I had just so happened to have read Chaos right before I watched it. Glad I did. I didn't know anything about Manson and the Tate murder before that. I'd recommend reading it. It's such a deep and dark story.

my favourite tidbit surrounding this movie is that sharon tates sister saw it in theatre's and said that she was so happy to have a story about sharon that wasn't completely defined by her murder and it felt like a breath of fresh air to just watch her have fun and live life on screen, margot did such an incredible job

fun fact, this movie is a huge memory piece for Tarantino, because he was like 6 or 7 in 1969, and he told in an interview that his stepdad used to drive him around LA when he was little, so not only the Brad Pitt driving sequences are inspired by that, but also the reason he's often framed from below and from the POV of the passenger seat is because it was the height of 7 yo Quentin looking at his stepdad driving, which I think is really wholesome.

Mind that according to Tarantino, Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Frykowski and Steven Parent, get to live that night, thanks to Cliff and Rick. Thus implying that when Rick Dalton is invited inside the Polanski residence (being a wish of Rick mentioned early in the movie) it opens up an opportunity for Rick to continue his movie career, being well connected to Polanski, and thus continue his partnership with Cliff.

I think it was more of an 'revenge fantasy' for Tarantino and the rest of us (people like me) that lived in the LA area at the time, and watched the 3 girls from both nights laughing & singing, etc everyday on their way to court. Seeing all 5 of them(3 girls, Tex and manson) get the death penalty in the gas chamber, only to have CA overturn using the death penalty in 1972, and they all got to live long lives in prison(3 still alive as I type this) Tex Watson, believe it or not fathered 4 children while in prison.

And you don’t need to have been alive during the time; just need a sense of curiosity about the Manson Family and read a little bit about them and their actions. @@Divamarja_CA Quite so, I have met younger people even here in Europe who see the Manson "family" as a sort of case study and I do not think it is any less important to see them that way. Yes the redhead having her John Hinckley Jr. moment, some people need to "make sure" the world sees them to feel they are "someone"...But the whole event was so powerful my country was under a dictatorship and news were "filtered" but this had a very deep impact.

But I grew up learning about this, the LoBianco murders that the Manson family did very shortly thereafter. What is really eerie watching the Spahn movie ranch scenes is the fact that a stuntman was killed there. His name was Donald "Shorty" Shea. Manson himself was convicted of killing him along with Clem Grogan, and Bruce M. Davis. In this movie Clem was the guy that ruined the tire. The guy who played Tex was the same actor that played Elvis in the latest movie, Elvis. Squeaky "Red" was the same person that attempted to kill President Ford.

It was a huge shared experience, with the music/videos becoming commone touchstones in the culture that people shared & talked about. For those of us who lived through it, it's still a big thing that we share & understand.

You really have to know the history of Charles Manson and the Manson murders to really understand the timeline of this movie. You will then really appreciate Quentin Tarantino’s alternative ending. Watching the various documentaries on Charles Mason is extremely interesting if you are not familiar with the Span Movie Ranch, Roman Polanski, Helter Skelter, Tex Watson, Tate/LaBianca murders and the many controversies associated with Manson.

When Leo commented on the flamethrowers heat he was being serious and they kept it in the movie! Also Sharon Tate's family was completely opposed to having a movie including her and how she died but Tarantino told them what it was gonna be about and they got on board! Also also a lot of the stores that got dressed up with the 60's aesthetic during the driving scenes kept the décor after shooting!. Also also also yes we get a foot shot from Margot cuz it's a Tarantino flick but there is cause for this in this movie! Sharon Tate was known to dislike wearing shoes and would try not to whenever she could! Thus why we see her feet dirty and why she has no shoes in the theater! Also also also also Brad Pitt improvised the like "You're Rick fuckin' Dalton" because he had a friend say that to him once early in his career! Also also also also also the actor for Charles Manson in this also plays him in Mindhunter! Also also also also also also Maya Hawkes character is based on Linda Kasabian who was Manson family member who provided testimony against them and even stopped another murder that was going to happen that night!

tarantino wrote a novel version of the film and expands on a bunch of stuff that is only touched on like what really happened to Cliff's wife, rick's propensity for temper tantrums. also the little girl has a much larger role. and Tarantino actually reveals what happens to Cliff and Rick after their clash with the manson girls

What I like about this movie is the attention to, and accuracy of the ephemera of the time period. I can vouch the movie captures the sound and feel of the time period, my high school years. The little details, like seeing Mama Cass at the party and hearing the top forty AM stations on the car radios really has the movie oozing realism. I have a cassette collection of air checks of old radio stations and the KHJ jingles heard in the movie are authentic.

It's what makes this portrayal of Sharon so lovable and the final carnage sequence so exquisitely satisfying. Tarantino also included tons of references for people who remember old TV and movies from the 50s-70s.

This movie is one big 11/10/ The only Tarantino movie I've seen probably 6 times. Even though it lasts almost 3 hours, you want it to last even longer and never end. Especially since this movie has such a slow pace and I could easily watch Brad Pitt driving through the city for a few hours while listening to the radio. Because it has such a wonderful vibe and you just want to sit with these characters and be with them just for the sake of being with them.

This is actually the second time that Tarantino "rewrote History" in his Movies - it's actually a Passion of his. The first being the Inglorious Bastards, where he rewrote Hitlers death and the End of WW2 as a heroic revenge Story. I assume you know what actually happened to Sharon Tate that night - but in Tarantinos Vision there were some badass Neighbors saving te Night :)

I've always wondered what kind of dark forces surround Roman Polanski. He started life by surviving the Holocaust, went on to make the film "Rosemary's Baby", and fled the United States on charges of sexual assault of a 13 year old girl. Some go as far to claim occult symbolism in the murder of his newlywed wife Sharon Tate and her friends. Polanski's is a bizarre, dark, horrific story.

I was upset at first when they mentioned that Sharon Tate was going to be a part of this movie. But Quentin Tarantino and Margot Robbie Met with Sharon's sister and she gave her approval. Just the thought of Sharon living in the end makes a bit of a difference.

As to Nobu's curiosity about the gun/holster in the wild west, it was a highly personal decision how someone went strapped. There was huge variation in pistols, gunbelts and holsters, being at the very birth of the industrial revolution. Many of these things were 'bespoke', meaning they were specially commissioned and custom made.

The WesternTV show Rick Dalton was in with the little girl was an actual show called Lancer where actor James Stacey played the character Johnny Madrid. It aired from 1968 to 1970. A YT channel called LancerFan has uploaded episodes and clips of the TV series.

i beleive the war hero part was a reference to Brad Pitt's "Fury" movie where he plays a world war Soldier and by the end is the ultimate hero of the events in that film. Y'all gotta check that out the story in that is amazing.

As someone who grew up in this era, this movie has a special place in my heart. What the movie does with Sharon Tate is so haunting knowing the true story of her fate .The baby you're out of time song can have multiple meanings not only for Sharon but literally her baby, and for Dalton's career. The haunting outro music serves as a reminder of what really happened. There is so much subtlety to unwrap here The scene where Manson visits the Tate home actually happened. I actually watched those Matt Helm movies in their first run in the theater. Austin Powers is based in part on Matt Helm and the In Like Flint movies

The hitch hiker girl "Pussycat" is Margaret Qualley she's the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell. The little girl acting with Rick Dalton is Julia Butters from the TV show "American Housewife".

When I saw this film in theaters in the Summer of 2019, I was losing it during the entire third act and when he pulled out the flamethrower, it was probably the second time in my life where I lost my sh*t entirely in a movie theater. (First time was the Giant-Man reveal in Civil War with Spidey's "Holy Sh*t!" reaction.) The soundtrack, acting, cinematography and the entire vibe of this film is iconic! Also Rick's car that Cliff drives is the exact same car Mr. Blonde drives in Reservoir Dogs. & this film made me appreciate Kraft Mac & Cheese (the cheese dust kind fyi but I still prefer the deluxe cheese sauce kind) 😂😂😂 One more Note: I forgot how insane the cast is in this film alone, even the Manson crew includes, Cassie from Euphoria, Amber from Scream (5), Kevin Smith's Daughter, Robin from Stranger Things, Love Quinn from You and Mother Freakin' Elvis Presley!!!

Ha! Preview clips ("coming attractions") have existed since the silent movie era, a hundred years ago, lol. (Also, you'd see commercials for movies on TV, same as now.)/ This and Jackie Brown are his movies with the most heart. They are total love letters. It's great because he kind of rescued Sharon Tate (and Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger and her fiancee) from only being known for being these victims of this horrible massacre. Now when you think of Sharon Tate, I think a lot of people think of this movie, rather than frozen in time as a beautiful murder victim.

You guys should definitely react to 2 of Polanski’s masterpieces: Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown. Both great films, although very different. You guys might also enjoy his great comedy The Fearless Vampire Killers.

Thank you both for your reactions and comments .....Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is in my favorite movie's list. The relationship between Rick and Cliff had it's endearing moments as well as comedy and serious . As much as Rick had I think Cliff saw that Rick did not have any real friends and Cliff was happy to be Rick's loyal friend . In the end Rick did see how loyal Cliff was and was going to be there for Cliff.... I love Margot Robbie in this movie so much.... she did a great job as Sharon Tate

Cahill is an Irish name, but it's not pronounced like that in Ireland. In this film they pronounce it "Cay-hill", while in Ireland it's pronounced, "Cah-hill", cah as in cabin.

Yup, that's why they were called spaghetti westerns. As well as Italy they were produce in Spain as well. Spaghetti westerns became a genre unto themselves. 500-600 were made.

In real life Squeaky Fromme later went to prison for firing a shot at President Gerald Ford. The little girl in the western movie was Julia Butters, who came out in the ABC series American Housewife. The actress who played Kurt Russell's wife was stuntwoman Zoe Bell, who was also in Tarantino's Death Proof. The actress who said "the Hawaiin guy looks cool" is Sydney Sweeney, who is in HBO's Euphoria. Again, really enjoyed your reaction!!!

Fun Fact: The actor Quentin Tarantino was going to cast as George Spahn (the old guy "hosting" the Manson family) was Burt Reynolds; who would've been REALLY familiar with the Spahn Ranch, as he worked there for some years as a stuntman and bit player in Westerns from the 50s and 60s. Tarantino had Reynolds locked down to play Spahn, and Burt had been working on learning his lines. However, shortly before shooting on those scenes began, Burt Reynolds passed away. As luck would have it, Quentin was able to get another Hollywood legend Bruce Dern to play the role on short notice (who, like Reynolds, would've also been familiar with the Spahn ranch from all the Westerns [both film and TV shows] that he appeared in around the same time as Burt).

When Manson comes to the house and mentions being a friend of “Terry” and Dennis Wilson, that was somewhat true. Charles Manson met Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys, and they even recorded two songs he wrote! Dennis introduced him to Terry Melcher, who was a record producer. Melcher declined to sign Manson. That probably set Manson off, which is why he went to Melcher’s old house, (Melcher and his then girlfriend Candice Bergen had moved earlier), and why he had his “family” target the house in the murders.

I love Quentin Tarantino. I hate myself for not being able to get into this movie, despite trying more than once, and in theaters. I just cannot pay attention, I literally tune out or fall asleep. I like the characters, but the plot is just....not for me.

Once Upon a Time is like an homage to 2 amazing films by Sergio Leone, the spaghetti western "Once Upon a Time in the West" from 1968 and 1984's "Once Upon a Time in America (3 versions the shortest one is 139 minutes) was fortunate enough to see the european cut first, nearly 4 hours of cinematic genius.
