Love love love how you concentrate on the video🤗 no distracting cutaways or interruptions, just attention and facial communication… Nicely Done 🥰 and Thank You👍🥰. Many Years ago, when I was a kid, I was allowed to play old ( REALLY old) records on Granny’s record player from maybe the 1920s… ( the kind made with wood, a lift-up lid, a large trumpet type horn for a speaker and two little doors on the front) and this song was on one of her records…SO, I guess that it is indeed a VERY old song. Thank you again✨ looking forward to more reactions 🤗

Great reaction, Samantha! I did watch your face all the way through. I could see how caught up you were in the story and saddened at the ending. As far as I know, it is not based on a real individual, but the events probably happened many times. Mining is so very hard, life threatening every day. I think you should react to his cover of Shenandoah next. You may not have heard it before either, it is an old American folk song. It is beautiful and he said he was happy with it because his wife liked it.

Jimmy Dean wrote this about fellow actor John Mentoe ("Destry Rides Again"), who was 6' 5" tall. According to Dean's roommate (at the time), the song was intended to be a joke.

Hi Samantha. The original artist, Jimmy Dean, was a household name in the 60s and 70s, largely on the strength of this song, which he wrote, composed, and released in September 1961, and which had gone to number 1 on Bilboard's Hot 100 by November. Jimmy Dean was already a well-known Country artist, but this song made him a true genre-spanning celebrity. A celebrity status he later traded on by opening a line of breakfast sausage and other foods, which you can find in stores and online today. Younger generations who sadly have forgotten his music, now only know his name through these food items. Jimmy Dean Premium Pork Hot Sausage Roll, in the 16 oz tube, from which we slice and fry spicy-version sausage patties, is a staple on our breakfast table (no beans and toast around here, luv, sorry to say -- lol).

Love this Jimmy Dean song. After Geoff did Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" took us a year of begging him to do this one.

There were a number of ballads in the US that came out between the beginning of the 1900's and about 1970 that share this mythology of legendary working men - always bigger than life, often with a dark past and frequently dying a hero. I think of them as the male equivalent of the stories of the prostitute with a heart of gold. This song was huge, on every channel when it came out, and stayed on every rural jukebox well into the late 70's. I was 10 when Jimmy Dean released it; it was on the radio constantly and I was obsessed. As always, Geoff worked his magic, took the original song and made it more musically and rhythmically complex than the original - I love it (I became bored with the original decades ago.)

That was a bad time period, it seemed like a new mining disaster happened every other week and it's easy to see why a song like this took off the way it did back then. The lyrics paint a vivid picture which can't help but draw the listener into the song.

Big Bad John was originally by Jimmy Dean. Yes, the same Jimmy Dean as the name of sausage.

At the time Geoff wanted to film this, he was unable to get any location that he tried. Layne (VoicePlay’s beatboxer and coowner of Pattycake Studios) suggested that they had a separate storage area that Geoff might use. After a morning of moving things around, Geoff managed a setting he was happy with. He and his wife did all the lighting and filming for this one.

It's a really old song from the 50s or very early 60s. I remember it from when I was a very young boy and I'm 66.

Hi Samantha, great reaction. Actually, we know how Geoff Castellucci sings and how he makes his videos. And yet I look forward to each new one and find them wonderfully made for the respective song. That too is an art. Have a great week and Greetings from Germany

Incredible performance by him. I had never heard this song before I heard his version a few months ago. As for how true this story is, I don't know. But most folk legends are based at least loosely on real people and/or events.

This song is meant to raise attention to the story itself, not the 'talents' of those singing the song. In the original, by Jimmy Dean, the story is very well brought forward with the baseline used in the background as to speak of this big, lumbering man, as it should be. Your ears are not drawn towards individual singers as they belt out or emphasize their notes. The story is forefront, where it should be. It's too bad that these days things have changed to the point to where important things are... rearranged. Love Jimmy Dean's version best.

Big hit in late 1960’s we’ll revived and reacted to. Fun fact they did a parody called big bad Bruce and a fire in a hairdressing salon

I love this song. The original artist, Jimmy Dean, has a sequel to this song on the same album called Cajun Queen. Although Geoff hasn't done a cover of that one yet you might want to check it out

I really enjoyed Road Trip with you this morning. Back when I was 10 my dad had an album by Jimmy Dean (of sausage fame) and this was on it (he made it famous) and I'm surprised I didn't wear a groove into the vinyl. I'm sure your face with Geoff's wasn't a lot different from mine. It is quite the tale. Mining was a hard and dangerous job that killed a lot of men and those it didn't were really lucky if they didn't come down with black lung and die early.

As folks have said, the original was by Jimmy Dean. It was just something the producers threw together because Dean was recording an album (meaning a 12" disc containing 5 or 6 songs on each side) and they were one song short. It then became a single (the censors forced one change in the lyrics), and eventually one of his biggest hits and his signature song. No, there's no reason why you should have to be acquainted with the song. It's from 60 years ago. And you don't live in the English-speaking world.

I can't even remember the first time I heard this Jimmy Dean song but I don't think I was very old. I like this cover but I think I like the original better. To be honest, while listening to Geoff, I was concentrating more on trying to see how low he could go than on the lyrics but when Jimmy Dean did it, I really listened to the lyrics. Either way, it's a great song.

Just in order to understand... What, exactly, was "much better" in the original song, and according to what criteria? 🙂 You know, all you said is that ACCORDING TO YOUR PERSONAL TASTE you found the ogival "much better", but that doesn't give away ANY information. I listened to the original, several times and in several versions, but my criteria are mine and yours are yours. I'd love to understand your statement better. 🙂

i have listened to the original and found it actually quite...bland and boring for my taste to be honest. i like this version better. but that's the beauty of music, we all find something we like because all our tastes are different. just because i personally find the original bland and boring, doesn't mean it's a bad song or a bad performance. it's just not my personal taste. and the beauty of people reinventing oldies like this, is that people will go search for the original (which they perhaps may never have heard of otherwise) and bring those old gems back to life.

@@flashdonat The fact that you like it or not is not what I asked. 🙂 I want to understand WHAT, SPECIFICALLY, you didn't like and why. THAT would bring me some new informations and understanding. Just stating it does or doesn't meet your taste is useless to me. 🙂 So let me ask it again: WHAT, SPECIFICALLY, didn't you like in this version? Is it something about musicality, is it because it differs from the original (duh!), is it because it's not the original (again, duh!), or WHAT, EXACTLY? And WHY, SPECIFICALLY, didn't you like those things? 🙂 Thank you for any REAL information you'll give us, I'll appreciate.
