The Twit of the Year sketch was inspired by some real-life upper-class twits who were John Cleese's neighbors. The man likes his sleep, but they would come home, very drunk, at all hours of the night, slam their car doors, have loud, pointless conversations with each other in the driveway, etc.

My favorite "sport" of Python is the Philosopher's Soccer Match - Greek vs. German Philosopher's - which even made my Grandfather laugh! The Python's were intellectual, and made such brilliant satire.

We had a Monty Pythons Club in high school. We would gather for movie nights and to watch episodes of the Flying Circus. Then of course there were one-liners used as greetings in the halls. A wink is as good as a nudge to a blind bat!

The Silly Olympics wasn’t done for the regular series, but for the “Fliegender Zirkus” German episodes. And STILL gets confused with the classic Upper Class Twits sketch to this day.

You SO remind me of ME when I was a younger girl back in the late 70s early 80s when my older brother introduced me to Monty Python. My mom hated them but I immediately fell in love with the humor. So glad I found your channel

I'm so glad I grew up on Monty Python thanks to the L.A. public broadcast channel; I was just eleven or twelve when my best friend and I watched many English comedy shows in 1976 on PBS. I still laugh today at the same stuff I watched back then. Cheers, 🥸

Actually, Python got there first, by eight years! The O'Lympics featured in Spike's "Q7" in 1978, but "Upper Class Twit" first aired in 1970.

Spike Milligan always said that Monty Python 'stole' his material and the Twit of the Year is an example of this. Spike did exactly the more or less the same sketch a few years before: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJ6thKWMg7ChqJI

The only truly posh Python was probably Michael Palin, in terms of family background and schooling. The others were basically middle class grammar-school boys... apart from Cleese, whose mother happened to inherit some money which allowed her to pay for his private education. Even so, his father was an insurance salesman, which is hardly an upper-class job.

@@MeganRuth Cleese: “[People] get competitive about this business of being oppressed,” Cleese said. “You do know the British have been slaves twice, right?” Cleese continued: “I want reparations from Italy.” “And then the Normans came over in 1066... they were horrible people from France and they colonised us for 30 years and we need reparations there too, I’m afraid.” In a final explanation of his remarks, Cleese said: “The thing is, I’m going to be dead soon. That’s why I’m in favour of global warming - I don’t want to be cold ever again.” 'Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation So there must be some truth in it... I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU.'
