The "you aren't a real photographer" statement reminds me of a time when I took pictures for my OHSET team just for fun but it took up so much of my time that I did charge for pics since I took over 10k for every meet. A guy asked me for the pics I took of him cause he saw some that I posted on my insta and he said that he really liked them, and when I asked for the money, he just laughed and said that he can get better pics on his phone. I deleted any and all pics I had of him and refused to take pics of him the rest of the year. I was petty and he can suck something.

All of the people in the comments justifying them slapping corny filters or face tuning photos they get from a photographer. You see the photographer’s work on social media. You know what their work looks like and what to expect. They probably have a specific editing style. So if you don’t like their editing style, why are you wasting a photographer’s time? Make it make sense.

I've always appreciated receiving unedited pics from photographers, so I could let them know which ones I wanted edited. I've had photographers send me a ton of pics, and then asking me to only use the ones titled 'edited nr x'. The rest was just for private use, if I liked them. I would never post unedited pictures if a photographer asks me not to, nor would I disrespect them by editing their pictures myself. If I want a different edit, I can ask them to do it, or if they're ok with it to let someone else do it. Respect is so important!

Okay, I do see where you're coming from. I, however, have been in a situation where my photographer completely changed my entire nose (even though he knew what I looked like before, I looked like a completely different person in the pictures). It really messed with my confidence for a while, since I've always been struggling with my nose. He refused to re-edit my pictures. So, it really sucks to be on the other side as well sometimes.

I know I'm late to this comment section but here's my experience. We chose a photographer for our wedding BECAUSE of their displayed work. The style of colors were very similar to an overexposed portra 400, so very gentle and pastel and that's what I asked of him. After the wedding we got the photos and they were horrible. Most of them were orange and oversaturated, our skin looked off and very rough and every blemish was the focus of it. Many more had this leap in dynamic range where people were very underexposed and some blown to white. I asked the photographer for all the raw files and thankfully since I'm a photographer and he has seen my work he agreed to it. I spend probably 2 straight weeks editing, dodging, burning and cropping with almost no sleep. After everything was done I created a separate flickr profile where I uploaded them all and send them to each guest via DM's. There were some really good photos that gave me the flexibility to make them amazing, so the photography was there, but I don't know what happened with the editing part on his end...

I've never been in a photographer or have hired a photographer, but I just can't understand why someone would want an unedited version of picture to post on their socials? Wasn't the point of getting professional pictures to get some sort of quality retouch? Why would you want the raw ones lol? Like if I was in that situation and I didn't like the way a photo turned out, I would want to work with the photographer to express what I am hoping for from the retouch. Idk - maybe I'm just out of the loop haha.

I told a dude who approached me in a pretty threatening manner, that I was taking pictures for my mother who was going to be arriving on a train at a later date and was scared so she wanted to see what the train station looked like. I genuinely thought he was gonna try to grab my camera but he bought the mom story.

It’s much less of an issue if your shoot for the day is ruined than it would have been if something was actually going on and she saw it and decided not to report it. It was done with good intentions, there are creepy men out there taking advantage of young girls, so the lady did the right thing. I’m sure it does suck for the poor photographer and the models though!

My flatmate and I went to a flower farm. I took my camera, found the locations in which I wanted my photo taken, made sure to test the light etc, set up all the settings on the camera. Gave my camera to my flatmate and asked that she just press the button on my camera to take the photo. I posed myself, checked photos and then adjusted poses. When we got home I uploaded the photos, edited them with my presets, cropped them because girl the photos were not straight. Flatmate then took the photos , uploaded them on her FB , IG and said that this was her photography work (leading to people offering her paid work). Girl, all you did was press a button. Lesson learnt, i'm investing in a better tripod and will use self-timer in the future.

Photographers, artists, designers, LISTEN UP WHEN I SAY THIS. Please, for the sake of your own sanity, if any of your clients ask for edited verison of the image, and its a situation you need to send them to see or check, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, send it back with ALOT of watermarks on it or a huge watermark on it. You know those "sample" pictures you see everywhere? DO THAT. Once everything is finalized, only then, do you send the retouched and done files to the cilents. And if there is anything they do not like the way your retouch it, WORK THINGS OUT WITH THEM.

About 13 years ago I was collaborating with a then-budding fashion photographer for a unique "painting with fire" photoshoot. She got images from this shoot published in a UK fashion magazine. We had a fair-sized crew; Three models, people for hair and makeup, a wardrobe stylist, tiki torches, fire extinguishers for safety, and the two of us photographers, all at the photoshoot location in a local park. Because of the nature of the shoot we needed darkness, so we were there from about 3:30am until around 5:30am. Just as we were wrapping up we saw headlights from a car parking near our cars. As the sun was just starting to rise, we could now see it was a police car. We were met partway up the hill to the cars by a police officer. He told us that they'd received a complaint from a couple of old ladies jogging through the park. Something about "odd witchcraft activities". We showed the officer some of the photos on the back of our cameras. He laughed and started back to his car but one of our models, from Brazil, wanted to get a picture with the officer. He graciously obliged, and we all had a good laugh from this experience!

Sitting by a fishing pond where I took a lovely impressionist type photo in the fog 25 years ago. There were a couple of old row boats on shore. They were still there. I hear a door slam and a big guy with a loud huffy 'tude comes running down the hill. "I'm so tired of you photographers making money off of my property!". I'm totally stunned, we're in the middle of nowhere, and only locals even know this little pond. I explained I'd never sold a photo in my life, and even if I wanted to buy one I could do it online for less than $5 from a stock site. Not worth the trouble - his idea that photographers were getting rich taking pics were way overblown. I also shot events back in the day. Made the mistake of letting people see the pics before I'd weeded then out. Then potential customers would always want the shots that didn't make the cut. I quickly learned to shoot just for myself. The exception are car shows ... they always gain me an avid follower or two.

I don't think it's ok to re-edit a phtoographers photos without permission, but at the same time, I feel one or part of the reason people do it is because lots of photographers focus too much on which shots best display their photography skills with lighting etc but those shots aren't always the most flattering of the model. Oh god, I saw the title this and immediately thought of my time at John Casablanca’s. It was my first real photo shoot for our portfolios& it was outside in the early morning and when it was my turn the sun had come into the set in a way that it was literally directly in my eyes. at the time I didn’t know but I know now that a medication I was on was making my already light sensitive eyes even more light sensitive, no matter what I did I could not open them, my face was straining and I had tears running down from trying so hard to keep my eyes open during the shot and where we were at the time felt like I was just staring right into the sun. I was in pain. The photographer and our coach were upset at the faces I was making saying Relax until finally the photographer gave in and was nice even to tell me to keep them closed until he said he was taking the photo. He would say look down then up and I got through finally. But a couple weeks after I left. I still have no idea how those photos turned out. But I’ve used that tip ever since and it’s worked out great so far. Lol

I would love to see you do a reaction video to "Exposing Victorian Influencers Who 'Facetuned' Their Photos" by Bernadette Banner. I doubt the average person gives much thought to the history of photo manipulation. People often take early photographs at face value. This, of course, can lead to a lot of misconceptions. On a side note: I'm a recent subscriber and have been playing catch up on your videos. Just saw your reaction to "How to have a free wedding". Thanks to Charlotte Dobre I've become aware of the trend of asking for free services (particularly "paying" in exposure). Most of these videos come with an "Entitled" label. As a supervisor in a thrift store I also come across the attitude of customers wanting something for little to nothing. Too often I hear "But YOU get it for FREE!" As a not-for-profit we rely heavily on donations. This, however, does not change the intrinsic value of the items. Nor does it change the fact that none of our workers are volunteers. We still pay our donation attendants, drivers, sorters, hangers, taggers, pricers, rollers, utility workers, recyclers, cashiers, and management. We also have to pay for the lease, electricity, water, trash pickup, etc. Our profits go toward helping disabled Vets obtain the medical treatment they need (mental as well as physical). This includes programs that help our Vets find work and readjust to civilian life. There. I've ranted my rant. FYI: If I ever decide to have a wedding I will happily pay you to play BTS the entire time (this includes travel, a nice hotel, & the same options for a meal as everyone else at the reception).

I have to completely disagree on the point that a person, especially a client can’t upload filtered photos that have been taken by a photographer . I can’t tell you the amount of times when I didn’t like the edits that a photographer has done because they don’t have the feel or the style that I was going for and I had to try editing them myself on my phone. Also filters give a very specific vibe to the photo that currently is in style. People like the way photos look when they have been put trough filters or have been facetooned. I don’t understand why that’s such a bad thing. Also if I pay a lot of money for a photoshoot I would like to have all the photos regardless if they are edited or not and I want the Raw files because I would like to be able to used them however I want whit out being constricted.
@jennacarney80122 жыл бұрын
Nah sis. You know what the photographer’s work looks like, you see their social media and you know what to expect. So if that photographer doesn’t edit in the style that you like….don’t shoot with them. Especially if you’re going to take their images and slap a cheesy filter on it. That’s a waste of their time and yours and also just super disrespectful

And I still stand by my opinion that when you’re a client and you have paid for a service you are supposed to receive what you paid for. I genuinely mean no hate and I do believe that professional editing looks better however if that’s not what your client wanted then you should just let them be and give them the RAW files. And if you really really don’t want to give them the RAW files just send them good enough jpgs.

@@jennacarney8012 In one tv series that we did we wanted to create an influencer instagram page for one of the characters, meaning we had to do multiple photoshoots. We hired a photographer that mainly worked with instagram models and the work that he showed us was exactly what we wanted. But when we received his edits everything looked editorial non of the edits fitted with the persona of the character. We had to re-edit almost everything and he refused to give us the RAW files so that we can more easily do the new edit… I understand that sometimes there is a collaborative work in photoshoots between photographer and model or photographer and creative director and in these cases the photographer will be absolutely in their right to refuse giving files or arguing about the edit style but if I hire you to take photos of my wedding for example if I don’t like the photos I am absolutely in my right to do as I please with them.
