My family’s one requirement for 4th of July is this movie. They made my sister and I watch it every year even when we were probably too young to watch it (my mom made me cover my eyes for the strip club scene every single time, and I was generally terrified whenever an alien was on screen) and my family will randomly quote this movie year round. I love this movie though and I also love the Pitch Meeting for it (it’s one of my favorite Pitch Meetings Ryan George has done).

I remember a Saturday Night Live sketch shortly after this movie came out with that same actor who played the president running for reelection, and somehow losing to another candidate in a debate about the events depicted in the movie. It was so funny because as you said, he should be a shoe-in after these events and his speech!

He did delay evacuating the cities. He sent hundreds of American pilots to their death in a futile attack. He didn’t use the information technology at Area 51. (What did he REALLY know, and when did he know it?) And my peeve: He didn’t nuke the bastards once the shield were down, but instead expended vast quantities of ordnance uselessly and ending up being saved by one old drunk on a kamikaze mission. Come to think of it. I might have voted for the other guy too!

FUN FACT: Will Smith’s line, “AND WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMELL?!”, was not scripted. That scene took place near a lake filled with Brine Shrimp. When they die, they sink to the bottom of the shallow lake and decompose. When the wind kicks just right, it wafts the horrifying smell of millions of decayed shrimp; and apparently, nobody warned Will Smith.

I always liked the small detail where Russel accidentally hit the missile launch button before takeoff, which caused the malfunction and subsequent jam when he tried to actually fire it.

Yeah, I love the little attention to detail moments like that. It would have made the jam feel extremely contrived without it. But that little scene makes it entirely reasonable and realistic, not just a plot contrivance. They actually didn't even originally have him in a fighter jet, but his own crop duster. But test audiences thought it was ridiculous that he could keep up with the jets, so they rewrote and reshot all of those scenes just to make it feel believable.

A lot of missable details this movie has. The most important one imo being Russel’s kamikaze attack on the alien destroyer. The reason his suicide attack was so effective was because he hit the alien weapon the exact second it fired. Pretty much the old plugging a shotgun when it fires joke. Man died a clown with balls of steel.

There was a deleted scene that I wish they would've left in the movie. It showed David studying the ship and discovering that some of our tech was reversed engineered from the alien tech and that is why he was able to make a virus that was compatible with their programming.

The funniest scene in this movie to me is when they're looking for pilots. He's telling them that he's looking for payback since he was kidnapped by aliens 10 years ago, and they're looking at each other like oh hell this nut case. They're in the middle of an alien invasion and still don't believe him. LOL!

Not only are they in the middle of an alien invasion; the main guy looking for pilots is the guy in charge of Area 51; i.e. the guy who literally knows that they were scouting & visiting Earth as far back as 1947. lol. I guess he just assumed that the crashed ship was the only one. It's worth noting in the novelization & prequel/sequel books, it was confirmed that Russel had, in fact, been abducted & probed & studied. When they went in & searched the wreckage of one of the big city ships, they found an area with a bunch of research on Earth, including belongings from the people they had abducted, and ties directly into / explains General Graves' comment about how "they knew exactly where to hit us" and how they immediately targeted NORAD.

Fun Fact: When they were making this movie, the Producers asked the United States military for help. Military assistance would save them millions in production costs. The US military read the script and loved it. The script was pro government, pro US and pro military so they were all on board to help get this move made, just under one condition. The military asked the writers to... CUT OUT ANY REFERENCES TO AREA 51. The Producers and writers refused to cut Area 51 references so the American military refused to help them with the movie.

In fact it was so bad, that it killed the ID4 film series forever.

oh, fun fact number 2. The Dads missle didn't launch because when he first entered into the jet he accidentally activated the missle launch. Then he pressed a button that aborted it from launching. The system was still reading the missle luanch as being aborted. when he pressed the trigger to launch the missle it tried to launch but without disactivating the abort order the systems failsafe went off, causing the clamps connection to the missle to be physically severed and stay in a hold position until manually released.

In great movies, even the funny parts are there for a reason, either to explain something that happened at the start of the movie or the end. I gaurentee 99% of people didn't even notice and chalked it up to poor writing, you know "Murpheys law" type writing lol.

Almost 30 years later, and the city destruction sequence easily remains the single greatest display of awe-inspiring destruction ever put to film. It's just the perfect demonstration of the villain's true power, and combined with he next sequence showing off their impenetrable defenses, it makes that first successful missile strike all the more exciting, like we've FINALLY got a chance to take on this seemingly unstoppable force.

Compare that to CGI from 1998: Lost In Space, the few CGI shots in Event Horizon (most was models), Star Wars Prequels... they look like PS2/3 graphics & don't hold up at all.

I saw the movie back in the theatre during my college years with a couple of friends. We thought the poster looked interesting but we didn't expect it to be THAT GOOD! Especially during the President's speech everyone in the audience was cheering. It was crazy. I still have goosebumps today. This was a very good movie. Worth every minute.

@@Tasuva opinions are subjective, but the fact that the Emmerich Godzilla's design was based on Jurassic Park was not. It's even written in the concept art, though I'll confess I forget which page exactly. It is objectively not a unique design. That doesn't mean you can't like it. I think we all like plenty of things that are heavily based on other things. Hell, I'd have probably liked the design myself if Roland Emmerich didn't slap it down like his dick on a table and try to tell me that it was supposed to be _Godzilla._

Independence day is a classic. I'm old enough to have seen in the the cinema when I was 15! But it still holds up today! Bill Pullman's speech is one of the greatest movie speeches I've ever heard! 👍 And Mr Emmerich, the director, saw the original Star wars a lot when he was a kid, so you can definitely see the influence in this. Just a pity there was an ad every 5 minutes, even one at the very end of the movie.

I don't even have enough fingers to count the amount of fellow service members who married a stripper from a club near the base only to have their bank accounts drained by her and fall into debt from buying an overpriced vehicle with a 30% interest rate. 7 out of 10 will usually be requesting a meeting with a Chaplin due to said economic drain and discovering Jody was keeping their girl company not to long after tying the knot. I went to a Tuesday night preview showing on July 2nd with a group of my friends. We had so much fun watching this movie. At one point, when David is telling everyone about giving the aliens a virus, my friend Eric shouts "GIVE THEM WINDOWS 95!" The entire theater just roared with laughter at that. Yes, that was Mae Whitman playing the president's daughter. Also, it's understandable to not recognize him with unkempt long hair, unshaven, and kind of pudgy, but Dr. Okun was Brent Spiner, who played Lieutenant Cmdr. Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The way they interspersed humor and affection in the movie totally balanced it out, because otherwise it's would be too grim too watch, I think. It was done really well. I love how Jeff Goldblum's "We must go faster" is the same line he has in Jurassic Park!

Fun reaction! I really hope you give Dante's Peak a chance someday. Stunning effects that still hold up, intense score, simple but effective story, and a lot more effort put into accurate science and phenomena than your typical disaster film (though some Hollywood BS is required for drama). It's been a longtime favorite of mine in the genre.

This movie was huge at the time. I don't think it gets enough credit nowadays, but it was awesome seeing it at the cinema in 1996. Obviously it has a Stargate vibe, as it's the same Producer / Director team. Some of the scenes are a bit dated now, but they were good at doing certain effects without too huge of a budget. But overall, it has held up very well. The CG effects in the battles still looks great, imo. It has just the right amount of humour to keep it fun. Just a perfect "popcorn" movie / summer blockbuster. Glad to see you all enjoyed it.

Oh, and when I bought my first AV receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS (around 1999), then bought my first DVD player and subwoofer, this movie was used a LOT as a test disk. lol Especially the first huge explosion of the skyscrapers, it sounds amazing on a big surround system with a decent subwoofer. It's also a movie with a very simple premise. You don't have to "think" too much when watching it. lol

I also really enjoyed the 1998 Godzilla movie (same Dean Devlin / Roland Emmerich team as ID4). For some reason, that movie gets slated by some people, but I'm not sure why. Probably because they are comparing to some of the original Japanese Godzilla classics. The 1998 movie was just another big (and slightly dumb) summer blockbuster with some great effects. I thought it was great.

You could look forward to the cinema with friends, and just switch your brain off for two hours. lol I remember seeing Sixth Sense at the cinema in 1999, after work. I only had a thin t-shirt on (because we normally wore a cleanroom bunny suit all day), and it was cold outside. The cinema still had the AC on though, so it was so even colder in there. We were shivering, and could see our own breath. But you know what, it added to the atmosphere of the movie, and we were just glad to switch off from work for a bit. Another great movie, too.

One of the greatest summer blockbusters ever. Meant for a July 3rd release. But then it was pushed back to July 2nd for huge demand. A cast of this size well built for a film this size and the actors they casted were all enjoyable to watch. dir. Emmerich & writer. Devlin, who are producers under the imprint of CENTROPOLIS Entertainment had prior hits (Universal Soldier, Stargate) and this was their biggest one yet. The teaser trailer had everybody losing it. Especially with The White House getting torched. The speech by Bill Pullman as president Whitmore to the last line of defense is one of the great movie speeches ever. The merchandise was crazy. Toys, video games, prequel publications (one was a novel and the other was a comic from by Marvel), etc. The cropduster's character was actually abducted as presented in Independence Day #0 from Marvel Comics. No.1 film of 1996 and Academy Award winner for Best Visual Effects. As for the 2016 sequel aka Resurgence........ Well you'll have to see that for yourself.

yeah, I saw the teaser during the superbowl live and it blew my mind and made me so hyped for the film. I actually ended up buying and reading the novelization first, before seeing the movie. but the novel used the original ending. which i didn't know about. my local wal-mart had also gotten in the tie-in comic. but that used the theatrical ending. I remember flipping thru it in the store, but seeing the panels of the ending, i caught sight of a fighter jet and pilot flying into the main weapon, instead of the crop duster like the original ending, and I slammed the book shut. I thought they had changed the ending so President Whitmore sacrificed himself and feared i had just spoiled myself. when i finally got to see the film i was confused at first, then got what they did.

I’ve always liked the parallel with this movie and with The War of the Worlds. In the War of the Worlds, the invading aliens “caught a cold” and were killed by a biological virus/bacteria.

I first watched it years ago at my neighbours house (was about 15) and my neighbour was convinced he was going to be the next president of the US and it ended up with me wanting to be the first lady (had a crush on him)😂. From a SFX standpoint, nearly 30 years on, this movie stands the test of time. The aliens look alien. The action sequences are top notch. The destruction of landmarks are the best in cinematic history. This movie has a realistic feel about it that cheaper movies of the era lack, and that modern movies try to solve with CGI.

Fun fact the man that was alone in the office building while the city is exploding is Volker Engle the man who actually did the special effects for Independence Day and he won an award for it. Considering how well the effects hold up almost three decades later he earned it. The Presidents speech was not meant to be on the final cut. They hadn't written it yet so Bill Pullman was asked to improvise a speech and he delivered that. The reaction of the extras was genuine and the director decided to keep it. Great choice.

They used that scene of the guy with blond, curly hair in New York, running from the blast. What it had to do with the food, I don’t remember. Lol. This is still one of my top movies for the writing, the comedy, the drama, the effects, everything. Ugh, and I still cry when the First Lady dies and the daughter is asking if she’s sleeping. 😭😭😭😭

Fun fact. The actor who played the long haired scientist who was running Area 51 was played by Brent Spiner. The actor who is most known for playing Comander Data on Star Trek The Nex Generation TV series and films. I also think the same people who created this film made the Stargate film. The effects and designs of the tech has a very similar feel. Look totally different but it feels the same. This was the better film of the two but just another little tidbit.

I was a teen when this movie came out and it was epic seeing this in Theaters. It was this movie and Titanic that made me a fan of disaster movies too because I loved seeing different POVs and stories coming together to try and overcome something epic. Anyway, at the same time though, this movie hits differently for me and possibly others after 9/11 happened. Like you see the Twin Towers in this movie. For me personally, watching 9/11 coverage live at the time felt surreal because it reminded me of this movie because you saw people running on the streets and seeing those twin towers fall . . . yeah. I still love this movie, it just makes me emotional seeing it. Also THANK YOU for actually showing the parts of the other countries banding together (Middle East, Germany, Japan) and celebrating (Africa, Egypt, Australia). I haven't seen any other reaction channel show those 2 parts and I feel they are important.

Ehhh. The sequel was meh. It was cool seeing what humanity did with the alien tech, but then they just did a complete plot rehash of the first movie. Imagine if the sequel had been an epic war across the solar system as humanity tries to prevent the alien mothership from reaching Earth. Realistically, it landing would be a world-ending scenario all by itself.

I have to say, I saw this movie on the weekend it premiered, with a huge crowd, and the energy was amazing; one thing I appreciate a lot about your reaction, is how invested, and how seriously you take it. So many times, when people in their 20s today watch films from the 80s, etc. it can be really hard for the films not to seem cheesy, or quaint, or to have the less-sophisticated effects be a stumbling block. I think it says something about this movie, but also, more so your (all four of you) ability and willingness to invest, suspend disbelief, and meet the movie where it is at. When you mentioned earlier on "this is like a horror film," and were really *feeling* the stakes, the cities being destroyed, etc. it hit me, that outside of its cultural context, now 30 years later, I think you guys took the movie more "seriously" (for lack of a better word) than the original audience did. When it came out, it was very much a popcorn film, a big epic fun rollercoaster, with some jokes from the time that are now missed all these years later; I love that you guys are like, all right, the world is getting destroyed," and you aren't taking it lightly - and in that way, more sincere, more willing to invest, than the audiences of the time. I really appreciate that.

@@bhelliom3 No I don’t think their _Independence Day_ reaction was on their Patreon back in July, they all had several different film reactions with their _Tron_ reaction being the most recent one they did together as it was released on July 13 through Patreon and publicly on July 20. Eventually following the Tron reaction, the girls (Hailey and Stella) went on a vacation for 2-3 weeks hence the _Tron: Legacy_ and _Oblivion_ Reactions that were released 2-3 weeks ago respectively were both done by just James and Nobu and not all four of them. Their _Independence Day_ reaction happened sometime after the girls returned from their 2-3 week vacation so around the first 7 days of August (August 1-7) and James admitted during the intro of the video they missed the timing on doing a reaction for this film last month because they were likely reacting to other movies at the time such as _District 9, Elysium,_ and _Edge of Tomorrow._

I still think this is one of the best world ending movies. To think this was only Will Smith's 4th or 5th movie. Best thing in the beginning too is that its kind of realistic. The president did the best he could in the short amount of time he had, they tried to communicate first cautiously, everyone acted quickly. It's great.

Glad you all enjoyed this movie, it was one of my favorites growing up. When ever this, The Indiana Jones trilogy or The Mummy (1999) came on television I had to stop channel surfing and watch, didn't matter how far into the movie it was.

From German director, Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is one of his best work to date followed by The Patriot (2000) with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, Universal Soldier (1992) with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, and Stargate (1994) with Kurt Russell and Jaye Davidson.

This was great viewing at the cinema, as you say an epic sci-fi. Took me back to seeing Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back at the cinema, yep, I'm one of the older viewers on here! Keep up the good work.

Amazing movie... You can't imagine what it meant back in 1996. And the success was worldwide and it even reached us in Chile. I bought the VHS in advance before it was released... When I finally got it watched the movie with friends and family. Great reaction!!!

Loved your reactions throughout the entire thing, guys, felt like I was there with you. My friends and I were also in our 20-somethings back in 1996 when this was released that summer. Still one of my favorite sci-fi movies, and I think is still the pinnacle of alien invasion movies. I love how they use familiar tropes - flying saucers, 'grey' aliens, government conspiracy theories - and use them in an epic and original way, even the famous "give the aliens a cold" twist from War of the Worlds. This movie still looks great today. Loads of Easter Eggs too - did you hear Jeff Goldblum go "must go faster" at the end just like he said when escaping the T-Rex in Jurassic Park??

they even built it into how they designed things. like how, at the time, people that were obsessed with aliens and area 51, etc would share anecdotes they had learned about the base. and one of the stories was that numerous cement trucks had been seen going into the base during its construction (supposedly far more then the visible buildings accounted for). So they designed the under ground parts of the base with that in mind.

This movie is such a good example of "no small parts" even characters with one line have such distinct personalities.
