The new creatures are angels from the aether, they try to bring herobrine(their leader) back and found out that steve is the good version of herobrine(he is herobrine, its like a mirror) and still has herobrine in himself. They dont want to kill steve they just want to bring steves evil version back. First at the aether portal the angel thought he has herobrine in front of him. Just remember animation live, when steve died, herobrine died too
