Entertaining yet scary for the novice collector thinking of purchasing ancient coins. Do you think that buying ancient coins from sellers at coin shows is relatively safe? Yeah, please show us some more videos like this to help keep things into perspective. Good job.
@historyathome8 ай бұрын
I have little experience with coin shows but I would guess and hope that the sellers are vetted to make sure they aren't grifters.

Just basing off of other collector's goods shows, it's a coinflip (lol) whether you're getting legit stuff. None of this stuff is really regulated too well, beyond your usual fraud charges or whatever, and good luck getting that applied when it's like a $20 coin.

Hey there! This is Ryan from Ryan's Coins. Stumbled upon this video, was a bit surprised to see some of my listings! I have been at this for about a year, this video came out pretty early into that year. I have continued to adjust and change my listing process to improve and be more transparent. His note about thinking the listing was for 4 coins is valid, and I try not to make that mistake anymore. I do try to focus on providing "solid" coins at good prices, so while some of my items are certainly not the highest grade, I don't think anyone would think they are overpriced. And god forbid I accidentally ever sell a fake! But I think I am 100% on that front so far. Love the video!

This was such an educational joy to watch. Thank you for this fun lesson. I've purchased a Widow's Mite in the past for a rosary that I had made for my mother. It was kind of interesting it was from a old gent on Etsy looking to get rid of his collection. Sold it pretty cheap(it was confirmed authentic). Really nice guy. As an aside, in the mineral collection circles there are also a massive fake market of what used to be common minerals. It's sad that so many wonderful things are being cheaped just for a buck. And I say that as a poor person. Anywho, I'll shut up. Take care coin dude!

The only slabbed ancients to buy are NGC Ancients. But use their website to fingerprint the coin in the slab for sale as the slabs are also copied with a junk coin inserted. Also ebay is a good source for NGC slabbed ancient coins. Yes, most sellers hike up the prices to cover the fees, but most will come down a lot in price.... I have even haggled slabbed coins to way below auction market value. Just don't be afraid to ask :)

I love replica coins myself, as long as they're being sold as such and they're priced accordingly (this is, under $2 from the Sellers I buy them from). They are a great addition to any modest coin collection when money is a concern and a cheap tool to introduce children to this world and teach them a bit of history to boot.

Sir, not only does Ebay have fakes, they don't do anything to remove them. Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It just 100% supports what I was seeing with my own eyes. I'm in IT, and was an art major, and just looking at the artwork on some of the fakes is hilarious, and times are tough, so expect to see knock offs of all kinds of coins and conditions. 20 bucks adds up fast when you multiply by 50. I saw this sellers coins, and I thought...WOW, I didn't know they were into anime so long ago! The emperor of Rome looks like Dragon Ball Z or Pokémon. He has all the coins up for bid, and he has some really good looking fakes too. They all have bids, they are all 20+ and they are all fake. The sad thing is when you read the negative comments, the last 3 from this month say...This is a fake gold coin, it's copper. He is located in the UK. The "good" fakes are well sought after coins, not in great condition, but worth the money (if real) because of how rare. Like the medusa coins I see so often. All collectors would like to have one in the collection, even if it's not perfect, but still very clean, for 20-30 bucks. They sell for 1k+ depending on condition. Anyway, THANK YOU. For everything, the cleaning videos, and this one. It was perfect timing.

Most of the coins here are clearly listed as a reproduction ('commemorative silver plated'), which was reflected in their price of only 10-15 dollars. I don't think that's either a scam, or a 'fake'. If you don't get that it's a modern reproduction, that's your own fault. And the one that had REPRO in the title in all caps? You're calling that tiny writing?
