I also felt that as a gay woman. I feel that "coming out" tends to be something you should fear, and fear the reaction of others, and making light of it helps it to be more of an everyday thing. I realize that not everyone feels this way, and I had negativr reactions to my coming out, so I know it aint always easy. I just wish that someday there wouldnt be a need to come out and everyone could just love whoever they want and be who they are without needing to express it to the world.

It’s a city with 2-3 universities and 1-2 colleges (depending if you count private schools or not) so a lot of people are fairly educated. And although it’s a political city, even our right wing party, the conservatives, have agreed (albeit not that long ago) that people should have the right to marry the same sex so it’s not even really a political issue anymore. Micro aggressions towards the LGBTQ+ community are still an issue though. I don’t think there’s too many people that are necessarily “homophobic” but still people that lack some understanding.

When I was 16 I became pregnant and my family turned me out and turned their backs on me. I was living in a car and just not in a good situation to raise a baby so I made the insanely difficult choice to put him up for adoption. Well, a few days ago SHE finally found me!!!! I couldn’t find her because I was searching for her birth name which of course was too much of a boy name and didn’t fit her now. She is beautiful!!!! I’ve always been an ally to the LGBT community but now I’m a proud mom of a trans girl. Unfortunately her parents haven’t been very understanding but she’s glad to know I’m in her corner. Yes! I barely want to go on the internet except to stream movies or tv shows because all I see is hateful/hurtful comments everywhere. It's really messed with my mental health and I just feel like there needs to be more compassion and thinking on the part of everyone. Like, yes this person could be wrong and hurtful, but that doesn't mean it's ok to be hurtful back. Educating someone who's ignorant is really important, but you also might need to do it many times for it to get through to them. Also, canceling someone isn't going to help. We should be having a respectful conversation with them to try to educate and understand where they're coming from as well. With only cancelling someone, we aren't able to do that because it's basically shutting them up. My whole undergrad degree was in Sociology and it was basically just being respectful, but trying to educate and learn about others and their experiences.

Taylor Alexis I honestly believe Cristine is either very limited in who she comes into contact with (and who she actually speaks to about this particular topic) or she’s giving the people around her credit they don’t deserve. Unfortunately, there are some nasty aspects of Ottawa too. I live a couple hours away, but I have family there and my son is going to the university of Ottawa in September. Like I said in another comment, we are definitely lightyears ahead of the US, but she’s unfortunately glorifying Ottawa a little bit. Just like every other big city, it has its issues too, and to pretend otherwise is naive. I love Cristine, but her privilege definitely allows her a different experience than most.

DJ exactly. She lives in one of, if not the, wealthiest areas of Ottawa, and works for the government, where of course people aren’t going to outwardly portray their hatred or ignorance for fear of being fired. It’s awesome that she grew up in an accepting family, but not everyone is that fortunate. She also doesn’t come from a religious background, like I do, where a lot of people use religion as an excuse to hate. BS about the Bible saying it’s a sin for man to lay with man and blah blah blah that I’ve heard my whole life from my aunt... in Ottawa.

As a person of LGBT+, I wasn't offended by the whole "Holosexual"' joke and found it rather entertaining and fun! However, listening to the way you explained it, I can see why someone would be offended. I'm glad I've learned something! Just because a joke doesn't offend you while being in a specific community doesn't mean it can't offend others in that community. I think that's something I personally need to learn, so thanks Cristine!

Honestly, as a pan trans man I think, “I’m coming out as a holosexual” was hilarious! And before anyone says that I only think this because I didn’t have a hard coming out experience, my grandpa told me that they should use the gays as moving targets and tried to shoot me.

I’m bisexual, I have literally NEVER thought that “holosexual” is offensive, I still don’t, because why should it be? Of course we can’t invalidate the people who are offended, but I don’t see a reason to be.
@paigegross80854 жыл бұрын
i never found the "holosexual" to be offensive. But i do remember when she "came out" and that did offput me. As someone who had a well... horrific time coming out, i thought the joke was kinda insensitive if not invalidating of my own experience. But as a straight person, she can never know what that feels like. So knowing it came from a place of good intentions and ignorance does make a difference, so we let it slide.
@fedupwithusernames4 жыл бұрын
Same, I'm bi and don't think "holosexual" is offensive. Using "coming out" as a holosexual in a title is more offensive tho imo because it's such insensitive clickbait.

Did you know that every animal species has gays and humans are the only ones that experience homophobia? Actually, for most animals, they are necisary because the straight animals are too busy having kids of their own to adopt so the gays are basically the only ones who adopt the orphans. Humans, get your shit together.
