Tikur Sew actually translates to "Black person" or "Black man" but for this song, Teddy talks about King (Negus) Minilik in the first verse, then talks about how his wife Queen Taytu was also leading troops in the last verse. So Tikur Sew refers to both of them in this song. If we want to be specific, Black Man would be "Tikur Wend/Sew" while it's "Tikur Set" for Black Woman. This song refers to the Battle of Adwa which was the first Italo-Ethiopian War. The Ethiopian forces defeated the Italian invading force on Sunday 1 March 1896, near the town of Adwa. It’s called Adwa Del (Adwa Victory). Adwa became a pre-eminent symbol of pan-Africanism and secured Ethiopian sovereignty until the Second Italo-Ethiopian War forty years later (Italy was embarrassed by the defeat of their ancestors by Africans, which they saw as inferior), Where Italy occupied Ethiopia for 5 years before they were defeated again.

It was the Ethio-Italian war of 1896 when Ethiopians led by King Minilik II of Ethiopian at Adwa war front in Northern state of Ethiopia called Tigray and defeated over 28, 000 Italians the first black peoples victory over Europeans which was repeated in 1941 second invasion of Italians and that victory was repeated by king Hailesillasie of Ethiopia. By the way Ethiopians defeated the Turkish general led Egyptians army twice at Dogsli on the coast of the Red Sea. Ethiopia also defeated the Portuguese intruders in the 17 th century. Somalians were the last weak invaders defeated by president Megidtu of Ethiopia in 1978. Do you know that Ethiopians also ruled yemen in the 4 th century under king Caleb of Ethiopia? In this war, all men and women of the country stood up from all directions and all parts of the country to defend the dignity of their own country, with only traditional weapons.
