Hey! modus here, I had the honor of mixing & mastering the whole thing, and being the section leader for the intro - so I think I can speak for all the intro artists that we're glad you like it! It's nice to see thoughts from somebody who might not be into the genre as much. Keep it up!

So, I think a lot of the enjoyment of We Don't Play comes from actively being fans of Disciple. The label had already done a mega collab the year prior (Get Lemon), and while many loved it, many also wanted more. We Don't Play was meant to be a love letter to the fans, highlighting all the acts that made Disciple what it is today. It isn't necessarily meant to be a track you listen to all the time (altho some do, and that's okay!), but rather a showcase of what the label is all about. The callouts of each artist is meant to show how everyone has their own unique sound that they bring to Disciple, and how mixing them all together can surprisingly work! The main body of the song wasn't produced by everyone all at once in the studio, of course, which is why the callout section is there. Yeah, it's gimmicky and cheesy, but that's the point! Think about it this way: if Monstercat were to do a major label mega collab like this, having a callout section like that highlighting each artist's sound would be reasonable, as every fan listening to it would be incredibly excited to hear each artist being put into the spotlight. It's the same thing here. TL;DR: if you're not a Disciple fan (or even just a fan of these artists), you won't really "get" the appeal of We Don't Play. It's not meant to be a standalone track as much as it's meant to be a love letter to the fans who've been listening to Disciple for a long time.

nah, monstercat don’t have signed artists, or even core artists for that matter. there is like a small handful of artists now that only release on monstercat. everybody is jumping to and from the label now.

Also ye when It comes to showcasing what each individual artist brings to the label you can see that reflected even more in the rushdown remix too, listen to the song and tell me if KillinVoid and Skybreaks part sound alike at all, cos if u can convince me they do, I'll cashapp u $500. they both serve to showcase that these labels have heavy hitters and that everyone has such a unique style, at least from my perspective, in the og ver u can tell just as much cos Oliverse's part sounds nothing like what Chibs part sounds like, and chibs piece sounds nothing like what Terravita did (all 1.5 secs of it lmao)

The original honestly just sounded like a jarring mismatch of styles and samples put together for the purpose of, like you said, having an excuse to slap a ton of names on a song. I've never really found the staple "Disciple sound" most artists on the label have to be that enjoyable. On the other hand, I actually somewhat enjoyed the remix, definitely more than the original. On top of being a different sound I could get behind, It was a lot more stylistically consistent, which was a lot easier on the ears. I loved the drop at the end initially, but it soon started stumbling over itself and it ruined itself for me very early on, which by your facial expressions it appears you share the same sentiment, though feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! On a tangentially related note, I would love to see you bring back the 0-10 ratings you used to give to songs, I loved listening to your opinions and statements on a piece, and then afterwards wrapping it all up into a final rating! If I were to give both a rating, they would be: Original: 3/10 Remix: 6/10
@gindamusic12963 жыл бұрын
I have basically the same opinion. Remix was better as it was more consistent but the parts where the artist's names are said just felt gimmicky. Could have actually been really cool.

My opinions The og is slightly better, but both are phenomenal The drops for the remix are slightly better, but the completely made the rap worse, so I am kinda indifferent, except for how bad they made the rap for the remix
