers for their local area. It’s not just about mastering the craft; it’s about building a foundation that ensures long-term success. There should be multiple paths to becoming an artist, whether through apprenticeship, self-study, or formal education. And who knows-maybe one day, Alumni Day at a tattoo college could be a full-blown festival, with former students coming back to celebrate, share their growth, and inspire the next generation.

The reason people say something about the whole apprenticeship thing is because that would only happen in America. Everywhere else that would be considered illegal. If you work, you get paid. It's that simple. And apprenticeship means you get paid while you're learning on the job. If you're paying for an education, that means college or university, and considering that tattoo studios are not accredited schools or universities, they shouldn't be charging for education. I'm based in the UK, and it is illegal to have someone work for you and not pay them regardless if you use the excuse but I'm teaching them stuff. No, that's not how that works. Hence the word apprenticeship is you get paid while you learn.

Im tired of the apprenticeship conversation. I went to nursing school and paid a lot of money to work in the hospital. By my last semester I was pulling 12 hour shifts doing assessments, med passes, patient education, etc. and then going home and writing pages and pages of care plans. And I was paying to do it because that’s what you have to do to get an education. Maybe not a perfect system but I just find it silly to be shocked or outraged that someone may be charged money for their education

On the apprenticeship thing, folks need to realize this is like a less formal version of a trade school, of course you have to pay the instructor. Instructors, be up with your expectations that way the student knows, how long, how much and what type of grunt work they are exchanging for your knowledge and expertise.
