The reason why Dancing Queen wasn't released at the time was because of the Duffy version. Both companies both the rights to the song and Duffy's version was released first. SNSD's future was so uncertain at that point. They were right off the heels of the Black Ocean, the biggest single bullying event in Kpop history. They were very close to disbanding, Gee was probably their last shot. If they had released Dancing Queen at that time, they would've almost definitely have been accused of stealing and at that point, it would very likely have been the end of the group.

In 2008, they released "Gee" instead (same retro-cute vibe, featuring the same designer's slacks, so it is a very subtle CV via product placement) and we know how _that_ worked out.

I don't think there was ever really a risk of them disbanding. They always had a sizable fandom, they won music shows, were popular on variety shows and sold well with all their 2007-2008 releases. The black ocean was a very upsetting thing for them obviously, but no way SM would let them just give up because of it. I agree about the reason for not releasing Dancing Queen though, since everyone already knew 'Mercy', the hate would have been insane.

Dancing Queen is not actually a Korean version of Duffy's "Mercy", it's just that SM bought the same demo as Mercy at around 2008, it happened also with Kesha's "Run Devil Run" in 2010 (but eventually she decided not to release it) and Demi Lovato's "Mistake" in 2011 being the same demo as Girls' Generation b-side "Born to be a lady"

It's their official english name it's not like some bootleg translation. Personally if I'm talking about them irl I usually go with 'Soshi' but whatever you're comfortable with, use that. No need for any gatekeeping over which official name you use!

Also fun fact! if you don't already know Sooyoung once debuted in a japanese group that's why she is very fluent in japanese therefore when they had concerts in japan she is the assigned speaker and translator of the group!!

You know, I COMPLETELY forgot this existed until I rediscovered it earlier this week but you should absolutely react to the english version of Tiffany's I Just Wanna Dance. She only ever performed it once at a fanmeet BUT she did at one point upload the rehearsal onto her IG. Not the BEST audio considering it was recorded on her iphone rather than professional recording equipment but it's a live acoustic version of the song and her vocals are gorgeous, well worth checking out imo.

I believe both Duffy and SMent took the song from the producer. But since Duffy's Mercy became big in the US. SM couldn't release Dancing queen that is supposed to be SNSD's comeback. So they need to make a new track for comeback. And in the end and thankfully it happened, the Iconic Gee was born. that's why the outfits and theme of the MVs of dancing queen and gee were a bit similar. I think the copyright issues took years for SMent to get the Dancing queen be released. That's all i know. To my fellow sones who knew, correct me if im wrong about it. Thank u! #gg4eva

People said that both Duffy and SMent bought the demo from the producer, so I did some research. It was said that "Mercy" was co-written by Duffy and Steve Booker, and was produced by Steve. Wiki even said that Duffy have already written the lyrics even before meeting Steve, and the song "Mercy" was made because Duffy has this gut feeling that she should write together with that producer. Basically, only the two of them made the whole song and it was also Duffy's 2nd single. So I really don't know how SMent got this song 😂

I suggest you react to more of their concert performances like their performance of Genie in Madison's Square Garden. Their concert performances are on a different level! They are very free when they move during concerts compared to their performances for music shows, that's why if you want to see show stopping performances, you should definitely watch the concert version. Interesting Trivia: I believe on the original Japanese recordings of All My Love is For You and Time Machine it was only the "Vocal Line" (Tae, Tiffany, Jessica, Sunny & Seohyun) who sang on the recordings. In the "live" version other members are given lines, so they are unique recordings. Interestingly enough, both MV's were shot on the same long Leap Year weekend in Japan at the end of February 2012. Taeyeon had just torn off a toe nail tripping over a monitor while being an MC at an awards show, so unlike the other members, she doesn't dance in either MV and is mainly seen sitting except for when she's leaning against a wall on Time Machine. They even hide her injured foot. Both songs and MV's are gorgeous and worth checking out.

SM decided to hold "Dancing Queen" because "Mercy" really had big success back then. Some photo teaser leaked, but it look very similar to "Gee" style so people think it was just another photo set for "Gee". But amazingly, they were very good at keeping it secret, and decided to release it in end of 2012 as a pre-release track for "I Got A Boy". Some kind of easter eggs. SONEs were very shocked back then. Shocked but happy. ❤️❤️ At that moment, SM decided to release "Gee" instead, luckily it was a right move. This is when SNSD jump high into their legendary state. Yes, you right. This AMLFY live performance is 1000x more beautiful than the MV version, but the MV and the original song is beautiful too. It can warm your heart when you watch it. P.S: SM remake the white-tee-and-jeans style in "Dancing Queen" in "Gee" Japanase version MV.

I love that Gee was chosen as a title track last minute bc of the whole Duffy/duo rights issue (back then it was very common to sell the rights to both western and eastern artists as the industries didn't cross as much), but it was Gee that propelled then to stardom.. It went so viral that i rmbr watching the MV with absolute no knowledge of what kpop even was (and i wouldn't know till yrs later w gangnam style), keep in mind that i'm from a small brazilian city and these cute dancing girls still reached me lmao
