For an old fart like me, who has loved this album since 1967 it is amusing to watch someone unfamiliar reacting for the first time. That opening "Day begins" is actually an orchestral medley of melodies from each of the songs which follow. After hearing the entire album, you will appreciate the album's opening even more. 😄

Omg! I was not expecting this so quickly. This album is a masterpiece that follows a whole day from beginning to end. My favorite on this album is on side 2 although I just really love the entire album as a whole. You may recognize a song or two from side 2. Thank you so much, Crystal. It’s always so exciting to introduce masterpieces like this to first time listeners. You are so sweet, Crystal. I’m sending so much love and wishing everyone a beautiful day. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🎹🎼🔥😊

Crystal, I'm so excited you covered this album! This was very much ahead of its time, a collaboration of classical and rock music that takes the listener through the course of a day. What i move about the Moody Blues is their ethereal lyrics and their vocaists. Justin Hayward emerged as their main lead singer and is featured prominently on side 2, which features the big hits from this album, Tuesday Afternoon and the timeless classic, Nights in White Satin (both sung by Hayward). I can't wait to hear your thoughts on side 2! I loved your analysis of this, and so glad you enjoyed it! When i was in middle school, we had an assignment to listen to this album and write a report on the feelings and images it conjured.

Jerry!!! It warms my heart right on up to see you here today!!! 🖤🧡 I am so glad you liked this one! The vocals and lyrics are absolutely ethereal and mystical! ✨ I really loved every single moment! You nailed it, this album was definitely ahead of its time and that got me thinking. The connections to the concept of time in this one is mind blowing- it was forward and futuristic in its execution, however it delved into elements of the past and revolves around the passage of time in the context of a day- and days are timeless. I am STOKED to arrive at side 2! 🖤 I can’t wait to get there! Sending you all of my love!

They semi-recently uncovered the lost original 1967 stereo mix. The DVD audio of it is spectacular. The label had developed some new recording equipment and wanted to show it off in both classical and rock and the Moody Blues were determined to be the band on their label best suited to it having a flautist in the band. They supplied the London Festival Orchestra and the conductor worked with the band to create seamless intros and transitions between the songs. Side 2 takes the whole thing to another level that the intro hints at. A brilliant concept album. And remarkable as the band was previously a British Invasion RnB group with the pop hit "Go Now" to their name. The song titles are the time of day...the actual song title.

This was never my favorite Moody Blues album, although there are songs on it that I like. I haven't listened to it in a long time, though, and your commentary and analysis have convinced me that I need to revisit it with fresh ears. This may be my favorite thing about you, that you give me a different perspective, a different way to listen.

The first piece is very much an Overture for the rest of the music on the albums. You will clearly hear those themes in the songs on this album as you go. Thanks for this reaction.

This album definitely got a lot more famous with age and is now recognized as a pioneering album in progressive and symphonic rock. It was a turning point for the band as before this they were more of a pop group. You may recognize a couple tracks on side 2 as Nights In White Satin has been used all over and Tuesday Afternoon is very popular, too. Have a great day, Crystal!

Nice choice! Moodies On The Threshold of a Dream was the first music to enter my ears and soul on my first psychedelic experience back in 1972. Prior to that, on a warm summer night in 1968 when Tuesday Afternoon playing on the radio made me feel that something immense was going on and I needed to find out what it was.

My 18th b-day I dropped my first (of ten or so, same for shrooms, nothing since college, lol) acid with about five friends, and my 2 years-older brother shepherded us all, lol. In case you hadn't noticed, there were different lead singers on each of the tracks and a fourth member recited the poem. Also the songs and poetry were written by all 5 members of the band. Other than the Beatles, not sure many groups can claim that.

OK, this is bizarre. I was just thinking yesterday that you should react to "Days of Future Passed" soon, as it is one of those A-list iconic albums of the 1960s (sort of the Moody Blues' version of "Sgt. Pepper"). And like "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Pet Sounds", very influential. The heights of Baroque Pop. With a little psychedelia thrown in for good measure. I still recommend that you also check out Love's "Forever Changes" album from this same period.

This is one of my favorite albums. I've loved this one ever since my dad used to play this for me when I was growing up. This is one of the albums which helped spawn progressive rock! You're right, this album is magical, as are quite a lot of records by the Moodies. Interesting facts: after having some success (and failures) as a popular British blues group, the lineup had some changes, most notably gaining Justin Hayward as the new singer/guitarist. As they were developing a brand new sound to their music, their record label, Deram/Decca, had commissioned The Moodies to make an album in conjunction with a symphony orchestra (aside from Phil Spector's wall-of-sound productions, this had almost never been done before). This album would be a rock-'n'-roll reinterpretation of a sampling of works by composer Anton Dvorak; the label wanted to put out a record which could demonstrate what their engineers could accomplish with Stereophonic sound (up until the sixties, rock records were very rarely mixed/processed manufactured in stereo). However, as The Moodies worked more and more with the orchestra and wrote more and more new songs, the decision was eventually made to ditch the Dvorak covers and make a concept album where each piece of music would represent different times of the day--in 1967, concept albums were the new hip thing which rock bands were doing, i.e. Sgt. Pepper by The Beatles, Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, Freak Out by Frank Zappa & The Mother's, etc. The result was this amazing piece of work, which became the first of many incredibly successful records by The Moody Blues (after finishing this reaction, I wholeheartedly recommend checking out their follow-up, In Search of the Lost Chord)! I can't wait for your reaction to Side 2 of this wonderful album!

Oooh, a lovely surprise! Classic era Moodies is almost as consistently transcendent as Zeppelin or Floyd; my favorites are the two albums after this, especially Threshold Of A Dream, although I'm still on my own journey with them. I hope they recur on the channel! Your sophisticated analysis and emotional openess suits them perfectly; you're exactly the listener they're aiming at.

Crystal gettin' Moody Bluesy! Cool! Wonder if u were inspired by a comment someone made recently saying how much they thought u'd like them, and this album especially. I agreed, saying the dreamy gorgeousness of, say, "Tuesday Afternoon" would likely just send you. That's on Side Two, which I like better than One, but I'm almost certain ONLY cos I know Two much better, lol! I'm off to Vermont to visit a friend for a week, but look forward to catching up with you and other Tubers when I return. Cheers!

You definitely should do their "Classic 7" (Days of Future Passed considered as 1, counting up through Seventh Sojourn). Personally I feel their style and vocals really reach their full potential in album 4, and 4-7 are my favorites. No more orchestra after this first album though, they do it all themselves with mellotron/Chamberlain and lots of layering.

Technically that album was their 4th release; not even close to being their debut. I say technically because many people forget about "The Magnificent Moodies", which had the hit "Go Now". Most people start counting with "Days of Future Passed". And then "In Search of the Lost Chord" came after Days and before On the Threshold.

The following albums they did have more variety as they no longer needed an orchestra and wrote all their own songs. The orchestral interludes in this were done by a non-group member and at times pad it out for me.

A brilliant album, that unfortunately was poorly recorded. Also, there are 2 different mixes of this album, the original 67 mix, and the later 78 remix. The 78 remix isn't a patch on the original 67 mix. Likelihood is this is the 78 mix, as most releases of this album are now. There have been some car crashes on the way, in 2017 they released the 50th anniversary which was a reissue of the original 67 mix. It was awful, as it was taken from a cassette tape of the original album. The only way to listen to this, is an original pressing
