Antz has a weird political subtext to it, everything about that movie from the character design to the choice of voice actors is so weird, it's hard not to like. Bugs life is seven samurai for kids, so that has that going for it. Also I'd like to suggest the animated films April and Extraordinary World (2015) and The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985) both really interesting and underappreciated animated films

I saw this at the cinema. It was a mystery movie night so we were amongst the first people to see it. The animation style was very new. Almost everything coming before had been 2d . The casting of this film is excellent. Every character plays on the strengths and characteristics of the voice actors. It's a great film.

Your thoughts were very interesting... Having grown up with this movie but not seeing a bugs life until I was a late teen, I really enjoy this over the Pixar rendition. I think part of it is also the "Woody Allen" of it all: he's a very different kind of personality for this kind of movie, and if you know any if his movies I think you'd get a bit more of his personality throughout the narrative. Either way, great reaction and keep up the awesome work!

For some reason, we had a VHS of it in it's original language in my house here in Mexico. First: "Why?" is the worst question a capitalist workhorse could ever hear from a worker, and I love the guy's immediate fearful reaction 'cuz he didn't have an answer. XD Second: I gotta comment that I feel like you two missed the point of the main antagonist talking about washing away the filth and talking about how his plan doesn't make sense. The movie is a criticism of unfettered capitalism and has a clear-cut superliminal communist message. Mandible represents - especially notably in America - the ultra-wealthy and how they scheme and manipulate the "lower classes" (working class) to further their own ends in a greed-fueled belief that only their desires matter while denigrating what got them there in the first place - the workers. Mandible is of the belief that his class - the soldiers, a stand-in for the wealthy and the military-industrial complex - is the pinnacle of what should be and that they need to be rid of the "lessers" - the workers, the working poor, etc. - to thrive, when these people only hold their position because of happenstance (the soldiers, being chosen at random to be a soldier; the wealthy, more often than not, born into their wealth). In the end, the working class won out over the elites by banding together and - quite literally - rising up, and that's the point that the movie is trying to make: that the workers are stronger than the elites when they are in unison. From a messaging standpoint, the movie is brilliant. Graphically, it may not have aged well; but I still love it.

So ANTZ and Bugs Life are similar in the sense that the ants are being oppressed by a system or antagonist that they would eventually have to revolt against. Here it’s general Mandible. With Bugs Life, it was Hopper. There’s also a similar theme of encouraging individualism. Z and Flick are both sort of outcasts who are different than the rest of the colony in some way and have the courage to challenge the status quo. I love both movies but they’re definitely for very different audiences (as is usually the case between Dreamworks and Disney) lol. Antz is more adult. Bugs Life is a cleaned up, cuter take on a similar issue. Lol

Antz came out first. It was supposed to come out early 1999, but when Pixar refused to delay A Bug's Life from Prince of Egypt's release, they got petty and moved Antz's release a few weeks before ABL, lol Also, Antz is a DreamWorks only film. Universal wasn't involved with the studio til the late 2010's I think. It's still jarring watching a DW film that starts with Universal

The story of Antz and Bug's Life is more complicated. It goes back to when left Paramount to become head of Disney. He brought one of his top people from Paramount, Katzenberg, with him. Katzenberg was put in charge of Disney movies and TV. Katzenberg did a great job, turning around what had been seen as a failing studio. They went from last to first among the major studios in box office. He created Touchstone pictures there. The so called Disney Renaissance in animation was under Katzenberg, which covered Little Mermaid through Tarzan. He was also the one at Disney who recognized the important of computer animation and made the exclusive deal to be Pixar’s distributor. Then the #1 guy at Disney died in an accident and Katzenberg wanted that job. Eisner picked someone else. Katzenberg left and co-founded DreamWorks. Eisner did not like this and withheld a bunch of bonus money that was due to Katzenberg. (Katzenberg later sued and got his money, which was a huge amount). DreamWorks made their first movie, The Prince of Egypt, and set a release date. Then Eisner set Bug’s Life release data to be the same weekend as The Prince of Egypt. DreamWorks asked Disney to not do that but Eisner would not budge, so DreamWorks pushed back Prince. Then Eisner scheduled something to conflict with that too. Katzenberg responded by pushing up the release date of Antz, which has been scheduled for several months after Bug’s, to be before Bug’s. Lord Farquaad in Shrek is widely believed to be based on Eisner because of all the above. Anyway, Katzenberg knew of Bug's before Antz started. On the other hand given the animation technology of the time the good choice if you wanted decent looking anthropomorphized animals was ants. Furry animals would look crappy, and other non-furry animals either wouldn't anthropomorphize well or had too many negative associations for an audience to empathize with. Ants are simple enough to animate well, anthropomorphize well, and have a fairly positive reputation except when they are in your house.

The story behind how this movie and A Bug's Life are so similar is because back when Jeffrey katzenberg still work at Disney he was part of a board meeting talking about some of the movies that they wanted to make in the future in A Bug's Life was one of the movies that they talked about when Jeffrey katzenberg left Disney to go start his own company DreamWorks that was one of the ideas he stole and that's the reason why Antz and A Bug's Life have so much similarities to them.

If I recall it was actually a Disney employee who got fired and decided to get revenge by copying Bugs, but not certain if they were like a higher up like producer or if it was an animator. The animation between this movie and Ice Age are very wonky but some how cool which allows the movies to be unique. And probably helped the design for future movies. Antz is clearly an adult animated movie and Bugs a kids film. I never picked up on Antz being a war film, but compare it to live action war films and it is noticeable. Especially the themes and plot. Another ant movie if you aren’t tired of ants is Ant Bully. It’s animation is very Jimmy Neutron/Nickelodeon show vibe, but still good.

Funny you mention the Ant Bully looking like Jimmy Neutron, because apparently it was done by the same animation studio that did Jimmy Neutron (the film and series), DNA Productions. Sadly the studio is closed due to the box office failure of _The Ant Bully_

I prefer A Bug’s Life over Antz, in my opinion, but this is still a good animated film and a decen start to the career of DreamWorks Animation! Speaking of which, this is the film that began the rivalry between Disney and DreamWorks.

Antz is definitely a strange movie, but in a very fun way. XD I agree that it’s probably best not to compare it to A Bugs Life just because ants are the stars in both movies. They’re so different from each other, this movie handles way different themes. As always thank you for giving us another superb reaction! Can’t get enough!

I would say that with Antz, its message is a coup de tat from within its own hierarchy, with mandible using fear tactics for his termite war, and lies and false promises with the digging of the mega tunnel, in order to create a colony of superior ants, while with A Bug's Life, the oppressors are of a different species of insect, offering protection to a seemingly weak and innocent colony of ants with no sense of self defense, and using that weakness to the grasshopper's advantage. Both movies seem to reflect real life history in some form or another.

One thing I had heard with Antz (not seen a comment on this yet). One of the heads of depts/producers (someone with a big title - Katzenberg I think) had left Disney around the same time they started producing A Bugs Life so already knew about A Bugs Life. That same guy went to (or even co-founded I think) Dreamworks who produced Antz, so took the basic idea to compete with Disney's A Bugs Life around a similar release date, even though the storylines don't really match. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong if anyone knows any different - it's just what I'd seen somewhere a long time ago, so don't know how much truth there is to it.

I feel like this movie stamped a few habits in me. The "Ants go marching song", Bala's bubble-water drink (heck knows I've done that multiple times as a kid and even now, I just forgot why until now), the foods (that plastic sandwich lol), and many more. But Bugs Life also have me memories too. I guess in terms of what I remember more, it's Antz

I like both. And while they're similar I don't really compare them too much because they feel pretty different. Bug's Life is more silly and Antz feels a little more serious with it tackling things like death and such more heavily. But both are funny and enjoyable though :)

I think both Bug's Life and Antz are pretty low-tier animated films. Bug's Life is one of Pixar's thematically weakest films, the premise of grasshopper oppressors is not a good allegory, then the movie clumsily tackles this innovation vs tradition side-theme that's never fully resolved. The whole story can be summed up by: Ants being too stupid to realize they are strong in numbers? Meanwhile Antz is over here with a terrible art-style, awkward disjointed pacing, and the story-telling tackles adult themes but without adult nuance and ends up being predictable and cliche, making it confusing on who this movie was made for.

Antz is better on a deeper level and is alot more adult with great writing, but both are good movies, Bugs Life is more adventurous but kinda 'Disney'... Saw both in the cinema, and both were worth the ticket fee. Thing is.. you have to remember this was Dreamworks first movie... so its got some roughness to it, especially given the only other guys around were Pixar, who were ahead of them by a decent amount at this point. Just have to look at Antz and then some thing like HTTYD... Dreamworks has come a LONG way, but their movies are still very recognizable Dreamworks.

This reaction was funny and the commentary was hilarious. I know exactly what you mean, the real teeth thing drives me nuts. It looks like Final fantasy and other games or movies the characters have braces on their teeth it's awful. No offense to people who have braces, but I don't wanna see grey teeth and dark voids inside a mouth. This movie was nothing like I thought. The plot, the swearing, the bawdy theme, this is adult animation of the for teens variety. Not like Sausage party that was straight adults lol. I can't unknow that movie. Great reaction. Glad to finally have me time to see it. I've got another 5 days sitting about to go on. 🎉 And 😭
