Now we have one that would go off script and turn it into a self praise rambling speech, and another who would forget where he was 3 mins in and drool on himself. We need Whitmore now more than ever.

Independence Day is one of my grandpa’s favorite movies. A couple of years ago (like 2010), I was at his house and it was on basic cable. He grabs the remote to turn up the volume and seriously asks me, “Have you ever seen this movie? Independence Day. It’s so good!” He passed at 104 years old like a few weeks ago. He was an ww2 veteran who fought in the battle for Hong Kong.

Bill Pullman did amazing at portraying veteran to President. I know you didn't like his decision to stay..but that is him an officer and commander. He needs to lead his people. He led by example which is what we were taught while serving. The way he cared about lives and trying to save the people. His speech was so amazing. I love this movie. Nah, then they'd simply take the precaution of installing antivirus software before attacking. Of course, they would need a compelling reason to bother attacking. Except for a living biosphere, there isn't a single natural resource on Earth that isn't FAR more abundant elsewhere in the solar system, and not locked up at the bottom of our comparatively deep gravity well. ID4 aliens in particular, who want natural resources, just cruised right past all those other planets & asteroids & comets, where they could have found enough material & fuel to build multiple Dyson Swarms or literally a billion copies of their mothership. One has to wonder why they would even bother exterminating organisms inhabiting an insignificant little planet to begin with, when they could have simply started harvesting the rest of the solar system with total impunity.

1. i grew up in roswell, nm, and the 50th-anniversary festival happened a year after this movie was released. it 100% fueled the CHAOS that hit our town for the ufo festival. we were a town of 50k, and we'd maybe had a few thousand visitors in prior years; 1997 was estimated to have 20k visitors, with 10-15k of those during the week of the festival. 2. in the early 80s, there was a comet or meteor or something that was projected to hit earth in our general location at the time (mexico). when i asked my mom what she/dad/we did, she said dad was working, so she took me outside to watch. she said if we're gonna go, we're gonna go instantly and with a view. 3. kristen, i have a crush on your laugh. :)

Strategic Air Command (SAC) was briefly raised to DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but the rest of the military remained at DEFCON 3 during that incident. At DEFCON 3, the Air Force must be ready to mobilize in 15 minutes. At DEFCON 2, the entire Armed Forces must be ready to go to war within 6 hours. At DEFCON 1, nuclear war is imminent or has already begun, and the entire military must be ready for immediate response.

Such a classic. There are so many lines from this that live entirely rent-free in my head. I also think the little girl actor knocked it out of the park in her delivery of 'is mommy sleeping now?' It always gets me.

Filming the speech scene was also weirdly synchronistic: It was shot in front of the hanger that once housed the Enola Gay, one of the bombers that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan on Aug. 6, 1945. The scene was filmed exactly 50 years later. "We will not go quietly into the night," seemed to be a reference to Dylan Thomas' classic poem "Do not go gentle into that good night". The poem was fully recited in Interstellar.

Such a good movie. It's a shame there isn't a sequel for it, just like my other favorite film, Pacific Rim.

I CLEARLY remember watching this in theaters on the 4th. Went to a matinee and came out thinking, "That was awesome! And we still get fireworks tonight!" Epic movie! Especially at the time.

49:09 it's so cute when young'uns discover ideas that have been around forever. Many many many wars have been started just to unify people to a common enemy... or distract them from scandal. Also, many movies have been made about it. Try *Wag The Dog.*

Hitting the side of the tv used to work in old tube style televisions. No cable, no streaming and 3 channels. Want to change the channel? Go outside, slowly turn the 40ft. antennae attached to the side of the house, that stuck above the roof.

Your mentioning Earth uniting against an alien attack was explored in the early 60's in two outstanding Outer Limits episodes. The Architects of Fear (S1.E3) and Nightmare (S1.E10) featuring a very young Martin Sheen.

Architects of Fear was clearly an inspiration for the "threat" used to unite Earth in "Watchmen". The episode of"The Outer Limits " playing on Silk Spectre I's TV when Silk Spectre II and Nite Owl visit her at the end is Architects of Fear, as an homage.
