When MMM debuted they came from a small company, everybody thought they were older than they actually were, and Hwasa was so hated because of her looks that people petitioned for her to get kicked out of the group. It's wild how much MMM has went through in the early days of debut and to look at them now. Piano Man and Mr. Ambiguous (the bop that they are) were not a hit and they only really took off during the Uhm Oh Ah Yeah and You're the Best era. These girls were told that they were not pretty enough to be idols (fans hate on the CEO so much for saying this to them but I think he was right in saying so and he was being realistic. MMM, at that time, were not NOT the standard of Korean beauty and trying to lie to them and tell them that they could make it otherwise would've stunted their growth to who they are now). Because of that they had to catch the audience's attention elsewhere--good songs and a good performance and man did they do it. It's why I love these girls so much. Not only do they continue to hold the banner of "self-love" but they understand and continue to grow as artists and people. They love to perform, the love the music, and they're absolute oddballs. Seeing how they started always makes me tear up, I think there's a video out there that really chronicles how much MMM has went through from being absolute unknowns from an unknown company to what they have now (Yamachan When Mamamoo Stunned the K-pop Industry with their Work Ethic). It's amazing and I can't wait to see the new heights they'll reach!

i hate how the ceo said that but also it gave them the chance to work on there vocals
@kamuigrey45974 жыл бұрын
I'm thankful that their CEO told them that. It sound scary and almost demeaning, but it was the thruth. The audience was used to SNSD (I'm a SONE, but SM got the visual nailed down), and most of all girl groups kinda followed suit. Mamamoo came from the left side in so many ways, from their looks to their music; and it was a gamble to debut a group which so different from what was the norm back then. He prepared the girls of what was coming, including what the audience will say.
@dmo90494 жыл бұрын
Spot on! Im not made at the CEO for his comment on their looks either. It's a tough business and you need to know what you are walking into. As we all know there is a whole ugly side to KPOP. As someone who has interviewed and hired a lot of people, you know to hire not only talent but potential. RBW nails it everytime with their artists.
@wil60644 жыл бұрын
The CEO didn't told them straight out that they weren't pretty tho, he told them that they weren't model looking like so many other female idols that are tall and skinny so they would have to find a way to get past those looks and preconceived expectations in K-Pop girl groups. It wasn't a bad thing.
@Superion744 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that CEO told them the truth instead of sugar coating it. While it may seemed cruel, it's also reality in an entertainment industry that was (and still is) dominated by women who adhere to the Korean standard of beauty, and Mamamoo doesn't have it. What they do have, though, is abundance of talents, stage presence, and incredible vocals. When these are added to their hard works and never-say-die attitude, it makes sense how they went from absolute unknowns to one of the top girl groups in Kpop right now.

In Moonbyul's case, she really had to pitch her voice up in the beginning of their career. It was a strain but she had to fit into that 'girl group' image because of the gender standards. They had to really be careful of how they portrayed themselves because they came from no money, and despite their talents, their image could make or break them (I'm sure you have been told time and time again how much Hwasa struggled, and still does to this day). After the successes of UOAY and YTB, you can really see how their rising popularity attributed to their own growth and individuality on stage. They really blossomed at the end of 2016 with Decalcomanie, I must say.

Bumkey was the featured artist in the first song, yeah. Its name is "don't be happy" and the mv isn't the whole song, since they wanted to squeeze in that amazing intro at the end. Bumkey is a pretty well-known korean r&b artist. I believe he knew kim dohoon, one of rbw's ceos, since pretty much all the artists that appeared in "mr ambiguous" were doing a favor for him If you ever have time for a full hour and a half long show i definitely suggest the first episode of yu huiyeoul's sketchbook that mamamoo were on. It had multuple artists, with each one doing a collab with the artist before them, doing an interview with the host, then doing a collab with the artist after them. Bumkey was the artist before mamamoo, they did "all of me" together and i still dig that cover up on a regular basis And then k will is another amazing singer and i def suggest adding him to your list if you want to check out more male singers. I saw someone mentioned "please don't" and that song and its mv are still so relevant even today

Yes, Wheein had the fro, I think she looked good with it actually. These two predebut songs had the featured artists to help promote MMM. Moonbyul was still finding her rap style at this time. That is why it sounds so different from now. Moonbyul had originally trained to be a vocalist but the company "asked" her to be a rapper in order to debut because they already had very strong vocalists.

The reasons they sound kinda 'weird' or 'different' in Peppermint Chocolate is because their singing voice doesn't match what is showed on the screen. The rap at 9:24 is done by Hwasa, and at 9:38 by Moonbyul (+ a bit of Hwasa in the end) but they only showed Moonbyul on video. Also from 10:55 to 11:04 Hwasa is singing, not Wheein. These pre-debut MVs can be pretty confusing for this aspect (Don't Be Happy, too), I'm not sure why they edited them like that, my guess is that the people in charge of the MVs didn't really know their voices that well yet.

@TheNocturnalFey4 жыл бұрын
Mamamoo came from a really small company but their CEOs are known as producers and composers for big k-artists even before RBW was built. So I think they used the connection in the industry for their pre-debut and debut projects to help the girls. Bumkey, K.Will, and Wheesung are all really known veteran singers in the industry. In their Mr. Ambiguous music video, there are a lot of known personalities (mostly musicians) like Baek Ji Young (the prankster), Rhymer, and K. Will and Wheesung were there as well. But since Mamamoo's sound is a bit different from the usual kpop or at least the trend back then, they didn't really took off immediately, not until Um Oh Ah Yeh. Many people think they are an older group because of their concept. Then, joining Immortal Songs 2 also really help them gain general public exposure and where they started to get known for their vocal talent. The general public and other veteran singers they're with on IS2 started calling them "BeLisMamoo" which means "Believe and Listen to Mamamoo". So, MAMAMOO really started and came from nothing and it's just their talents that really helped them get to where they are now.

Bumkey and K.Will are famous vocalists in SK, so having them collab with MAMAMOO as new upcoming gg got them critics interest and some anticipation but they didn't take off in popularity until Um Oh Ah Yeah and You're The Best in 2016. Mamamoo even said they were in danger of disbanding bc their early albums didn't do so well.
@kudgeond7554 жыл бұрын
Listen to these songs a couple of times and you won't be able to get them out of your head. They're still my go-to songs in between comebacks and never fail to get me chair dancing or bopping around the room. Mamamoo didn't make much of an impression in kpop until Um Oh Ah Yeah. By then they had a better rep among their colleagues, senior artists and the general public because of their appearances on Immortal Songs than they did for their early retro singles among kpop fans. They seem to have established themselves as artists before becoming popular as an idol group. At this time Moonbyul obviously hadn't found her "voice" in both a vocal sense and as an artist. Of all the members she's the one who's come the farthest in her artistic development and it's been fun and satisfying to follow her development. As they used to say, she's come a long way, baby. New moomoos tend to look at early MMM MVs and performances on Immortal Songs and ask why Moonbyul isn't singing or rapping the way she does these days but if you remind yourself, as you did, that they were a new group under a new label starting from scratch with few resources (financial or staff) other than the skills they had to work with at that time you can better appreciate the talent, passion and excitement they brought to the table from the get go and marvel at what they've done and how far they've come over the years.

I like your videos a lot. I can relate to your questions because something similar happened to me. I got to Mamamoo backwards: from the latest hits to the oldest songs and many things I didn't understand at the beginning. These two bops were relesed prior to debut. RBW knew Mamamoo's concept was a bold move and a risky project due to the maturity and well-positioned success of 2nd Gen girl groups. Therefore, they considered it would be a good idea to get the endorsement of renowned artists with distinctive sounds (which later would be one of the defining aspects of 3rd Gen). This created a positive association and their concept was welcomed as a gush of fresh air in an industry that had been dominated by rigid concepts and music formulas. I heard in other of your videos you're falling for Wheein. She's my ultimate bias. Make a reaction vid for their solo song Easy feat Sik K, please. Cheers on your good work!

About Moonbyul rapping in a "girly" tone: she wasn't a rapper, she didn't trained or prepared for that before MMM. All the celebrity cameos were in support of their CEO Kim Do-hoon, who was already a well regarded producer before co-founding RBW. It's true, Moonbyul didn't get much shine in the beginning. Also I'm pretty sure they also pitched her voice up a bit for that rap. It's a little sad to look at now, but also makes me proud to be reminded just how far she's come since those days.

That's what I realised when I was listening to Mamamoo's older songs -- Moonbyul tended to rap in a higher pitch (somewhat forcibly? It sounded really contrived) and I think it's either she or the company that wanted her to fit in the mold of a girly girl who raps. I don't know when that changed but I'm so glad Moonbyul is comfortable in her own skin now and embracing that lovely low tone she has

LOVE your MMM reviews. If you like jazzy you should listen to Heize. Jenga is a good song to start with.
