Who is your favorite Mission Impossible villian?? SPOILERS ALLOWED

I really enjoyed Hoffman's presence; he's probably my favorite. But the villain of the 5th movie is probably the best so far, who ties into the 6th. And the other villain in the 6th, the main one, I'd actually place along Hoffman as my favorite.

All the villains in general were good in the saga, but if I have to choose a few: Sean Ambrose in MI-2, Owen Davian in MI-3, very threatening, Solomon Lane from MI-5 and MI-6 and the villain played (SPOILER ALERT): by Henry Cavill in MI-6, who is the other villain in that movie, since there are two of them, the other is Solomon Lane, who already came from the previous movie.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was so good in this, he could do menacing so well. The fact that we never find out what the Rabbits Foot is feels completely in keeping with the style of the film and I love that the process used to make masks becomes visibly more advanced as each movie progresses.

The reason Billy Crudup's character "took credit" is so that way Ethan Hunt and his team aren't seen as rogue agents. They even said they wouldn't tell Billy's character so that way if they messed up and Lawrence's character asked Billy's characters it would hold up. He's sticking out for them (and it also makes him just look less like a mole).

Keep in mind that up until Rogue Nation, each film purposefully had a different director so that every film stood out on its own. That’s why MI:2 was so different from MI:1 and MI:3 being so different from MI:2. That decision was by Tom Cruise himself. After Rogue Nation, director Christopher McQuarrie would finish the rest of the franchise with Fallout and Dead Reckoning parts 1 & 2.

This is the movie that really starts the Mission Impossible franchise. You can tell they started to figure out the formula and each movie after this one they improve on the formula by leaps and bounds. There’s a reason why after this movie, each movie gets better and better and better. Unlike other sequels which tend to get worse and worse.

Tom Cruise wanted to "humanize" the character after the second film became more about flashy quick cuts and slow-mo pigeons. After the previous director and he disagreed on the tone of the film, Cruise happened to come across an episode of Alias on television one night. The next thing you knew, J.J. Abrams was asked to develop and offered to directing the film. As crazy as it may seem now, this one cost around $25 million more to make than the last movie, but brought in $150 million less and became the least profitable film in the franchise. At one point, Tom Cruise's career was considered over by many and Paramount cut ties with his production company three months after the film was made. Miraculously, they managed to get another film in development a few years down the line, only after he started taking on supporting roles for a few films. But this film really does reboot the series and starts to finally build a "team" that was present in the original TV series and really only existed briefly in the first film, which will begin getting carried over into the subsequent ones. And rather than an unstoppable sunglasses wearing superhuman that he was in the previous movie, this films bring back a relatable vulnerability with the character that remains over the next three films as well, and being able to throw in some goofy moments here and there without taking itself too seriously. Another fun anecdote is that this movie was shot on a mix of film and digital so that they could blend the CGI effects to match better with a grain filter placed over it.

So the transition with the mask... is one of the best in all of movie history. It's brilliantly done with the fake out of going behind Luther's back. As for how they actually do the masks... it's a combination of actually having masks (yes Hollywood is that good at making latex masks of people. As long as they don't have to move a lot they are completely convincing) and VFX face replacements. Done right, using the right tool for each part of a shot or sequence, it can be completely convincing. Philip Seymour Hoffman was so good as the villain. That interrogation on the plane is just plain evil. He shows zero fear or worry about being captured, he is still in control and asking the questions, not Ethan. Philip is pushing the buttons. And it's creepy. You are bang on about the 2nd movie. It's good. It's fun... but it is missing them being spies. And from this movie on... they are always spies and get more spyier every single time. To the point where you start questioning how they could possibly double down on it for the next one.
@jessecortez9449
@jessecortez9449 Жыл бұрын
The masks are much better in real life than people think. Back in the 90's, during George H. W. Bush's presidency, a CIA official did an interview as a fake reporter disguised with one of their field operative masks and fooled him the entire time until she removed it at the end to reveal who she really was. Jonna Mendez was her name and photos of the disguised interaction and reveal were classified for years but were eventually released and are even on display in the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C.

Yeah, the awesome masks were all over the original show. The TV show basically tried to do this every week and pulled it off more often than not, but they blew through budgets and schedules just like a real government spy agency. "Mission: Impossible" was the other ongoing franchise that Lucille Ball greenlit at Desilu around the same time as "Star Trek", which was also a product of her studio. In a one hour weekly show they didn't have time to have a disastrous mission followed by a kick-ass mission like the movies do but they managed to concoct some kick-ass stuff for the team to do every week. The inspiration for the show was primarily a movie called "Topkapi" which followed a talented group of criminals trying to steal a thing and the centerpiece of the film is an extended, silent robbery scene that this movie series and loads of other things have been cribbing from ever since - if you see it, you'll get it. The original idea for the show was to have the IMF recruit criminals and international disreputable characters, maybe even psychotically damaged thrill-seeking types, to carry out these dodgy missions that the US government couldn't be seen to be doing but the network knocked that on the head because they thought the idea of the US government collaborating with criminals was just too ridiculous. Heh. The movies are SOOOOO much noisier than the show. The perfect mission on the show was one in which our team got in, did their thing, and then got out without anyone ever being aware that they had been there. Tom and his guys blow up half of whatever exotic foreign locale they're working in, especially in the next couple movies. I got my head around the difference by telling myself that the movies were about the least competent IMF team ever whereas the show was about the best of the best. The show was much more about slow burn suspense than action, which isn't better or worse, just different. The show's very much worth a look, but I've no idea how such a thing would play on a channel like this.

J.J. Abrams, from years of working behind the scenes on many projects to getting major shine with television (Felicity, Lost & Alias) and co-writing Armageddon (no.1 film of 1998). M-I:3 is his directorial film debut and his first of 3 sequels as an producer. Because M-I:2, despite it's success was considered the weakest and a new direction had to be set onward. So M-I:3 is direct sequel to the first film and just as good, beat for beat. The stakes have certainly grown higher, the villains could be anyone and well.......... Cruise as Ethan Hunt still defies the odds even when his potential marriage is in danger. All over the place and just an incredible sequel. From here on out, every mission connects. 4-6 are really going to blow your mind.

As an Italian I can say that their Italian is not so good to pass for a native one (especially from someone wearing a uniform) , but in Italy we dub movies so it was entirely re-recorded by Italian actors. Anyway the situation was funny and the scene with everybody yelling in the street pretty accurate (except the gestures, a little too stressed on them).

Great reaction by you two. Brad Bird really brought his bag 'o' tricks to this one and it's so good, even things like the colouring, the super saturated colours and rich-rich blacks, visually stunning. At this point I was really loving how each instalment had it's own visual look and approach to storytelling. Phenomenal fun fact: that beginning pre-credit interrogation scene wasn't 'designed' that way in the script... at some point they just outright grabbed that chunk from the end section, placed it the front, noticed it 'played' and kept it.

This movie is directed by JJ Abrams, who at the time was a successful showrunner for his show ALIAS, a mission impossible type series. It was one of the reasons the studio chose him to handle this movie. So the whole IMF thing was based on the ALIAS from his show. You should react to ALIAS, you're gonna love it.

Leverage is another good show that I think they would enjoy as well. Not sure how its continuation Leverage: Redemption is since I haven't seen it yet, but if it's anything like the original, it'll be just as good. Burn Notice is pretty decent as well. I would enjoy watching them react to both shows.

Finish off the Mission Impossible series, it just gets better and better with each film. I would love to see you review the enire James Bond series starting with Sean Connery in Dr. No and watch how the series grows and represents the tine period and hot genres of the decades.

the Mythbusters tried the mask gig, and they did manage to fool a number of people to a certain distance away. it's more about mannerisms than face shape, but it's somewhat possible.

To me personally, this movie was the establishing base for the Mission Impossible movies series. Yes the first movie introduced the character of Ethan, but this movie established a solid plot that will be followed and referenced to in future Mission Impossible. My fav of all of the movies even tho Tom Cruise just get crazier stunts in each one lol.

You should check out the movie Underworld (2003), it's a great movie about vampires and werewolves. Fact: the actor who plays the leader of the Volturi Aro in Twilight is in this movie and here he's the leader of the werewolves, he's very badass in this movie 👀

Owen Davian, the villain in this movie is the best in the series. The late great Philip Seymour Hoffman played him with such terrific and terrifying gravits. Heck, I consider Davian to be one of the best villains in Cinematic history, up their with Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber. (Henry Cavils is 2 best villain the series. His intensity and physicality brought a challenge to Tom Cruise's Ethan hunt. Sean Harris is a great actor but as a villain he is not given much to define himself in the other movies.)

I agree that the film series gets a lot better with this chapter. The team has solidified a bit... At least, we have Luther & Simon Pegg. It's still centered on Tom Cruise, and it still kinda feels like his adventure. The rest of the team seems there, to support him. In the next one, the team seems more like a team. Sure, Tom is still a large focus, but the other members of his team get a lot more development and things to do. None of the films are bad, but I think you'll enjoy the next one coming up. ALSO: Baja Blast - Great call. Almost as good as a Ghost Proto Call.

The third movie is my favoite because of many reasons. The villain is incredibly threatening. Ethan’s motivation is personal. The action is spot on but also very grounded. Everything feels close but on a grand scale and I like that a lot. The action in the upcoming movies gets crazier but it loses me for some reason.

They use the actors but they dub over the voices with the other actors voices. This was done in the series as well.They just got a lot better at the transition or unmasking also the use of the voice changer makes the stakes higher that there’s a chance of a fake out. In the show they had only one master of disguise that could imitate voices but the all could be disguised but not really do voices. The voice changer gag really makes the difference between the movies and the shows but I really haven’t seen the full extent of what happened in the show played out in the movies only to a certain point. There’s some things in the show that really could be good for movies but they haven’t got to them yet.

Tom cruise was great in Rock of Ages and a passable Reacher in the first Jack Reacher movie (it could be fun to watch as a laugh because reacher is 6’5 250lbs and Tom well isn’t) RoA might be a pain though because it’s a musical and copyright is well a nightmare at times but it’s definitely worth a watch and Cruise is actually a pretty good singer.
