Yes, Julie! I hope she can find a version of the two of them, one after the other, as it should be! YT's been doing some serious scrubbing of Zep and others these last few months, it seems, argh! Actually, I just found one for her! It's a "fan edit," with Super 8 and only 2 minutes of "Rain," dammit, but I'm still gonna put the link in her request box and hopefully she'll RE-react to a whole version this time!

This song & The Rain song back to back are beautiful together, & Plants skit for their movie (for lack of a better word). They each have a skit to their music, from the Madison Square Gardens 3 night concerts. Their movie with this name is a great watch.

You really should check out " Rock and roll " live version from Knebworth in 1979 and from the 02 arena in 2007. Another great live pick is " Nobody's fault but mine" and " Achilles last stand " , both from Knebworth. Robert Plant does an amazing harmonica solo !

Here's a fun fact, George Harrison from the Beatles once said that Led Zeppelin couldn't write and play a ballad. Jimmy Page literally said " Hold my beer!" and wrote the music AND lyrics for " The Rain Song" another fun fact is that "The Song Remains The Same" was originally just supposed to be an intro to "The Rain Song" but the band liked the way it sounded so much that they expanded it into the studio version!

A couple of notes: -I believe Harrison’s statement to Bonzo was more along the lines of “you guys don’t write ballads”, rather than, “you guys CANT write ballads” (even though “thank you” from LZII is certainly a ballad)… - Robert Plant wrote the lyrics to “the rain song”, I’ve never heard Jimmy, or anyone else who would know, claim otherwise. -Jimmy included a musical nod to Harrison in the fist two chords of “the rain song” they match the two chords in Harrison’s most famous ballad, “something” …the chords that play as he sings the words, “…she moves…”

I believe the album "Houses of the Holy" is one of those albums you can sit and listen to from beginning to end and feel good that you did. It starts with the song, "The Song Remains the Same". It is nice to learn that you are exploring these tunes.

The live version is short probably due to copyright. The full version is in the film The Song Remains the Same, which is a concert at Madison Square Garden during the Houses of the Holy 1973 tour. The film is quite weird, as it combines shots of the band playing live with some cinematic segments in which the band members showed their personal fantasies (in the segment of this song and The Rain Song, Robert Plant appears as some sort of a medieval knight who is going to rescue a maiden in a castle). Most of those segments are pretty cheesy, but for a long time this was the only audiovisual document of Led Zeppelin performing live.

Great reaction! You HAVE to do the live version again, but let it go into the Rain Song. Those two songs were Robert Plant's section of the movie, and there's a whole video connecting the two songs. You'll need at least a half hour for it.

For me, having listened to the live version first, the studio version will always sound strange. For a better appreciation of this song, it is followed and linked with "The Rain Song" (on that same live performance) ... which is an absolute must.

Yeah that short live version is such a tease. If You have a chance watch the entire live version. There's 2 ones from the movie and ones from the concert.. the only difference is the movie has Robert a knight saving a young damsel. But if you noticed the entire song is played with a 12-string guitar. Which is extremely difficult for most people Really The Song Remains the Same and the Rain Song should be played together but it's hard to find the video live with both of them together

Watch the entire video from the Song Remains the Same movie where you will get to see all of Robert Plants "fantasy" sequence ( each band member did one for the feature , Jimmy in "Dazed & Confused" , John Paul Jones in "No Quarter" and John Bonham in "Moby Dick" ) in the movie & on the sound track , "The Song Remains the Same " segues into "The Rain Song" . Roberts fantasy sequence rolls out over the 2 songs 🙂

A lot of the chords jimmy page uses here in 1973 remind me of the chords that would be used in the music of the 1980’s, by people like Sting, Andy summers, by the Edge of U2, & Peter Gabriel…very airy, very spacey….chords with a lot of room.
