Season 6B is absolutely confirmed as canon- Big Finish somewhat recently have started a series of audio adventures with post-War Games Troughton!
@CouncilofGeeks10 ай бұрын
See the thing is Big Finish is what I’d call “pseudo-canon.” It’s canon… but the show won’t adhere to it if something they want to do contradicts it. So it’s all canon until some of it’s not. And it could be made not at any time. Plus, they’ve literally remade some of Big Finish into the show.
@tommarsdon564410 ай бұрын
@@CouncilofGeekshonestly, I'd consider ALL of doctor who "pseudo canon". The BBC has no official stance on the subject. The show has contradicted itself many times even without considering extended media. Honestly, I don't get this obsession with canon many people have. Like, it's all fiction anyway. And when it has so many writers too. For example, RTD made a script back in like 1986 for the sixth doctor that never got used, until it was made into an audio story by big finish more than 3 decades later. How do you even think about that in relation to canon? In the end, I consider just about everything to be canon just because, well, why not? If it's fun and interesting and people put effort into making it, what's there to gain by taking it any less seriously? In the end, what difference does it's status of "canon" (or lack thereof) actually make?
@theoncomingstorm790310 ай бұрын
Doctor Who doesn't have a literary canon per say. It has no one authority capable of defining one in any meaningful way (The BBC do not own the Daleks for instance) and contradictions can pretty much always be explained by the rewriting of the timeline from things like the Time War. So what is actually 'canon' is really just 'whatever you personally accept to be part of the story'. And yeah the show can contradict the audios, but the show can and does also contradict itself. Waters of Mars doesn't make Ambassadors of Death "non-canon". Disclaimer: Am biased, wrote for one of the obscure niche DW-adjacent novel series. (Arcbeatle Press)

I'd love to see the mentioned video about why she once thought the doctor shouldn't ever be a woman, but I cannot find it. I certainly get being embarrassed about it and not wanting it out for bad faith actors to use as fuel, but I wouldn't judge - I'd just find Vera's "character arc" fascinating with this bit of backstory. Lately I've started to find myself able to take a sort of pride in the past things that I now condemn, because it shows how much I've grown. For a long time I wasn't growing at all. I had it all figured out, and _that_ guy sucked. It feels _great_ not to be that guy any more, but I wouldn't have this satisfaction without the journey. Love this multi-Council episode. It is really cool that you can regenerate. If you count the BBC episode guide as canon then 6B is cannon (see summary below). My understanding is that fans noticed discontinuities in 1969 and came up with theories then, that were later effectively confirmed in serials such as 'The Deadly Assassin' and 'The Two Doctors'. Note there is no reason for the Ruth Doctor to return to Troughton - she could just regenerate into Pertwee in Spearhead from Space and stumble out of the Tardis. I really hope this gets confirmed as it fits incredibly well, fills in gaps and does not require you to believe that the Doctor flew another Tardis pre-Hartnell, which just happened to be a police box. Moreover it separates Jo Martins' brilliantly executed performances with the brilliantly written mystery surrounding her character, from the Timeless child idea which flopped completely and did not go anywhere. I can accept the idea of the Timeless child's spirit haunting Lungbarrow and being reborn as the Doctor (I still don't think it adds anything to the Doctor, and demystifies Gallifrey further), but not the idea of pre-Hartnell Doctors - at least as long as the show leaves it open as a possibility that there is no such thing. tardis.fandom summarises the official BBC episode guide: "Rather than undergoing the regeneration shown starting at the end of The War Games, the Second Doctor was recruited to work for the Celestial Intervention Agency, a clandestine Time Lord organisation shown to exist in The Deadly Assassin. During this time, the Second Doctor regained Jamie and Victoria as companions, acquired a Stattenheim remote control device to summon his TARDIS and undertook an unknown number of missions, including that depicted in The Two Doctors. Eventually, the Doctor's association with the CIA ended for reasons not known and his full War Games sentence was executed at the beginning of Spearhead from Space."
@OmegaII10 ай бұрын
I was the thinking She would fit between 2 and 3 perfectly. The Time Lords forced the regeneration into Jo Martin she does covert ops, then retires and gets dumped on earth as Pertwee. It also explains the Tardis being a police box.

@@OmegaII Yes exactly - or maybe the regeneration is a delayed reaction to being turned into an Androgum.

@wajidmannan261810 ай бұрын
Troughton's trousers look more check to me, whilst Perteee stumbles out in greyish brown trousers. It may just be me not adjusting for the change to colour. Jo Martin's trousers are much darker than Pertwee's and her waistcoat is navy blue rather than black, so she would have had to change since the last time we saw her (or as you say been changed). I hope the similarity in Martin's and Troughton's style is at least an intentional nod from Chibnall (my understanding is that both he and RTD want to leave this open to viewer's headcanons). @@kylejones8289

4) The Gallifrey audio series is a legitimately good spinoff. Doubt that'd ever translate onto screen well though so I broadly still agree with this one. In general I still think the best implementation of Gallifrey's otherness is the Cartmel Masterplan (Ignore the Doctor-Other stuff I mean specifically Gallifrey). And yeah agree with young Doctor prequel, RTD shot that down for SJA for good reason (Although I must take a moment to mention that the Forgotten Lives series of charity anthologies is still far and away the best implementation of Pre-An Unearthly Child Doctor Who IMO). Jo Martin cannot fit in the Season 6B gap and if they tried to put her in there it'd be worse than the Timeless Child IMO. 3) So, Muldwych/Merlin from Battlefield is ginger according to the Virgin New Adventures. They are also supposed to be the very last incarnation of the Doctor. So... yay. I guess 2) I think Earthbound Doctor could work personally. 1) So yeah I agreed with this one. Still think precedent wise the Fourteenth Doctor was a bad idea since it opens the door to just like New Actor -> Matt Smith -> new Actor -> David Tennant again -> New Actor -> Paul McGann -> Matt Smith. etc which would be dull. The Curator was just super far future (Still is, Novelisation confirms Fourteen has no extra regens so he can't become Curator).
@Stephen-Fox10 ай бұрын
I think the funniest thing about the fact that it went earthbound for S7 (Terrance Dicks also apparently hated this it being Earthbound and only kept it that way for so long in respect to the prior production team) for budgetary reasons was it got an increase in budget for S7 due to the switch to colour production. The James Bond stuff was more that that was how Pertwee enjoyed playing the part (he genuinely adored his gadgets both on and off camera, apparently) than relating to it being Earthbound. Edited to fix the brain fart where I somehow confused Terrance Dicks for Terry Nation.

Few writers can cast their imaginations into a different societal arrangement. They only recreate the same situations they know with a sightly futuristic bent. The world of Star Trek is completely different than ours. Even without replicators, they can mine asteroids and lifeless world for resources. They would have incredible advanced 3-D printing. It's not our world. Short of channeling the spirit of Ursula K. Le Guin, I don't see them writing about it well.

Both their memories eventually wiped.

You know what I think would be an interesting concept to explore? Suppose the Doctor and _all_ other Gallifreyans were actually the same person across infinite timelines/incarnations/bigenerations but with finite memory that enables diverging personalities and values. It would certainly cement his _uniqueness_ in the universe. And yeah "bad idea" + "they did it really well" is simply not a contradiction.

I do agree with u about a possible way of resolving the bi-generation by merging the doctor back together causes it removes the permanency of it that is my biggest issue with it it worked in context of the episode but doesn’t on a permanent basis cause as much as I like the specials they did drop the ball in explaining why this face return they tried to with the doctor needs to stop running cause he has been running for such a long time but it fails cause it ignores his exile on earth and his time on Darillium with river
@Elwaves292510 ай бұрын
That's one of the things I picked up on, if the Doctor needs to stop running and Gatwa's Doctor is part of the solution, then it should really be Whittaker's Doctor that gets to stop. Thirteen would have far more issues than Ten, just because they were around longer. I know people have their fan theories but I didn't see a definitive in-show reason for it being Ten's face (let's face it, it was Ten all over but with more memories). There's also my pet peeve of no in-universe explanation for the clothes changing during regen. His real world reason was well meaning but incredibly weak IMO. What it really comes down to is not Ten not wanting to go but RTD not wanting to let Tennant go.

I'm about to write a full essay on the points you made on this video, so I'm sorry for the length lmao. I personally love the Timeless Child, and the Doctor _being_ the Timeless Child, I just hate the execution. We're only just starting to see the emotional impact it's had on the Doctor (it's one thing for them to suppress their emotions during the Flux, maybe even during the initial discovery, but we barely saw any Timeless Child-related trauma during that in-between period). Then there's the whole Jo Martin thing where she's, for some reason, still calling herself the Doctor and the TARDIS is still a police box? Season 6B has only recently grown on me, but I'm still back and forth on it (especially if we replace the Extended Universe 6B content with Jo Martin's Doctor - I love Jo Martin, but I also love TwoJamie, so it's difficult to decide which I'd prefer). If the initial setup had actually delivered a poignant emotional gut-punch then I think a lot of the haters (no shade, we all have our own opinions and this is what fanfics are for lmao) would be less resistant to it. But it was clearly rushed, the reveal felt more like it was there for the sake of it rather than holding actual plot relevance, and the "emotional" writing was iffy at best. I think it could work as a reason for the Doctor's seemingly impossible survivability and why their existence seems so integral to the universe's existence, as seen in the Wedding of River Song. They don't have to be some all-powerful being - just by nature of _living_ long enough as a slightly-better-than-human, they can still change a lot. (Also it would offer an explanation for when the Doctor inevitably reaches their next 13th Regeneration without having to recycle the Trenzalore plotline.) This all ties back to your point on the mystery of Gallifrey by the way: I fully agree that every time Gallifrey comes on screen, it just becomes more and more like a slightly-to-the-left Earth. Even in the End of Time with the Seer (I forget her actual name) - when did magic come in? Didn't Gallifrey banish the Sisterhood of Karn because of their magic schtick? Why couldn't we have a super advanced sci-fi reason for the predictions, such as with the Sliders and the Cloisters? Then the Barn, which, like you said, why is it made out of Earth wood? Why does everyone dress like Earth farmers from the 1900s? Even if they were meant to be lower-class farmers of a sort, could there not have been some sci-fi, Gallifreyan-reds-and-oranges farmer clothes? I also think that Tennant _should not_ have returned. He _had_ an ending. It wasn't a happy ending, but neither was Pertwee's, or Davison's, or really any of the Classic Doctors'; even Capaldi's ending could be argued to be a particularly sad one. And we'd already moved on. Doctor Who is a show about change, about letting go and moving forward, and we can't have that if a Doctor from 15 years ago comes back and suddenly gets a super happy ending that comes out of left field. By this point, what was the reason behind "Things end, and that's always sad, but things begin again too, and that's always happy"? What about Matt Smith's and Capaldi's Regeneration speeches? Are those meaningless now? (Then the Bigeneration, which is a whole other thing.) Basically, Tennant coming back goes against the whole essence of Regeneration and the emotions it's meant to invoke, it made Ncuti's entrance be overshadowed by Tennant (I'm not talking about their performances - Ncuti's performance in The Giggle was incredible and he was somehow even better in Ruby Road), and was completely unnecessary. I wouldn't have had as much of an issue if he'd actually Regenerated during The Giggle (since he was ready to go this time), but then the Bigeneration happened, which... yeah. My opinion on the "therapy-out-of-order" was that it was less _therapy_ and more of a break. It would take centuries for the Doctor to properly work through their trauma and they have less than one with the Mott-Temple-Nobles, I'm thinking it's another Darillium situation - they settle down and have a break, maybe talk through a few things, but their overall trauma is still there when they become 15.

Regarding 6b, Terrance Dicks had the idea that the 2nd Doctor worked for the Galifreyan CIA between War Games and Spearhead. Several of his original novels are based in this period and the Two Doctors seems to fit right in. Not sure if considered canon but published by bbc books and written by uncle Terrance is near as dammit.

I seem to imagine 14 "regenerating" in a way similar to Odin's death in Thor: Ragnarok (his consciousness would end up back at the moment of bi-generation).

Idk if you ever talk about theories, but what do you think of the theory of 14 becoming The Valeyard down the line, presumably once the Nobles have all gone.
@jackaylward-williams906410 ай бұрын
My theory now is that 14 eventually regenerates into Jo Martin, and the reason that she didn’t remember 13’s face was that the bigeneration divided The Doctor’s memories between 14 and 15, with the two of them wearing different parts of 14’s outfit being a visual metaphor for it and 15’s line about “doing rehab out of order” being an indication that 14 got all the traumatic memories that he now has to work through whilst living on Earth.
@KingMidgardsormr10 ай бұрын
oh my god I would hate this so much... like no offense to your theory but bi-generation is easily the thing I hate the most in doctor who. I'd take the timeless child over bi-generation any day.
@gnomesaiyan168010 ай бұрын
I wouldn't mind 14 becoming Martin, but the reason she doesn't "remember" 13 is simply because The Doctor Lies. Letting 13 know that BiGeneration exists would be spoilers.
@theoncomingstorm790310 ай бұрын
Fourteen has no regens. Says so in the novelisation. Dialogue also says Fifteen is older than Fourteen. Also Martin worked for Division in the Dark Times in Gallifrey's distant past and that makes no sense if she's Fourteen. Also she was unaware Gallifrey was destroyed. Also this breaks the authorial intent for no good reason.
@jackaylward-williams906410 ай бұрын
Did we ever definitively establish that it was The Fugitive Doctor that worked for The Division though? We saw Jo Martin in flashbacks during Flux, but it was pretty firmly established that the The Doctor was misremembering certain details, as evidenced by the fact that it’s initially Jodie Whittaker in the flashbacks, and she clearly jumped to the conclusion that The Fugitive Doctor was a pre-Hartnell incarnation after finding out that she was The Timeless Child, so it would make perfect sense for her to remember having that face when she worked for The Division if that’s what she thought was the case. Also, there’s plenty of precedent for breaking authorial intent for no reason in Doctor Who, the prime example being the aforementioned Timeless Child reveal.
@theoncomingstorm790310 ай бұрын
Yeah it was, in Fugitive of the Judoon she was explicitly running from Division. I do appreciate the creativity (as opposed to 'yet another S6B theory') but still, Fugitive is pre-Hartnell. The Origins Comic all but says it and even ignoring that is the obvious conclusion. If RTD isn't retconning TTC why bother to change that? (I do have a theory involving bootstraps and whatnot that explains that Fugitive got the name 'Doctor' from Thirteen via biodata shenanigans but that's neither here nor there and also doesn't affect the Fugitive Doctor's placement)

Here's something Doctor Who should never do imo: Never confirm Fugtive Doctor is pre hartnell.
@Tuaron10 ай бұрын
Can't say I disagree with the principles outlined or the reasoning, nor the response to the 1 they did actually do: I was also quite wary of the decision to have the Doctor regenerate back into a previous incarnation (it's rather different than simply bringing a past Doctor back for a crossover, like the 50th), but I do think it was generally handled well (I don't like the ending, it doesn't sit well with me, and there are some other minor nitpicks). The Doctor being stuck on Earth *could* work, but I agree that there's little that could be done with that as a plotline that couldn't really be explored another way: doing it for a single episode or two-parter, sure, but not so much for a full season. I also agree about the Gallifrey spinoff, though I don't have the same complaints, probably as I'm not really exposed to Classic Who. To me, the idea of a Gallifreyan underclass makes a level of sense, highlighting how much the Timelords are putting up more of a front to suggest they're thoroughly advanced and fairly utopian, but are really not. That said, the comparison to Krypton highlights my concerns about the idea of a spinoff: it could be done well (a Game of Thrones/House of Cards/Succession-style look at the politics of Gallifrey might work) but it's such a tight needle to thread that it's not worth the risk, especially not as a Krypton (or Caprica) style prequel that also tries to setup this big character without featuring them or, like Gotham, pushes them far too far to make sense as a prequel to the Doctor we know. I don't mind the idea of the Doctor "being ginger", especially as that running joke stopped running, but I can understand the thoughts/feelings that motivated that choice at that time.

Why did you refer to your past self as he? Also I'm surprised Jodie was already cast when you still looked like that. I didn't realize how recent of a change this was. Anyway... I still think they should bring back past Doctors to do a full series but limit it to Doctors who never even really had a full series to begin with like Paul McGann and Jo Martain. I had previously included John Hurt in that list but then he past away so maybe get someone who can pass as a young John Hurt to play the same incarnation in the style of David Bradly's 1st Doctor. My personal theory is that David Tennant's Doctor will become the Watcher and go back in time to trigger the 4th Doctor's regeneration into the 5th because Bi-Generation is kind of the 4th Doctor's regeneration but in reverse and that would complete the loop rather than continue to have 2 Doctors runnning around at the same time. The one thing I think Doctor Who should never do is make the Timeless Child offically canon. You might argue it already is but the Doctor still hasn't opened the watch containing their lost memories so there's still a chance that the Timeless Child is not what we think. I want the Master to be the Timeless Child cause it would explain how he keeps comming back even though the Master was suppose to have died with no chance of regeneration multiple times. Jo Martain, I love her as a Doctor who could have existed between 2 and 3 but if they ever offical confirm her as a Pre-Hartnel Doctor that would ruin the show. There should never be any Pre-Hartnel Doctors, especially not one with a TARDIS because we know, it's been established that Hartnel's Doctor is the one who stole the TARDIS and it didn't get stuck as a police box till An Unearthly Child so even if you do make Pre-Hertnel Doctors a thing they can't have that TARDIS. Continuity would just be an unsalvagable mess if Jo Martin was ever offically confirmed Pre-Hartnel. I love her as the Doctor I just don't agree with the placement of her incarnation. Please be between 2 and 3, that's the place where she makes the most logical sense. My opinion on the Specials BTW... Star Beast was terrible. It was fine up till the ending where a lot of unnessicary dialog could have been cut out, and it's dialog that both makes no sense and instantly made me hate the character of Rose Noble. All they needed was "It was too much for one person but you had a child." And left it at that but then it keeps going to over explain things that didn't need to be explained. Rose basically shits on the Doctor for being male presenting and at the same time why did Donna never think of it herself, why did the 13th Doctor never think of it? You going to shit on the 10th Doctor for being male but the Women never thought of it either. And "just choose to let it go" is such a dumb solution to a problem, that's what a male could never think of? Really? If that was an option the entire time Donna would have already done it! Not only does Rose basically shit on the only other Trans character in the show cause the Doctor is technically trans now, but the show also implies that she's only trans because the Doctor is, like if Donna had never met the Doctor she's still be Jason and that's not really the message you want to sent, that trans people don't natually just exist but that's what the Star Beast implied with the way it chose to portray Rose being trans as just a concequence of inhereting the Doctor's meta crisis energy. Wild Blue Yonder felt really similar to other episodes I've seen before. Like I'm pretty sure the robot was reused from another episode. I think the alien astronaunt floating outside was something I seen before. The entire episode just felt familiar like I'd already seen it. It was also really cheap considering there were only 3 actors in the entire episode, a few extras in the background but it seems like a bit of a wimper for the last appearance of Wilfred Mot. Also the previous episode included a joke about how Wilfred was thought to be dead only for the Doctor to have misunderstood the situation. Given the actor really did die after filming this why did they make a joke about his death? The Giggle was mostly the best episode of the 3 specials except again it was very clear they did not have a lot of footage of Wilfred as we don't even see him in the Giggle and they constantly have him just off screen out of view. I wish the ending of Wild Blue Yonder had been included at the beginning of the Giggle as that way his one and only scene in the specials could actually be viewed in the best of the 3 specials. So hated Star Beast, was bored for Wild Blue Yonder, and LOVED the Giggle. Star Beast could be salvaged with just a few lines of dialog removed from the script. The Giggle could be improved by adding the ending of Wild Blue Yonder to the start of the episode. And Wild Blue Yonder is just absolutly pointless, it's skippable save for one scene at the end. This also didn't really feel like a 60th Anniversay special at all. Just felt like standard Doctor Who. Jodie's finnal episode felt more like an Aniversary special with all the returning Doctors that's how you celebrate an aniversary. This was just the 10 and Donna show for 3 episodes. There wasn't much of a celebration of the 60 years of Doctor Who in there. I was expecting returning Doctors for the special cause we got that with the 50th.

Answering your starting question: it's because I'm fairly disconnected from that part of my life and also reflective of my journey. I know that for many trans people they have the perspective of "I always kind of knew I wasn't my assigned gender" but for me it was a hell of a lot more gradual than that. I don't do it on purpose, but yeah when I see my old self I tend to think of that person as "him." That's just me though. The rule of thumb across the board is refer to trans people by their current preferred pronouns no matter what point in their lives you're talking about. And honestly I'd probably feel weird if anybody else called even an older version of me "he." And yet I do it to myself. I dunno, it's a thing I guess.
