Honestly, I always thought this was Roger’s Bond at his most cool. You know what I mean? He approaches every scene with a cocky swagger and bulletproof attitude. Especially with the villains trapping him and outsmarting him, he always seems in control and makes it all look easy.

I also adore his style in this one in particular. Drinking bourbon and smoking cigars. This movie has one of the coolest Bond looks, in my opinion, when Moore is in his black turtleneck with the shoulder-slung holster, and he's carrying around that big revolver.

My earliest Bond memory is seeing a clip of the speedboat chase from Live And Let Die on Screen Test. I was 7 years old and have been an avid Bond fan ever since. Screen Test, for those too young to remember it or who live outside the UK, was a children's TV quiz where contestants would watch a movie clip then have to answer questions about it. I only remember one of the questions from the LALD clip - the boat that ended up in the swimming pool first went past a man sitting next to a small table, can you name two of the items on that table? To this day I can't watch that bit of the film without reeling them off in my head - drink, ash tray, packet of cigarettes and a book of matches...

Haha, Calvin, this one's really nostalgic for me - I got into Bond following the Skyfall pre-release hype and your old reviews pretty much acted as a gateway into the older films for ~10 year old me. LALD was my favorite Bond flick back then (and still is in my current top 5!) and so I gravitated towards this video more than any of your others. I distinctly remembered the parts about Rosie because she was one of my favorite characters, lol

Super funny - lots of great insights and opinions - and always completely entertaining. I have a special affection for LALD because it was the first movie I ever saw at the cinema, aged 10. My dad was a Bond fan, & I fondly remember being so excited to see this secret agent on the big screen that he was so passionate about. At the time I was vaguely aware of ‘the other fella’, but for me, Roger was my first Bond & has always remained my favourite, even if I can appreciate the brilliance of SC & DC in the role. Loved the film, & it cemented my lifelong passion for Bond. Only TSWLM surpasses it for me when it comes to RM films.

I remember seeing this movie on ABC television on a Saturday night in 2002. Back then ABC was trying to do a marathon of the series every Saturday night. Good memories. As for LALD, its really held up and a very entertaining debut for Roger Moore. Happy 50th anniversary!

I’ve been meaning to comment to you for some time. I am blown away by your infectious enthusiasm and find your charismatic presentation style highly entertaining and informative. I have to let you know that I went to the same Grammar School as Roger Moore. ! This was clearly before me but my English Teacher was also a former pupil and Roger”s best friend . I recall him saying that Roger was regularly berated by Staff as being ‘ a waste of space who would never amount to anything’ he was almost expelled after being caught drinking with females from the netball Team at sports events. I saw Dr No in Streatham (near the School) when I was 11 years old. When that gun barrel burst open on the screen I had no idea that I would be known as 007 in every job I ever had. My house is a shrine and basically I have been besotted with the character ever since that first gun barrel . I first saw Live and Let Die in 1973 at the Empire Leicester Square and Title song apart I think John Barry music was missed in a lot of the action sequences. The driver of the London bus was flown out from the. London Transport ,bus garage located in Streatham also . Two ‘foods for thought’ for you and your followers ) I think the Blofeld character could have provided more continuity had it been played by the same actor. My choice would have been Anton Diffring the icy cold Austrian actor who played the SS Colonel in Where Eagles Dare. Diffring made a few Horror movies but played the evil Nazi Officer in countless Post war movies. This was in fact ironic as he was not a Nazi but in reality gay and was forced to flee Germany in the war in order to elude the clutches of the Gestapo and possible internment in a Death camp. Diffring would have made a chilling Blofeld or had he been alive a Le Chiffre to rival Mads Mikkleson. 2) I am the ultimate 100% anachronistic surly sulk when it comes to fiddling about with the gun barrel at the beginning. It doesn’t bother non geeks but it bothers us and we are the loyal corps of fans who are worthy of consideration. It belongs at the beginning. I think Marc Forster in Quantum of Solace was reminiscent of the head chef who scraps the garlic and cheese mushrooms and the onion loaf which have attracted masses of customers. They want to make the. menu theirs .Such walking examples of pomposity and self importance want divorce themselves from being just another Bond film . He wanted to scrap the Bond theme too! Bit of that initially with Mendes who said the opening looked silly after a gun barrel I thought it improved it. Calvin I await your. Ew videos with eager anticipation👍👍

Another wonderful young Calvin review. Still laughing at the last one. AVTAK being the previous one, it was nice to contrast it with Roger in his pomp. Apparently, he wanted to do the double decker stunt himself, but it was too expensive for the insurance. Hope to see young Calvin again soon. Really look forward to them.

Every time I rewatch a movie now, I notice little details you've pointed out. I'm looking forward to your TWINE review, as it is has been my favorite Brosnan since I was a kid. I really hope that David Arnold/Scott Walker's "Only Myself to Blame" will earn a mention. One of the two most unfortunate unused Bond songs (the other being the Arnold/Bassey QoS song), and an important one, as its melody is prominently featured through Arnold's incredible score.

As an aside, It's a myth that the Arnold/Bassey song ['No Good About Goodbye'] was related to QOS in any way. Arnold himself said in 2009 it was barely started when 'Another Way to Die' was being made and only intended for Bassey's 'The Performance' album which Arnold co-produced.

The melody that accompanies the words "no good about goodbye" in the chorus shows up prominently in the QoS score. So, it was obviously connected in Arnold's mind. Maybe the song was written after the score was complete, or as an after thought?

I think this film really started the modern Bond era. Before this, the movies felt like often dreary sunday matinee films, to watch with a pipe and slippers. But this movie brought it all into the heavily swinging 70's. How many times have we seen speedboat chases after this film? But how many double-decker bus chases? The only thing which spoils it is the fact that the main villain looks identical with and without the mask, and he blows up like Jaws. I expect that's where they got the idea. But then they had to spoil it with the Man with the Golden Puns.

My wife is from South Africa and one of my first missions of our marriage was to watch all the bond films and have them rated from 000 to 007. I provided no personal opinion or context before we watched the film. We would discuss after she gave her uninfluenced opinion. I distinctly recall her giving Live and Let Die a 005. When I asked her why, she responded "It would have been a 006, but Rosie Carver is the most annoying character I've ever seen in a bond film. I hated her." Sheriff J W Pepper fan here. Terrific character and genuinely funny (imho). I just love LALD. It's a riot from start to finish. Definitely one of my favourite Bonds. I went to see it with my father who wasn't impressed. On the way home he insisted the casting of Moore was all wrong and that he was Simon Templar and always would be. The fact The Saint hadn't been in production for more than four years having no bearing on the decision!

LALD(1973) & TMWTGG(1974): I like these movies. These are cool movies. However... I think that this is not my Roger Moore yet. Maybe I don't like Guy Hamilton's directon very much. James Bond is too brutal in these films. Especially awful was the scene with Bond and Andrea Anders in Peninsula Hotel room. And of course the death of Kananga was WTF!? I also think that 1,85:1 aspect ratio is so unglamorous... *** My true Roger Moore is: 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985. I adore these last 5 movies! My favorite era in the franchise!

It's funny how in your review, you take the piss out of the movie and by the end you're saying "Live And Let Die is pretty damn awesome and feels like a real step forward for the franchise". Can't let the audience know how you actually feel until the end haha. But how did you at one point like TMWTGG so much that it was your #1 Bond film? Even as a die hard Roger Moore fan it seems odd that that'd be your favorite instead of literally any of his other six. I just think that movie is so bad and really cheesy. I guess it makes SOME sense because that movie is Roger fully as Bond but before the huge action set pieces of TSWLM and Moonraker. It's much more focused on Bond as a character rather than the overall story. Plus you've got the great Christopher Lee in it who elevates even the crappiest movies haha. Great video!

A big problem with TWINE is that it feels like it's trying to tell a more serious story with Elektra king [dealing with subjects like Stockholm Syndrome] but also has the cheesy lines and OTT action and the two tones noticeably clash. People latch on to Denise Richards because of how she's clearly not meant to be taken seriously [given her Lara Croft inspired outfit] so is the easiest thing to criticise which is unfair to Richards she lumbered with techno-jargon and her character is poorly written.

LaLD has its pacing issues, and Rosie IS one of the very worst Bond girls (pairing Mary Goodnight's idiocy and Stacy Sutton's shrill annoyingness), but its a mostly pretty solid entry in the series. The best description I've ever heard for why it works is that "it succeeds through sheer bravado". Compared to the cheap and mostly flacid Diamonds, LaLD goes big on everything and just pummels you with big performances, lots of color and music, and the longest action scene to date. But, to me, that makes it an exhausting film to watch. More of a Saturday afternoon movie than a chill evening-with-a-few-drinks staple. Golden Gun, despite being pretty stupid, moves quickly from one but to another, enjoying being weird and so LUSHLY 70s. It's all style, but a quieter kind, yet still much faster-paced than Moonraker. That puts it in the sweet spot for silly Moore outings. It's also a real trip of a film, with some of the craziest visuals; reminds me a bit of another classic film of the era: The Phantom of the Paradise. It's one of the Bond films i watch most often.

I love these look-back videos! My favorite Bond is also Moore, but Connery and Brosnan are very close behind. Not crazy about Lazenby and don't really enjoy Dalton, but the only Bond I just despise is Craig. I can watch any Bond film, except the Dalton ones, Connery's dull cash grab, Moore's last film and every Craig attempt, except CR. Love your work, great entertainment!

I agree with almost everything, except I think Dalton was better than Craig and I love A view To A Kill. I can't even watch the Craig films because the cinematography is too shaky and too many camera cuts

Hey James - Saw it last night - and I actually thought it was terrific! I think Gal Gadot was absolutely perfect and it is probably the best of all of Hollywoods attempts at creating a James Bond inspired female spy film. Hopefully we will see this spin off into a nice little Netflix franchise! It is definitely I think something most Bond fans will enjoy - and I would love to see Calvin’s take on it. Great timing too! Because since the SAG strike and WGA strike is still going on with no real end in sight - who knows when we will see the return of our hero…..
