Timo Tolkki - love it how he can express quite complex topics easy to grasp. Human beings and life are in a way quite simple - if one sees through the mist

idk... watching/hearing anything from Dream Theater after Train of Thought feels like having an old friend who shows you his "new Song" that he made and you really want to like it, because you like him. But deep inside you are like "meh... it's okay I guess, nothing special though". Here and there they still have some amazing songs and solos but overall with every album they stick to much to their "DT Formula". It's always the same intro, same "switch up" for the first verse lyrics then the same switch up for the second verse, some fast soloing aaand the song's done... It's still "good music", but all the new stuff they've released within the last years is simply not the music why I listened to them in the first place.

I think they have become prog metal manufacturers than prog metal artists. Which is fine. They have chosen to make money by manufacturing good signature products and have a sustainable career. Economically this is sensible. But the artistic aspect may have suffered for some or many fans.

I feel Jarkko is let down by his own high expectations. Dream Theater has many different kinss of songs. This is for them a more straightforward metal song in the vein of their albums released in the 2000s like Six Degrees, Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos.

We all have our standards and expectations. :)

@JarkkoLunnas I followed the entire conversation. Frankly speaking, I don't think the current lineup of Dream Theater is going to satisfy your expectations as far as emotional connection is concerned. Kevin Moore was really the master of that. Like Timo mentioned in the discussion the song Space Dye Vest from the Awake album, a song which ia entirely Kevin's creation. I think that ship has sailed and not coming back. Even Falling into Infinity had some great emotional songs. After that things have changed. There have been emotio-rich songs of course, but with Rudeas and the new direction of the band, they are less frequent and not the same quality. So to sum up, you will probably not get what you want.

@@ArnHaz One can always hope, right ;) It's not about Moore, or "back to the Images roots", which would be unrealistic. My expectation/hope would be something along the lines the more mature creations from Six Degrees album such as The Great Debate and the sense of style throughout on Falling Into Infinity - those are still unmatched works in my books. There were also still some more metal songs that had still some creative metal energy going on there e.g. on 6 Degrees, and also occasionally on some of the later albums, so it's not that either. =)

Interesting video but don't stop the song to discuss about it. Listen the song first and discuss about it after it's finished. That's really annoying. Just like commercials cutting video in pieces.
