The older gent at the beginning was Louis Marshall Jones, known by the stage name "Grandpa Jones." He was a banjo player and singer/songwriter, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1978. He was a featured regular on a TV show that ran for years called "Hee-Haw", which was a staple of American Saturday night entertainment. Roy Clark and Buck Owens were the show's hosts, and they invited some of the greats in Country music and other forms of entertainment. It was a silly yet wholesome bit of Americana that we could use more of today.

I'm 68. You are the lucky one! I admired Glen, even though I was and still am a huge Beatles Fan...I went for melody and harmony [two good lookin' sisters lol].Glen's life story is amazing...he came from humble beginnings to rise above to musical excellence and his voice, wow! what a singer! I still sing some of his songs in senior homes. I was a music teacher in part because of people like Glen inspiring quality and excellence...I took it as far as I could take it. Young people are discovering him on youtube and most are floored by both his musicianship and his voice. These metal head guys often admire his guitar skills technically using the "Shred" factor," but don't get what Glen was all about as an entertainer and singer in all genres. For God sakes he was a member of the Wrecking Crew, played and sing back up many records before fame...Sinatra, The Beach Boys, you name it. They watch a clip and don't even know he hosted his own Variety show, participated in comedy sketches, was in a few movies [True Grit original flick is a classic]. He went through terrible struggles with drugs and came out on top. He played the guitar so melodically, musically, not just a technical show off. I've have seen interviews about playing golf with Allice Cooper regularly 😂, who would have thunk that?

That man at the beginning they always called Grandpa and a show called Hee Haw. Roy Clark was very well know for his guitar playing. The Song was written in Stan Jones in the 1940s. It's never changed. It's always played as they just did. A group called The Outlaws recorded it with the lyrics first I believe. It's so great. ❤❤😊😊👋👋

You should listen Glen doing The William Tell Overture.

Country shred. Glen Campbell ripping through scales on a 12 string will never stop being amazing. Roy clark is simply a national treasure. A world class instrumentalist that could play anything with strings, other than a harp. Timeless stuff.

I grew up listening to these two. I was never a big fan of Roy Clark until I was literally dragged to one of his concerts. OMG! He could and did play all stringed instruments. He was Amazing!

Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins, who taught Jerry some of his amazing techniques. Here's one I always recommend but probably won't be reacted to. Mark Kroos playing Dueling Banjos, it is worth a listen even if you never do a video on it. Another is Hayseed Dixie doing War Pigs.

I definitely want to check out Mark

@@DaveWildheart you are the first one to say that. Thanks and you should try the other group. One of the members father wrote Dueling Banjos.

Glenn and that 12 string Ovation, anytime he busts that out for a performance, you know to hold on to your hat, shit's about to get real: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJu3emeMh71mb7ssi=5oo2IFfuhS0geHqy This live William Tell he did with an orchestra, and he started tremolo picking with it behind his head and it is super clean...made me want to just turn my guitar into a coffee table.

OK, you’ve got a lot of very knowledgeable viewers here, but I’m just gonna say A couple of things: These two are terrific and always fun, great musicians Go ahead, watch Stevie Ray Vaughan at El Mocambo Live playing “Texas flood“! Let’s see what you think. (again, all great guitarists, Different genres). this would be fun!

Thanks for making this show up in my feed. Roy Clark is "was" a master with anything with strings no joke., and good with keys. I got to see him perform free at a county fair back in the late 90's. He gets forgotten in "best of" conversations. ANd Glenn. Well surprise surprise

That's "Grandpaw", one of the recurring characters on the show "Hee-Haw", which was just as goofy and rednecky as it sounds, but it brought us some amazing music.

Louis Marshall Jones, known professionally as Grandpa Jones, was a singer, songwriter, and banjo player whose career spanned from 1932 until his death in 1998 at the age of 84. He suffered 2 strokes after performing at the Grand Old Opry and died the next day.

The first time I heard this song it was 1949 and I was 9 years old. It was sung by Vaughn Monroe with his big band. Next time I heard it, it was sung by Frankie Laine. Many artists back in the 1950's, including Bing Crosby covered this song. The lyrics tell quite a story that you should check out.

From what I understand, neither of these men read music. At any rate, they both have to rank pretty high on anybody's list of top guitarists and entertainers.

Musicality is internal, notation is external… it’s a creative boon to NOT rely on printed music, as once you rely on it, you’re using your eyes more than your ears, and less likely to play with the form 🤷🏼♀️🙂

@katiee263 I can read music (not as well as I used to, due to lack of practice). I always envied people that could play by ear. These men were legends and would have been whether they could or couldn't read music. I have a friend that is a pianist and can read music but, rarely does because, he usually plays by ear.

I saw Roy Clark perform at the New York State Fair I believe in the early to mid 2000s he was so amazing even better than I thought he was. I used to sit and watch him on Hee Haw with my uncles when I was a little boy. The crowd loved him

Both of these men were so talented. My mother has a Gibson Arch Top from the 1930s. Grampa told her she would only get it when she could play Under The Double Eagle like a pro. She said at 14 she came home from school every day and practiced until Grampa handed her the guitar. Now it's up for grabs again with myself and my sibs, same rules as Grampa had. I think my youngest sister is going to take it! I play piano myself so I have practiced the song with her a lot.
