I’ve never see such a healthy and non problematic portrayal of bisexuality. There’s honestly no words to put exactly how important a character like Nick Nelson is to so many young bisexual kids. I wish I had Nick Nelson when I was struggling. Nick is unapologetically bisexual 💖💜💙

I'm 55 and I love this series. I was really surprised that a series written for young adults touched me so deeply, but it has. I love that there's no sex to distract us. As much as it is about discovering who you are and becoming okay with that, it's also, truly, about falling in LOVE. "In a romantic way, not just a friend way!" And most anyone of any age can identify with that! The writing is superb, the whole production is beautiful, and the acting is amazing. Kit deserves an Emmy and/or BAFTA TV award. Still re-watching this masterpiece regularly. ❤️

In your age range and same. I also think that with so many older adults watching this program that it shows that many of us really want to watch programming where the world isn’t so dark and graphic and does’t focus drugs and sex. There’s wholesomeness. I love the wholesomeness. Like some teens who are not out, I engaged in some risky behaviors with the opposite sex because I thought I was bi-bisexual but NOT biromantic (took a while to figure that out)-and I wanted to see what the fuss was about when it came to sex (the heterosexual fuss of my peers because I just didn’t get the romantic feelings for boys), and there was no way I could approach a girl back then. Also, I experimented with drug use as a way to escape how out of place I felt among my peers with all the same sex attraction I was experiencing that could never be realised. I could just get high and hang out with all of my straight friends and be left alone. (Female friends relayed that most guys were scared of my intellect. Good! Saved me some grief at least.) I think had I not been so confused about my sexuality, if I’d had some place to talk about it, I’d never had had sex with a boy, and if a certain event never occurred, I probably wouldn’t have ended up with the drug crowd. Which came about when my best friend whom I was attracted to ran away in the middle of the night and came to my house; I waited until morning and told my Mom who called her Mom, but her mother blamed me and she was never allowed to see me any more. (Her mother had been in the military and I wonder if she suspected a possible budding romance.) Adrift, I fell in the the kids who at least weren’t so constrained by their parents. I’d always had freedom with mine but hung around with the wholesome, nerdy kids in my advanced classes until that happened and actually forced distance between my friendship group and me because it was difficult/painful for me to be around her knowing we couldn’t be friends. I mean, she took her mother seriously and wouldn’t be friends with me in school; she completely cooled our once close friendship. Like Nick, I was so confused and so hurt like he was thinking that Charlie was removing him from his life.

@@olly-kai - well, I'm 72 and can totally relate to what you're saying here. So, can I join the 'Heartstopper' oldies fan club please (subscription to follow)? 😊 There was one reference to sex near the end of the show when Nick said the following, 'wasn't it obvious the first ten times that we made out?' Isn't that what that expression means? Regarding BAFTA's etc,. I wouldn't be surprised also if Joe Locke was nominated for some sort of 'newcomer' acting award.

@@khalos5281 most of the negative reviews I've seen have been from grumpy people complaining how because it has two white boy leads and therefore the main plot only deals with white, queer problems. I think that is kind of a valid argument, however I do not believe that it is therefore bad representation and therefore should disown it simply because it *could be more* diverse. That doesn't make much sense to me. Progress isn't perfect, and representation of any kind always matters.

what i also really loved about heartstopper was how good the communication between nick and charlie was? charlie attempts to shut himself out multiple times because he overthinks and is very anxious about being a burden (mood) and it just really cheered me up and made me feel so good that nick would always be so honest and reassuring with him that there were no big misunderstandings. seeing such healthy communication and how they supported each other unconditionally throughout the show was sooo sooo nice it made me feel all warm and wistful

"The whole show I kept on thinking something bad is gonna happen and he's gonna be crushed-" I love how literally every single person has that reaction when watching the show (bcs we've all been conditioned by the unnecessarily dramatic, angsty, dragged out shows that are the trend nowadays for some reason) and it just never happens. As a person who doesn't enjoy too much angst and drama, this show feels like it was made for me. Also, every single person keeps on expecting something bad to happen and Nick golden retriever Nelson always proves them wrong. I just love him so much somebody please let me talk about Nick Nelson for at least 3 hours.

@@ConnorFranta Alice Oseman calls them Heartstopper Moments. It’s like you said in your video, it’s that incredible, excited, electrical feeling you have when you and your crush first touch, or the first time you kiss someone you really like. I think the actors do a good job of portraying that with their expressions, but the animations just send it over the top.

For anyone who wants to hear some positivity, when I came out in high school I faced no negative response. None. I came out in Year 13 (last year of high school, 2018 for me) in an English speech assignment to my class because it was relevant to the topic at hand, and I felt ready. I was terrified though. I kept it subtle, but anyone paying attention would know. I basically said I was scared of coming out in my speech and didn't expand much further. There was meant to be a Q&A section after my speech as part of the assignment but my longtime friend I'd known since kindergarten came up and hugged me and said a few lovely things before sitting back down. Other people in the class shouted out support. No one in the class said a single bad thing or so much as looked at me wrong. It was either positive responses of support, or silence of people keeping to themselves. My teacher didn't say anything but that day at lunch I received an email from her. "At the time I missed the potential subtext of your line "fear of coming out" when talking about the attachment and abandonment category of fear. Please know that you are definitely accepted - whatever your sexuality, whether you're out (or not). Especially in my classroom, you will not be shamed, and you are accepted. It may be un-human to be fearless, but you proved today that you are courageous." I'll admit to crying. She was the first adult I came out to, technically, and that support helped more than I can put into words. I always felt safe in her class. One of my classmates asked if I was out to my parents and people outside of school, and when I said no, they promised they wouldn't say anything about it to anyone then. I was shocked. I lived in a small town and there were no secrets, I was expecting it to get back to my parents and do the job of coming out for me. But it never did go outside my school, perhaps not even outside my class. People seemed to decide it wasn't for them to share, and kept it to themselves. I didn't experience a single negative interaction because of it. Not one. For the rest of my 6 or so months at high school nothing happened. I really did get to live the best case scenario but I'd like to share that it's possible. The world's changing. Sometimes the ideal scenario is real. and yes, I loved heartstopper :) take care xx

it’s crazy how much stuff changes, because i came out as a freshman in 2013 in a very progressive/“liberal” area and didn’t have a shit ton of overt backlash or like a hate crime, but throughout high school had a lotttt of mistreatment, microaggressions, bullying, etc thrown at me. i was the only out queer person at the school as a 15 year old (it was a time when it was “okay” to be queer but it was understood that no one “officially” came out till after graduation). some bullying wasn’t explicitly homophobic, but mostly it came from a place of me being an “other” that was okay to bully and it was social suicide to publicly defend me, all which came from me being queer. plus i had to be the sole confidant for all the closeted kids and the dictionary on queerness for anyone else. any time anything remotely gay came up i was the sounding board on it and it was a lot of pressure and eyes on me, something that i recognize now made my anxiety permanently skyrocket. i was expected to personally take on all homophobes at the school, even if they were far older than me or i didn’t even know them, and if i didn’t it was seen as me okaying or accepting the homophobia even if it wasn’t related to me whatsoever. idk it’s so weird because while i was experiencing it i was basically conditioned to think i had a “good” coming out / queer teen experience because i wasn’t being straight up hate crimed or slurs being thrown at me, but there was plenty of shit from teens and adults alike that only upon later examination did i reconcile with myself how deeply fucked up some shit i had to experience was. i’m so happy for you and heartstopper makes me so so happy. but for me it comes with a bittersweet feeling of never being able to experience true queer love as a teen because so much pressure and so many eyes were on me at all times. i get sad about it because i feel like i’m having a lot of “teen” love moments in my mid-20s (or haven’t had some yet) that i wish younger me was able to experience as a teen, free of expectation. this was a rant a bit sorry

I have never seen any piece of lgbtq media that so perfectly captures what that feeling is like. Every little detail from the awkward hi's, the nerve wracking instagram dms, the am I gay quizzes, everything about nick nelson especially was so spot on and it felt like watching my own life. I've never really related to a high school set movie or show before and while I wish I had this when I was in high school, the fact that I have it at all is a blessing.

I've been putting off seeing Heartstopper, because all my friends said it made them laugh, cry and be happy at the same time. Yeah, when I finally saw it (twice in one day!) it did those things to me and hit me in the gut several times. It brought me back to my teens years in the '70s and it also brought home to me the wasted decades of such societal acceptance that we have now, although there is plenty more to do. Oh, and a very good reaction video by the way. :)

Coming from someone who realized their attraction to guys at a young age and has always been aware of it, hearing charlie say the same thing hit me so viscerally and I realized then and there that he’s one of the only examples I’ve encountered of a queer guy like that in media. I had my first crush on a boy when I was 6 (I’m 23 currently). I had a crush on him for like 5 yrs, I was down BAD. I just sort of accepted it and never really became a point of panic for me. I was really young so it just kinda became part of my life (tho there was a point in middle school where I thought I liked girls too, the irony lol). I never really felt like I needed to come out cause I had so many queer friends growing up that I never had to hide it in the first place. I never had to perform heterosexuality because I never thought I was/had to be straight at all. So seeing charlie (a character who has always been aware of their sexuality and has never been ashamed of it) and nick (a character who recognized their sexuality because of another guy) expressing their queerness in ways so similar to mine while watching them being portrayed as loving and caring friends and then later, boyfriends, and being surrounded by a group of supportive queer friends absolutely made me feel so seen and validated in ways I’d never even thought about. I love them both so much.

I completely agree with all of your takes. I was so relieved that any conflict that came up in the show was almost immediately resolved. I have never smiled so much at a show, it even made me smile for days after, just remembering it. Us queers needed this. Not every show needs to be about the dark depressing side of being gay. We can also have the cute, everyday, normal life representation of developing crushes, going on first dates, etc. I love this show and anytime I need to feel super good, I'll watch it again. The cast and crew did an amazing job❣

i've watched it 3 times and bawled my eyes out every single time. as a bisexual i just feel so represented, seen and safe for like one of the first times in my life. i can't even begin to describe how much this show, the characters and the cast mean to me, like they just make me feel safe

Literally everything you said was so accurate to what I was thinking as I watched the show. How idealistic yet realistic it was. How it was overall very positive and so different from what we have grown to expect in media. This show melted my heart and made me feel whole. I hope young kids in the community get a chance to watch this show and feel proud of who they are. This is the kind of representation and storylines we need. Touching lightly are the hard storylines but focusing on how the world could be if we keep moving forward. Thank you for watching and sharing your opinoins on this!

I am 54 and I have now watched Heartstopper 10 times. It is the therapy I never knew I needed. Mine is the generation that AIDS took and I think those of us who survived have more PTSD than we'd ever admitted and this show has given us so much to cry over and to mourn.

I watched Heartstopper with my mom to kick off pride month after my sister recommended it to me, and we both loved it so much!!! It was extremely wholesome and made me so happy as a bisexual. I actually feel like good bi representation in media is even rarer than gay representation (from what I've seen), and Nick's character arc was so satisfying. This is truly an important show ❤️

Heartstopper is for people of all ages I’m 44 and loved it, I wish I had something like this when I was younger growing up. Letting me know that everything I was feeling was ok, the world is such a different place now and has come a long way in the last 20/30 years.

the show is just so pure! the heartwarming vibe that just gives you feel good. the series really makes you root for the characters to get their happy endings. I love how they gave the book the justice it deserves. I’ve rewatch it multiple times and persuaded my friends, straight or not, to watch it and seeing them loving it just feels my heart with joy. 😊💛🍂💯

And the music choice is so good as well! Plus the animation, plus the writing, together made it such a euphoric experience! (Now saying the word euphoric out loud made me realize that literally nothing about Euphoria is euphoric?) we need more shows like heartstopper showing us how love should be like!!

Connor! I'm so happy you reacted and loved this show!!! The graphic novels are everything and the show absolutely did them justice! Oh boy though, we've got a storm coming for season 2. I really liked your view on Ben Hope. That's not something we really got in the novels because he sort of just...doesn't show up anymore. But in the show he's more present and Bash did an incredible job of making me hate him, but also see where his actions are coming from with the projecting and the fear and self-loathing. I'm excited to see what else they do with his character in the show.

The graphic novel that she wrote goes beyond what the show displays and 100% still hits you in the feels. This show was cast so well to match the novel and it’s beautiful to watch this project unfold for today’s youth to enjoy.

Kit is more Nick Nelson than his graphic novel version and I just don’t understand how that’s possible. And Joe is sarcastic in real life to an extent that Charlie is in the books (the Nick&Charlie novella really reveals that sarcastic tone well). I don’t know how much Alice had an input on who was cast for her characters, but, as a comic lover, I approve of the cast because they’re so accurate.
