Not only was the maid involved in the hotel robbery but she clearly went through his luggage and bags. He stated that he did not unpack his camera and gear up until that point, so it looks like the maid cleans the rooms and pillages through luggage, if anything is big where she can’t steal it herself she probably lets family members know or whomever. This is why I never have maids clean my room when I’m on vacation which admittedly is hardly ever. But whenever I do go somewhere I just don’t trust anyone coming into the room where they can just look through stuff and steal whatever they want, there is literally zero chance of them getting caught - by the time you realize some thing is stolen the item is long gone, hid and put away. There are no cameras in the room so it’s literally just speculation there is no way to prove it. This is in no way a slight towards maids, there are way more honest maids than bad… I just don’t want to take the chance on getting a bad one.

Me and my mom usually stuff our bags so they can't touch anything ours. And if a huge backpack is gone: firstly it's heavy, secondly it's big, thirdly my backpack is bright blue so it's very unmistakable. And we don't usually have anything valuable on us. Maybe some earrings and moisturizer or cables but nothing more.

Whew relate too closely to the maid story... Feel that person's pain 100%. I had $30K of gear (and that''s not the worst part) stolen in October of 2020... Gear is one thing, but I lost all of my work... Was moving homes & offices at the same time, so had backups, backups of backups, and _all_ of my work with me... Lost every image, video, music/audio project, and more I'd ever created... Client deliverables were saved in cloud storage but at the time, couldn't afford to backup the ~100TB of data in the cloud... Actually, I finally could after recovering from COVID-related financial losses, and that's what my plans for the next day were. Was gonna spend the whole day backing everything up. Wish I would've done it that day. Then, in February this year, had some racist pos target my girl & I while we were hiking because we're a mixed-race couple... Nearly knocked me to the ground and in the process, snapped the strap off of my 1DX II with a 70-200 attached, and smashed into the rocks... Yelled some slurs at us then took off. I need a break. 💀

One of the scariest parts of being a photographer is knowing at any second, how many thousands of dollars can get flushed down the drain. A dropped lens, a cable pulling a laptop off a desk, a theft, and poof, you are down 20k.

It's about time that high-end cameras had some security on them, like phones. Fingerprint/Iris/facial recognition on a weekly basis, coupled with a login, otherwise the camera becomes a brick. Not ideal, but something could and should be done. The technology is cheap and available

In my country, there's been a series of theft at wildlife workshops (and in some cases landscape). It seems the thieves targeted specifically some national parks/reserves that were well known to have lots of workshops (advertise easily in their website). Poor guys who got robbed of their 300/400mm lenses which they have saved money for years. I'd be devasted after something like this, I mean you're not going to buy a new 6000 euro lens that soon with an Italian salary.

I find it interesting that none of the people who shot weddings mentioned a contract. Every shoot I do, weddings, seniors, models, etc., has a contract, model release or whatever I need for legal and liability purposes. My wedding contracts list the number of people in the wedding party, bridesmaids, groomsmen, guests, times, locations, etc. If the groom was going to give me a ride that would be included in the contract. I've never, and would never, shoot any wedding or anything without a contract. So, my advice to any newcomers to photography, get a contract, PPA has examples on their website. Adjust it to fit your needs, maybe run it past a local attorney and your good to go. Never shoot anything without a signed contract stipulating what, when, where, and how, and the amount you will be paid and when you will be paid. Remember after a wedding you're just another bill. And unless I'm traveling cross country for a shoot, I scout out the location to see what I'll be running into during the event, or wedding, etc.

I DO agree with you that the thieves clearly knew that there was 20 grand worth of valuable camera equipment in that hotel room. Whether they were watching this guy and saw him bring it all in, or the maid tipped them off or something. They knew EXACTLY which room to hit, and where the stuff was....because the guy claims he had not unpacked yet when it was taken. And then HOW did they get away without someone catching them, in a room that is clearly not theirs, walking out with 20 grand worth of stuff? Aren't there security cameras? I would be furious, if it were me. AND they also took his passport.

Thieves don't generally have an interest in photography, but the items are easily resold for a huge profit. Often times stolen goods like photography equipment, musical instruments, that stuff ends up in pawn shops or sold on craigslist, eBay, etc.

I don't know why this video was sent my way, since I have been knocking your ANTM videos. I was on the bus once, when I realized my camera case was left behind. Got off the bus, ran back and thank heaven it was still there! That camera gear was arm and leg, period!! So, if I had to choose between a air flight and my then camera gear, there's always another flight. Screw the TAS! I would never own $20,000 worth of camera, lenses, filters, speedlghts, lighting gear and computer stuff. Every loser and their brother and sister would try to steal it. Especially like that film crew who were filming in the Bay Area. When some trash pistol wrapped and robbed them. You'll need a navy seal team to guard you. If you have to defend yourself, better to be judge by 12, than carried by six.

I have a pet peeve, it bugs the crap out of me when people confuse robbery and burglary. If anyone is interested: robbery is taking stuff from someone by force or fear, and burglary is when you enter someone's property with intent to steal something or commit another crime.

My photography horror story happened last Saturday. Let's preface: I have Aspergers. And it makes confrontation hard, very hard. Basically when you call someone out for doing something wrong a normal person would say: "Oh sorry, didn't mean to do anything wrong." but instead I get a panic attack because I wasn't trying to do anything wrong but I apparently did. And this is the case for me. So I went to France for a couple of days since we had also a public holiday on the 25th. I went to Nice and Rocquebrune/Menton on the French Riviera. Literally 3 hours away from home. Pretty close I'd say. And in Nice we decided to visit a few museums. I got in fine, free ticket and all (I'm a student of university of design in Genoa) and for the most part I left almost all at the entrance. You know the big stuff and umbrellas. At the museum of modern arts there was nothing written about carrying bags so I just left my umbrella there and went. They checked my black dust bag and saw that I had my brand new expense (a cheap tripod I bought for fun) and they said nothing about it. So I went in started looking and then propped up my tripod to take some photos of the room since it was very big. Later down the visit a guard approached me as I was setting my tripod again and told me to remove it immediately. I freaked out hoping my mom didn't see me. I put it back in it's bag and continued the visit having and anxiety attack. The same guard approached me later and told me I can still take photos with my phone. But no tanks. I have an anxiety attack. I don't care anymore. I think the reason behind is that: A. It can be dangerous and you can hit someone/any artwork with a tripod. B. They might think you're taking photos to sell or it's unauthorized in a way. Because museums have personnel there for this reason: to take promo photos. Or maybe it's because they think I'm going to post them illegally and get any form of compensation for it. Btw the video/photos were for me and me only. I didn't plan on even posting them.
