I feel like most music/movies and art in general mostly revolves around love/lust, money, and drugs it’s just the different ways artists go about saying it. So I think it’s hypocritical when I hear people like him say they don’t like hearing those topics a lot when the only difference is trap artists use more vulgar language when depicting such topics

Bob I completely hear you on boring lyrics (and I’m only 24 minutes into the vid) but one of my favorite things about hip hop is that two artists can say the same thing but the sound determines how I experience it. This is definitely one of those albums where I expect you to like it more when you’re not reading lyrics. It’s all vibes

Bob I think there a few things you’re failing to consider with regards to the hit song PMW (all I really need). Here Rakim Mayers breaks down our modern society into three simple categories. As humans, our purpose of life is to procreate. Here, as soon as possible Rocky highlights his desire for the female genitalia, listing it as his number 1 priority. Following this, we are reminded of the system of capitalism that we are oppressed by. In order for us to survive we must have the means to obtain food and shelter. Under capitalism, we trade our labour for money for which we can afford the necessities and even luxuries once you reach the level of wealth. However , the darker side of this capitalist system is referenced with the final of our trio of human requirements, weed. As a smoker myself, I resonate with this, but I think generally speaking Rocky refers to the vices that get us through the dark society in which we live. It’s a beautiful commentary, calling back to Maslows heirarchy of needs in which self actualisation is only obtainable after all other needs are met. Asap Rocky offers his own interpretation which we can all relate to.

It’s a bit naive of him to dismiss those lyrics just because they can come across as basic and ‘heard this one before’ Rocky’s from an environment where that mindset is the norm and he’s rapping from that perspective, plus it’s hard to argue against those 3 things they’re all pretty dope

I think Clams Casino as a producer is someone to look into. His solo work is probably not worthy of or suitable for a video reaction, but I think the genre of Cloud Rap would seriously not have been what it was without him. It is such a unique sound that is instantly recognizable on any track.

I can definetly see not liking the lyrics because you can't connect to them, but that's almost what I like with Rocky. With some rappers, the appeal is the relatability, but with Rocky I find that he lives such a different life than me that listening to his music is almost like watching a movie. I mean it goes with his entire brand too, like wearing extremely expensive clothes, marrying Rihanna, crazy music vides, etc. He portrays his life to be so luxerious that it creates an environment that shouldn't be taken too seriously, it's more of a feeling. I find myself loving the production, and just laughing at the lyrics, imagining that Rocky's laid-back personality doesn't intend for the lyrics to be too serious

I used to feel similarly about Rocky where I loved his production and choruses but he wasn’t interesting to me as a person or artist but recently his lyrical style has grown on me. Part of it is me just accepting that’s who he is but also I kinda hear the words differently , hard to explain I’m not exactly seeing a deeper message if there is one but I just see the art of it somehow even though I initially thought of him as surface level.

1:29:20 Regarding your criticisms of the lyrics i do understand its not exactly "deep/conscious" content, as even rocky acknowledges, but i do think you dismiss the specifity of rockys lyrics quite a bit. Eg; rocky talking about slightly alternative, usually white dominated, high fashion brands (eg; rick owens), especially when mixed with more typical nyc street talk, was very unique at the time and paved the way for alot of modern artists. Basically theres alot of regional and cultural specificty to his "clothes, money, women" talk which i feel you dismiss/dont pick up on.

i understand your sentiment with the lyrics bob. rocky was young at this time and this album is 12 years old by now. I hope you listen to his album Testing eventually I enjoy it a lot more you can see the growth while he still talks about drugs and flexes its less and he raps about a different stage of life that he is in while experiments more with his sound. Rocky lived a lot of the stuff he talks about so this is his way of expressing himself at this time. As he grows he music grows too. love the vids bob

Regarding your question about why would Rocky say that he's against conscious rap; I wouldn't take that line literally, I think that the sentiment behind that line is 1) trying to be cool as some young people don't think that thought-provoking themes are entertaining 2) refusing to ce categorized - you gotta understand that A$AP Rocky's sound was completely unprecedented in hip-hop history - he combined local sounds from Memphis, Texas and New York while also mixing the classic 90s boom bap, Southern rap and chop'n'screw with contemporary synth-heavy psychedelic cloud rap and pop appeal. All of that put him in a completely unique position and that's why I think he was so afraid of being put in any box. Rocky himself evolves into much more of a conscious rapper later in his career, especially regarding themes of religion, authenticity and mass incareceration. I think it's safe to say you're not a huge fan of this album after your first listen, but I'm glad you liked the last two tracks of the normal edition, Phoenix and Suddenly, cause they indicate the direction that he goes in on his next album - AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP. You will probably enjoy that one more as it is way more lyrically diverse and has a less dated sound than this album. I personally enjoy both but his next record is definitely my favourite from his catalogue and is often considered to be his masterpiece.

One quick thing I'd like to add about the lyrics--- For context if you really break down the lyrics paired with the unconventional aesthetic it's intentional. This is very much his coming of age project. Ready to make his mark on the world and the game and he's letting us and everyone know it's not a game. While sharing a bit of his upbringing and culture. I'm going to do it. I'd say the best comparison is Travis Scott and Days Before Rodeo. Both projects release '13/'14 respectively.
@DJ-pb1vr

Also considering the album cover features a B/W, static, and glitch edit also intentional with the sound they were creating. And back in 2013 this was definitely different idk even know what project you'd really captures this especially before.

I ironically think the albums you have heard from ASAP are his worst. And that's not me saying they are bad, but I can see it being liked WAY more by people who were listening when it first came out. Like Odd Future, it was a whole era and more than the music. I think you will love TESTING, and At Long Last ASAP is probably his best, most complete album. I think you will more enjoy the production styles on those two albums. These sound dated in comparison. Again, that isn't me not liking it, I am more than obsessed with all of his albums. But as a new listener, I can see his first two albums being his weakest, which I guess would make sense. TESTING is my favorite album, but that's not a popular opinion, but At Long Last ASAP has to be his most commercially successful, and I totally understand why. It is for sure his most consistent. So I can't wait until you hear those!

AT.Long.Last.A$AP is a more mature and socially conscious version of A$AP Rocky I think you’ll enjoy it. It’s my favorite album by him.
