For me, it's not the absolute depth of his voice, but the resonance and tone. Geoff is my all-time favorite.

And the arrangements. They keep getting better. The fact that he knows precisely *how* to apply that amazing voice is just as incredible as the voice itself.

As usual, this is a showstopper. A fun little aside: he had to raid his fathers tool shed for all of the tools just like he did for when he did 16 Tons. Originally the Geoff on the stool was not going to hold the pickax but they changed it just before filming. (This was another solo - actually a duo - effort by Geoff and his wife Kathy (with a little bit of help from Layne moving his junk around and son William “helping”.) K was the film crew. Because this was filmed around Valentine’s Day every venue that they checked was filled. So he ended up going to PattyCake Studios which is co-owned by the beatboxer and they ended up having to go down to the basement storage room and move all of Layne ‘s junk ( I mean valuable stuff) so that they could have this little teeny corner to film in. I like that at the very end he picks that pickax up and pounds it on the ground just like they did all through 16 Tons. (And there I go again referring to him as they. I know better, but it’s so darn convincing. )

That's awesome. It shows how much they love doing this stuff.

It's not just his range, it's how clean every note is and how fast he can transition between them. Oh, and this was filmed in a storage locker because every other place he wanted to use was booked for weddings on 2-22-22.

We sent him back to the mines. He put his foot in it when he did Sixteen Tons. I remember Jimmy Dean's show and him singing his song. House of the Rising Sun is another one you should react to.

I've seen all his solo stuff. Been following him and voiceplay since they were on the sing off. Love his stuff

When Jimmy Dean made this song he said he wanted to end it with one hell of a man. But back in our day you could not put any bad language on the air so it was big big man

I agree with you about the high notes. If you want to have your mind blown with his range, watch Voiceplay sing Elvira. It's a live version on KZbin so the sound acoustics aren't great, but what Geoff does at the end of the video is something I've never seen anyone else do.

The thing about this song is, Big John's story could apply to any number of men back in the heyday of mining - tough guys, but who gave their lives to save others in one of the many mine tragedies that took place.

Geoff, Avi and Tim all have such different bass tones. Geoff's higher to low...not the lowest are my favorite tones in his voice. The lowest seem a bit ...forced? To my ears. Avi's bass is something else...kind of soothing. And Tim's seems more "rough and real?" One of Tim's fans has a KZbin channel MarciaG. She requests solo songs and had Tim sing this. You might want to go on your own time and give a listen. Just him sitting at a piano at home.

When he would go "forced" that was a vocal fry note to emphasize the line. The note he was using was an F#1 using fry, which he CAN hit clean if he chooses... he just chose fry to give that emphasis and angst of the song.

@@johndeeregreen4592 don't get me wrong it is amazing how low he can go. In fact I could listen to Geoff, Avi and Tim all day long. My favorite singing voice to listen to is bass. I know so many are amazed at the high tenors in the acapella groups but for me...those guts singing bass..wow

@@brendagrothier967, I do feel Geoff uses those fry notes too much. Avi and Tim use them, but very sparingly. Like Avi's surprise C2 fry note at the beginning of his feature on "Ring of Fire". That was tasteful and caught you off-guard.
