I totally agree with the Showtime PPV Boxing analogy... you both have such detailed knowledge of the councils... it's mind blowing how deeply both of you have studied this area. Even though I believe you won on substance, I agree that Luigi's demeanor was more relaxed and confident (at least in the beginning). It wasn't a "textbook" victory, but it was a victory nonetheless. It was a very solid performance for both of you but especially for your first public debate. As a fellow Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) I also felt very proud to have such a well-studied intellectual heavyweight defending the Papacy and our Eastern Catholic unity with Rome. For what it's worth, even my 18-yr-old youngest daughter loved to listen to your channel, and you and Michael Lofton are some of her favorite Catholic apologists. (She's right. You're definitely a rising star, brother.)

As far as your comments on the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon and being signed by all the patriarchs there. That council was indeed signed by all the patriarchs. Yes, the Alexandrian patriarch (Dioscorus) was deposed during the council, but then before the council ended, the alexandrian Bishops were given time to elect a new patriarch, and that new patriarch signed off on the council making it official and signed and ratified by all the patriarchs at the time. So you are incorrect to say that the Alexandria patriarch did not sign the council. He did sign it, and Luigi was correct there as well. Have you read the Acts of the council translated by Price?

Ephesus didn't have support from Antioch at the time did it? When that's the case it doesn't seem like it's totally about conciliatory. Also a new patriarch to replace the current patriarch kind of misses the point that they didn't need the original patriarch to agree for the council to be considered infallible.

The point made around 47:00-48:00 about Vigilius's Orthodoxy in Constitutum 1 and Constitutum 2 is very important. In official teachings, the Pope (and even an ecumenical council) can err about matters of fact, but not about matters of faith. Consider two propositions: (1) the three chapters taught Nestorianism and (2) Nestorianism is a heresy. (1) is an interpretive question and thus a matter of fact about which the Pope (or a council) can err. (2), as a matter of faith, is not.

I still think Luigi “won” the debate even after this. Hard to say he won just because no one ever wins these debates, but he had the upper hand here. At 29:24 mark, you discussed the use of “suggestion” in the 6th EC. I don’t think you are understanding the point Luigi made there, but most of all, I think you may of misunderstood the history and development of the word. What dictionary are you using? I think I have an idea, but it would be helpful for you to clarify because as someone who has been in English, Latin, and Greek studies for school, the development of that word in those languages does not play in the Pope’s favor. We can look at Lamp’s greek dictionary, other greek dictionaries, the standard Latin dictionaries of that time it was written at the council, and we can look at early 1900s or 1901 dictionaries. Even so, if we use your definition and example in the video, it goes against what you are trying to prove. You defined suggestion as: "something that implies or indicates a certain fact or situation" Example you gave: There is no suggestion that he is involved in any wrongdoing. Btw, I’d like to know what dictionary that is from? Still, in this scenario, suggestion is used as some sort evidence, but it still wouldn’t mean the pope’s “suggestions” were examples of infallible statements or what you were saying here. When looking at ‘suggestion” in 1901 English, Patristic Greek and latin dictionaries, it means something very similar to what it means now. You are attempting to change the entire meaning of the word by being vague, and I don’t think that has weight to it. Actually the original greek word at the council literally meaning “offering up” is even worse to the Catholic position. More examples in English along the lines the way you were attempting to use that word that still do not help your case. 1. Her facial expression gave a suggestion of disappointment, though she didn't say anything. 2. The detective carefully analyzed the evidence, looking for any suggestion of foul play. 3. The dark clouds in the sky were a suggestion that a storm might be approaching. 4. Despite his confident tone, there was a subtle suggestion of uncertainty in his words. 5. The professor's raised eyebrows served as a suggestion that the student should reconsider the answer.

Now, I will say, it seems Luigi was unfamiliar with this topic, but I think that is because of how you worded it perhaps. It seems you were not clear on how the Pope Martin situation went down as he helped new patriarchs to come into postion in other sees. There’s some brothers from speakers corner in England who run a livestream every week to dispute catholics it’s called operation Steven . They usually have laypeople on who can’t explain their faith very well. The brothers are not rude it’s quite a civil thing . The topic at the moment is ‘proof of the papacy in the first 3 centuries.’ They claim there is absolutely none and the belief in the papacy is a modern thing .I would love to see you on there . I thought you did well! Love your self critiques, shows you care! Also honestly I think Luigi did much better than I expected but you won by a split decision! Luigi said that the 1st see cannot do anything like a pope can do without a council. Then when you brought up the example of popes excommunicating patriarchs without a council he brushed it off like “well it’s the 1st see, he can do that” it was a total cop out. You cannot set up rules like that and when they’re broken expect like it was no big deal. Seems like Luigi had no clear boundary for that authority, which was the basis for the debate! So I see that as a 10-8 round for you and edges you over in my decision.

You should try getting a good talk with Father Calvin Robinson. He is an Anglican priest who has basically rebelled against the heresy going on within the Anglican Church. He has an amazing speech at the Oxford Union from a year or two ago that made him famous in the online Christian communities. He was a reverend back in the Oxford Union appearance, but he was recently ordained by an Anglican Bishop. He is much like the Catholics and he supports much of Catholic Traditionalism, even if he is not a mackerel smacking papist like us. I hope you guys can have some Tridentine Mass attendees or priests on sometime...I attend an FSSP parish which just so happens to be next door to both a Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic and Maronite Catholic Church. The FSSP does not have the issues like the SSPX has been having over the years. I thought it would be fun to have Eastern Catholics who remain in focus Ad Orientum as well as having a Latin Rite Traditional Catholic as well. I will never consider myself traditional due to my past, but I am trying to be better at it, I have been speaking with a priest about enrolling in the Brown Scapular...and possibly following in both of my grandfathers' footsteps by joining the Knights of Columbus. Us Catholics also believe that Christ is the head of the Church. Christ is the invisible head, whereas the Pope is the visible head. Much like on the local level, the Bishop (both Catholic and Orthodox) is the visible head of the Church, but ultimately Christ is the head.

"Oh, I'm not going to try to argue who won or lost." *Proceeds to argue about a dozen times that he "won".* Also, it's incredibly bad form to try to argue like this AFTER the debate. Also, you don't concede the debate by conceding one point in the affirmative's case. Example: if I were to debate you on whether the Papacy has universal jurisdiction, and I were to admit that the Papacy in some form did exist in the Patristic era, that is a necessary point for your argument. Conceding that point does not, however, prove that the Papacy had and has universal jurisdiction. One might even concede that Vatican I is right in every point concerning Papal Supremacy or Universal Jurisdiction, minus one (that it is of Divine Right), and that would not be enough for the person to have conceded the debate.

I also believe that Catholic or Orthodox laity who faithfully follow Christ will not be punished for the inability of the bierarchy to get their crap in order.
