My parents were on a month long (25th anniversary) trip to Australia, my brother had just started university in another part of the country and I had the entire house for myself. I had just turned 18 and had some friends over for a movie marathon. One of those movies was Pulp fiction. That night I was too drunk to follow the plot (completely legal to have alcohol when 18 where I grew up) so I watched it again the next day. Amazing crazy chaotic movie. Loved it ever since - and it brings back some good memories too 😊

Off topic - Tarantino and Uma Thurman were discussing the character of The Bride (from Kill Bill) while making this movie. So they were actually working on Kill Bill for quite a while before they even started making the movie(s). P.S. Butch was the one that keyed Vincent's car after they met at the bar.

I was 8-9 skipping school and going through my moms movie collection. The basement scene lowkey traumatized me for a few years. Which is weird because The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) was my favorite movie at the time. Check it out guys! Its the best of the bunch ;)

Fun fact, I’m pretty sure the reason Butch runs into Marsellus right after leaving his apartment was because Marsellus was waiting with Vincent at Butch’s apartment to kill Butch and he was taking so long so Marsellus went to go get food while Vincent stayed behind. And the reason Marsellus was with Vincent and not Jules was because Jules would’ve just retired.

Marcellus and Vincent were waiting at the apartment because it was actually the _least_ likely place for Butch to go if he were on the run. But the chance he would return was not quite zero. So Marcellus assigned the lowest priority agents he had-Vincent and himself-to that stakeout site. Vincent had just returned from three years in Amsterdam, and Marcellus was looking forward to catching up. Since Vincent’s heroin addiction made him have to use the restroom, Marcellus volunteered to get coffee and donuts for the both of them.

Also worth noting that Jules wasn’t with them at Butch’s apartment because he took an opportunity to get out of the game. If Vincent had taken the same opportunity, he’d be alive, Butch would be dead and Marcellus wouldn’t have ended up in Zed’s dungeon. Also if Vince hadn’t come back from Amsterdam, Marvin would be alive

You guys wouldn’t believe it, but the actor who plays Marvin who gets infamously killed in the backseat of the car is Phil LaMarr who is best known for his contributions as a cast member on the sketch MadTV and being a prolific voice actor in _Futurama, Family Guy, Samurai Jack, Justice League, Static Shock, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,_ etc.

This movie is loaded with great moments, the coffee thing at Jimmy's house is one of my favorites. Jules compliments the coffee but I thought he was just trying to keep Jimmy from getting mad. Then the Wolf shows up later, gets some coffee, and he gives Jimmy a gesture of appreciation, so we know Jules was not kidding. Then later in the restaurant Jules describes his wallet and it sounds funny, like he's just trying to intimidate Ringo. But when we see the wallet, it says exactly what he said it would. Jules wasn't kidding, just like with the coffee. What this movie means? I think it's a morality play. Butch and Jules are not killed in this movie. Butch earns redemption by risking his life to save Marcellus, and Jules renounces his criminal life. Vincent is killed in this movie and he refuses to acknowledge any kind of miracle. Vincent also has a judgmental attitude, such as looking down on Butch for no reason. Who kills Vincent? Marcellus counsels Butch to forget his pride, what happens to Marcellus's sense of pride later? Mia shows her attitude(my husband, your boss) where she feels she can have anything she wants. That leads her to help herself to Vincent's drugs. How did that work out for her? The movie is filled with criminals doing criminal things, yet it's also concerned with showing the outcome of doing right or wrong.

It’s interesting that you brought up last week how the characters that did what they thought was the right thing in Reservoir Dogs suffered for it while Jules and Butch both follow their consciences and survive here. A couple of minor fill in the blanks things: Tarantino has admitted that Butch was the one who keyed Vincent’s car, and in one scene there’s a report on the radio about a trophy being stolen from Jackrabbit Slims, so Vincent and Mia didn’t actually even win the dance contest.

He never needed it, film school might be useful if you need a piece of paper that "proves" you have a degree in film but otherwise, the very best, the absolutely timeless references among film directors never went to film school and yet their work will last forever. If you have the talent, love cinema and get to learn about it that is all you truly need. You do not make something like the opening scene to "Inglorious Basterds" without having watched and analyzed the very best in cinema that's been made all over the world.

I think the reason they appreciated it but were not blown away by it is because the generation that grew up after Pulp Fiction's release were raised on films that took inspiration from Pulp Fiction, so the storytelling novelties are not novel. It's like how Star Wars' special effects were amazing in 1977, but now a kid will watch it and think it's boring and cheap looking.

Interestingly enough, this movie takes place in the same universe Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Death Proof, Inglorious Bastards, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight, as some of the characters in those films are related to the characters in this movie.

I saw this in theaters in '94 and to this day the syringe scene is the best audience reaction I have ever been present for! And to the point of this film, if you think of the scenes chronologically, I feel like it's a movie about fate giving second chances to bad guys who don't deserve them. Jules saw his miracle and decided to change right away, deciding to leave the life. Vincent had multiple close calls that he walked away from unscathed and never took the hint. In order, the scene where Vincent meets Butch (aka the man who would eventually kill him) is so eerie. And Jules wasn't with him at Butch's place because he had quit, which led directly to Vincent's death. Jules also tried to pay his good fortune forward in the diner, offering the couple a second chance they didn't deserve. Marcellus got a second chance from Butch and recognized his fortune, then paid it back and gave Butch a second chance. I think it's also cool that any kind of meaning can only be understood after seeing the whole movie, like life it is best understood backwards. Love this movie! Enjoy your Tarantino journey and don't forget Death Proof and Four Rooms!

I have always considered this movie the supreme example of how different segments of a story can have a completely different effect when told in certain non-chronological orders than they ever could have had in chronological order. Before this movie came out, Paradise Lost had been my favorite example of that, but Pulp Fiction is an even better one.

@@donpietruk1517 And Altman, of course, is one of the best examples of a director who shows, not necessarily events out of chronological order, but dialogue and actions that make sense only on a second viewing, when you know things that haven't yet been revealed at the time. My favorite example is from M*A*S*H, when Radar discourages Hawkeye and Duke from making a move on Lt. "Dish" and explains why not to them without the soundtrack picking up what he is saying; later on we learn that she's having an affair with the colonel, and all is clear -- if we remember Radar's original warning, which by this point we probably don't unless we watch the movie again. The same kind of thing happens constantly in Altman's films.

How can you say this film doesn’t have a clear narrative? Also how can you say this film doesn’t have a main character? It actually has three. Butch, Vincent, and Jules. The whole film charts their paths either towards redemption or away from it.

It totally went over their heads. That they think nothing happened makes it clear they have to have the story explained to them in the plot. The intro states what Pulp Fiction means and yet guy says it's short stories which is not the meaning. It's tawdry characters living on the edges of society and committing crimes. Several perform good deeds and redeem themselves... Bruce Willis saves his boss, Samuel Jackson lets the two robbers go and quits being a criminal thug. Meanwhile John Travolta stays in crime despite the "divine intervention" of his life being spared while being shot at... and ends up being killed.

@@nsasupporter7557 It's really a matter of opinion. If you poll most English speaking movie fans, Pulp would rank High, much higher than most films. If you ask ten people to give their top 10, those ten people would all have some disagreements about some of the other top 10s. For example, I love movies and all genres (except horror) and if you gave Your top ten, I'm sure I would disagree with several. Tarantino types simply favor Script / Dialogue / Characters over pure action, nudity, humor. QT is the 'Seinfeld / Larry David of cinema- a pretty popular format ;)

What has always baffled me is the fact that Mia has all of those cameras in the house.. So I'm sure her hubby saw everything. She could have erased it, but there would be another issue with the missing footage. Vincent would not have been at fault since Mia went into Vincent's pocket and took it upon herself to snort an unknown substance. Just something that has bothered me 😂

There is a thing about "unknown substance": dealers used to pack cocaine in zip bags and heroine in plastic balls, but Vincent's dealer runed out of balls. Mia snort it, because it was supposed to be cocaine how it was packed.

I think the theme of this movie is second chances. Everybody got second chances but not everybody took advantage of it. Jules realized that god gave him a second chance. So he quit the life.

The odds of Wallace being there were not as low as you might think. He was there with Vincent. While they were waiting for Butch he went to get some snacks. The gun on the desk was likely his. That made it easier for Vincent to forget it was there. Still stupid of him of course.

Marcellus, on the other hand could easily afford something like that. I'd say it belongs to Marcellus, but he left it there with Vincent when he stepped out for coffee and donuts. Vincent didn't think to secure it when he went to take a shit. He just figured Marcellus would be back in a few minutes so didn't bother with it.

I remember seeing this movie in the theaters and all the hype it got at the time for both Tarantino and Travolta. I do remember also thinking at the time that it was both weird but also strangely fun too. It has since grown on me over the years, but I gotta admit that I'm not a huge Pulp Fiction fan as some other people are. I'm not ashamed to admit it, I like John Travolta as an actor. I think he is underrated. I'm glad this movie reignited his movie career. It helped lead to him being in some of my favorite action movies, Face/Off, Basic, Savages, The General's Daughter, Broken Arrow, and The Punisher. Interestingly enough, Face/Off is part of what I consider Nicolas Cage's 3 best action movies ever: Face/Off, Con Air, and The Rock, but I digress. I gotta admit, I'm not really much of a Tarantino fan, but I do enjoy some of his movies. I'd say Kill Bill is probably my favorite of his, but the funny thing is I think my favorite movies of his are actually not movies he directed, but just acted in, namely Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn.

One of the (many) brilliances of Reservoir Dogs, and especially Pulp Fiction, is that Tarantino masters diagetic sound; i.e every single song is a song the characters are actually listening to in the movie. In reservoir Dogs everyone is listening to the K-Billy 70s show, and in this movie every song is being listened to by the characters.

Should your Tarantino watchings lead you to Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, please please please take about 10-15 minutes beforehand to become pretty familiar with the Manson murders in Los Angeles in 1969. It will GREATLY enhance your moviewatching experience and reaction, and will in no possible way spoil anything in the movie for you. Seriously get as familiar as you can, and it will pay off immensely for you when watching the movie. The BEGINNING of the story was Vincent and Juelz showing up to get the case and murder Brad's crew. Juelz witnesses divine intervention, and decides it was a miracle. They leave, 'accidentally' blow off Marvin's head, meet Jimmy and meet 'The Wolf', and the Wolf helps them clean the car and dispose of the body, car, and evidence. Then Juelz and Vincent go for breakfast. The MIDDLE is the diner scene, (before Juelz retires, and before Vince met Butch, and took Mia on a date). This is where Juelz decides to retire for sure and let 'Ringo and Honey Bunny' go. Then they leave to go to Marcellus' club/ bar. They show up to deliver the Case(which is the missing jewels from the Reservoir Dogs heist) to Marcellus. Juelz tells Marcellus he is done, Vincent is upset with Juelz decision, and then he meets Butch, buying Red Apples (After we learn Butch is supposed to take a fall in a boxing match) and instantly Vincent had a problem with Butch. This is after Marcellus and Butch make the deal, so Marcellus calls Vincent over to cool the situation (because Vincent kills people lol). Marcellus leaves, Juelz and Vincent go on their separate ways, and Butch sets up his bets, then Vincent has his date with Mia, and all hell broke loose. The next day is the fight, and the END of the story is towards the middle of the movie (when Bruce Willis leaves on the chopper with his girl)... 'Vince is dead, after him and Juelz cleaned up Marvin, and then he met Butch at the club before Butch's fight... after the fight Mia thanked Vincent for dinner. The diner scene/robbery already happened. And Juelz was retired, so Marcellus went with Vince to Butch's apartment. Marcellus was hungry and Vincent had to shit. Marcellus left to get breakfast, Butch then showed up while Vince was taking the Browns to the Superbowl. That's why Butch came across Marcellus, right after shooting Vincent, and their whole interaction happened "MotherF*ker". Marcellus had been waiting on him all morning, and didn't think he'd show up there. So he couldn't believe when Butch pulled up at a stop light, while he was holding doughnuts. Then all hell brakes loose again, Butch ended up saving Marcellus, and Marcellus decides to let Butch go. Butch takes Zed's chopper, went and picked up his girl, and rode off in the sunset to get his fortune... THE END

I never thought to look the actual verse up until one of y'all said it wasn't accurate. The theme of the movie is redemption. Vincent screwed up with Mia by leaving her access to his heroin, but redeemed himself by acting quickly and saving her life. Butch screwed over Marcellus, but redeemed himself by coming back to save him. Jules has lived his life as a criminal hit man, but redeemed himself by not killing the robbers and quitting the crime life. Marcellus is the head of a criminal organization, but redeemed himself by not killing Butch and forgiving him. Lance is a heroin dealer, but redeemed himself by helping Vincent and providing his expertise and the adrenaline shot.

The movie Butch's girl was watching was The Losers. It was about incarcerated bikers given a deal or mission rather, to rescue someone in NAM. The highlight of the flick is the custom gun builds mounted to the various motorcycles including a rocket mounted on a TRIKE. Cool for 1969.

Oh you two are going to LOVE the conversations in Kill Bill. The strange thing about Pulp Fiction is that over time you realise what a subterfuge morality play it is. The two men who decide to walk away from the criminal underworld get to walk away free and live. While the main characters who don't make that decision have something awful happen to them. Mia and THAT overdose. Marcellus Wallas gets raped. And Vince Vega dies. And isn't that a brilliant directorial/scripting manoeuvre by Tarantino that when Butch and Vincent face off, we're on Butch's side, and glad he kills Vincent, when for the rest of Vincent's scenes we love him. The music is so cool. The cinematography framing is so cool. The conversations are super cool. And yet the script ultimately isn't a glorification of mob life. Bad things happen unless you're one of the ones who get out.

I absolutely LOVE TARANTINO! The reason you guys struggled to describe his movies is because he CREATED HIS OWN STYLE OR LANE! In other words doing or being Tarantino is its OWN STYLE. Even though Tarantino borrowed from multiple sources like a mixtape DJ he created a brand new style. The only other person who comes CLOSE to Tarantino's style is Guy Ritchie from Britain and maybe Robert Rodriguez who's Mexican I believe.

Actually, PF makes a lot of sense. What is the will of God? What did God want here? God warned Vincent twice - in the situation with the guy from the bathroom and in the situation with Mia - Vincent did not hear Him. Jules heard, and so he escaped. But Jules thought it was all for him, but it turned out that it was all for Vincent. Jules changed his life and became a bump only to let God punish Vincent. I think this is an incredibly deep thought. Anyway, guys, your reaction is one of the best PF reaction I have ever met here. Thank you.

A cool thing to note is that when Vincent and Jules get shot at without a scratch it changes Jules enough to retire and acknowledges the 'miracle' while Vincent blows it off. Jules survives and lives while Vincent is later killed. Just a cool way to look at the film.

Quentin Tarantino loves to make movies that are fascinating to him. Just add in great comical scenes, killer soundtrack, extreme violence with just a dash of bizarre conversations mix it together. Then you get a memorable film that speaks to people and they watch it as often as possible. Not everyone loves his films. But his films have connected to a massive amount of people in the world.

The reason Vincent is on the toilet when he’s killed and at the diner is because of constipation! It’s sometimes a side effect of Heroin! Also Butch is almost certainly the one who keyed Vincent’s car! He called him “Palooka” which is a term for a shitty fighter. This coupled with having to go down in a fight pushed him over the edge and he keyed Vincent’s car when he left!Also many think that Mr. Pink was the waiter! He said escaped at the end in a shootout (hence the bullets at the end of Reservoir Dogs) and then had to work for tips as the heat died down. Also Vincent and Mrs. Wallace definitely stole the dancing trophy! We hear on a radio that Bitch passes later in the movie that has a segment about a stolen dancing trophy! Also Wallace was most likely with Vincent at Butch’s house! That’s why he was nearby and had two cups of coffee!

The streets shown as the characters were driving were not meant to look real (as they were quite jerky, black and white, and very old). This almost dream-like, surrealist decision is one of the many small touches that makes this film so rewatch able.

I think the film its about second chances and the choices you make.People trying to scape from where they are. The final scene says : if you ( leading that kind of life) try hard to change, there's a possibility to scape, but if you don't believe in anything, well, for sure you will end up like Vincent.

Tarantino's films are stylized postmodern* moral tales. Like a good Wu Tang track, they reference a wealth of 20th Century pop culture and history. In this case, he's riffing on various stock situations of pulp crime stories dating back to the 1920's and '30s. As for the conversations: They are only as "random" as life itself. When people talk about things that are meaningful to them with conviction, it can be mesmerizing and suspenseful. Current franchise movie culture has us conditioned to feel that a story isn't moving forward if it isn't advancing some straightforward plot element. But there were times in American cinema where characters drove the plot, not the other way around, and it was actually thrilling. We moved at the character's pace because they were so magnetic, moment to moment. We weren't pressed for immediate "answers" but for an enveloping experience. Filmmakers like Tarantino remember. *Hence artful touches like the intentionally obvious rear projection and theatrical lighting in the car scenes, a la some 1940's film noir. 👓

I love that you guys are marathoning Tarantino films for the channel. He’s my 2nd favorite director of all time behind Kubrick imo. Even though I said Reservoir Dogs is my personal favorite QT film, not only do l think Pulp Fiction is QT’s best film but it’s one of the greatest films of all time. Samuel L. this movie is iconic. its so well done, its so interesting, the cast is fantastic, the style is fun and recognizable as tarentino imediately. the movie is surprising and funny and strange. i love movies where a bunch of story lines weave together. he likes to show things out of order too. and his dialogue is the strongest part of his films. this movie is very quotable.
