I believe Elizabeth took Will's name since the maid before said they were after her as a bargaining chip. If she didn't have the name of a governor then they wouldn't seek out to harm her or hold her hostage. Based on the average life of a noble woman in the 1800s I assume the only non noble last name she has heard of was Sparrow and Turner.

One of my favorite details about this movie is Jack's line: "This shot is not meant for you." It is a very vague but intriguing line that introduces the upcoming villain in this story!!!! And it opens up the question, "What is Jack's story?"

I like how when Norrington goes through Jack's inventory and he picks up the pistol, then Jack starts acting worried and hoping James doesn't do anything with it and when Norrington puts the pistol back down, then Jack relaxes and is thanking his lucky stars the "shot meant for Barbossa" survived the inspection. Who hasn't noticed, then focus on Jack while Norrington is presented with Jack's items.

Yeah, but it always bothered me that he just never bothered to get any more shots and powder along his journeys since getting off the island. The crew has been cursed for like 10 years. Meaning the mutiny happened at least that long ago where Jack was stranded, and we find out that he was only on the island for a short time. That's a whole decade that he just went about with only one shot? It's a cool bit of story at first, but it's one of the weakest bits of the story under scrutiny.

Johnny Depp created the character of Jack Sparrow all by himself. He said when he received the script he felt like his character wasn't what the movie needed. He said he had spent a lot of time with his sons watching cartoons and he wanted to create a character that was cartoon-ish. He wrote a lot of the lines himself. And at first Disney wasn't okay with how he made the character, but it became the most beloved character of the series Pirates of the Caribbean. All more respect to Johnny for this.

I was born in '73 and had gone on the Pirates ride more times than I can count by the time they announced this film. And nobody really understood what it was going to be. I mean, rides were based on movies, not the other way around. Even Disney wasn't sure if this was going to just bomb in theaters, because swashbuckling pirates hadn't been popular in movies for quite a while, and the last big pirate movie that came out bombed so bad that people predicted that was the end for the pirate genre. This movie was credited with bringing back the love of pirates to the movies, single-handedly revitalizing the genre. No one knew if it was going to work, until it absolutely blew everyone away and then Disney started working on the sequels. It's kind of like "Star Wars" as both movies were made as movies that could have been stand-alone movies, but that became so big at the box office and so huge among fans that sequels quickly followed.
@slchance8839
@slchance8839 Жыл бұрын
100% i was also born in 1973 and seen that ride countless. What I remember was that it was the "boring" ride at Disney that was a nice escape from the heat in the cool, dark, simple "boat" ride...which was just a row of seats on a track in 2 foot of water. What I first saw the commercials for the movie, I was like "they're gonna make a movie out of THAT ride?!" What I WAS happy to see, is that since i remember the ride: most of the ride was TORTUGA....and they had the pirate in the jail trying to get the dog with the keys, and the pirates chasing girls, and drunk on barrels, etc.... They actually did a full and ACCURATE representation of the ride's scene at tortuga. I think the pile of gold was there, and the Black Pearl shooting it's guns, but I cant remember that part so clearly.

In regards to the scene at roughly 11:35, where he ziplines with his chains, if you watch carefully you can see that he puts his wrists closer together and tosses the doubled-up chain slack over the rope. That's why it doesn't show him having a problem getting off, he just let go with the slack hand and the doubled-up chain comes back over the rope.

As a kid I never liked Norrington (for majority of time totally overlooking/forgetting his arc by the end of the movie) and didn’t understand why Elizabeth’s father wanted him so bad for Elizabeth but the 3rd movie changed my perspective after I finally settled to think about it. A noble man is always a noble man and a pirate is always a pirate. Their destiny’s always pulls them back to that path no matter how much they change. Will was born a pirate, he grew up trying to blend in noble society but his origin always pull him towards pirate-ship and in order to deny that pull he delude himself into hating it but ends up accepting it wholeheartedly later on, same thing happened for James Norrington. For 17th century, James actually do was an ideal choice for Elizabeth and from what we’ve seen he never for once mistreated her and valued her despite being used by her countless times when no man around that era would stand being destroyed (him losing his reputation and career) and looked down upon by his fiancé and her lover. What he did by the end of second movie was just trying to get his life back on track as it actually was but it just came with a price. However we can’t deny that around the presence of her True Love, Elizabeth wouldn’t be able to live a normal life with Norrington. She’ll just live like an ideal wife that’s it which she’ll kinda despise cause she loved her freedom more (explains her dynamics with Jack and why she would be satisfied with pirate life more).

What I love most about the villains in this movie is their motivation. They are not out to take over the seven seas, or to get revenge on someone, or world domination, etc, etc, all they wanted was to be human again, and the more you think about it, the more sympathetic you can't help be. Yes they killed people and raided, pillaged, plunder and all that other swashbuckling stuff you expect from a Pirate film, but in the end their motivations were completely tragic.

This movie is so incredibly clever, even beyond the obvious charm of Depp's characterization of Sparrow. I know a lot of people focus on how it's based on a ride and was a big risk for Disney at the time -- which it was -- but I think some people miss the script pretty brilliantly both leans into classic pirate "lore," while also subverting some classic story tropes. Think about pitching a pirate movie where, instead of searching for or stealing treasure, the pirates are trying to return it! And instead of a classic 'Mutiny on the Bounty' storyline, the mutiny has already happened and we're following the betrayed Captain (Sparrow), who might have actually been a bit in the right? Beyond the little nugget we get about Barbossa wanting the location of Isla de Muerta and Jack's refusal to divulge that information, we don't know the fully story of the mutiny...which is odd for a seafaring-type film. And this works well because the writers knew how to balance when to be serious and when they could kind of make fun at themselves and the genre itself; it's a tough balancing act, and this film did it so well, due also in part to the adventure/story being fairly contained, allowing the writers to focus then more on the characters. Just...augh, so so so good.

To add to this, all the three main characters are active participants from the start - so instead of getting a typical damsel in distress and an innocent, boyish main character (Turner) who "refuses the call to adventure" and are both timid, they both fill the role they have but embrace the danger, and the story for Will is a story about embracing the fact that pirates can be good people (theme of the movie). And so Will is not refusing the typical call to adventure but the call to embrace his pirate-roots. Elizabeth fills the typical role of the damsel but is witty and thus saves both Jack and Will through the course of the movie. Just brilliant storytelling all around, makes this my favourite adventure movie.

So I've actually been on the Pirates ride, before it was updated to reflect the film. Basically the story of the original ride was that you were traveling back through time to see the pirates in their glory days. So you'd see the pirates as skeletons, and then again as living people. Pretty sure that's where they got the inspiration for the curse - that idea of pirates turning into skeletons and back again. Also the scene with the inmates and the dog is ripped straight from the ride.

Little fun fact: originally, Jack was supposed to be a serious character. But Johnny improvised and kept doing his thing, inspiring himself a lot of Keith Richards (who will appear as his dad in the third movie). The director just went along with it.

When it was announced that Disney were going to do a film based on their pirates theme park ride everyone thought it was going to be awful yet it turned out to be one of the biggest film franchises and create one of the best film characters ever. This role would actually be Johnny’s first Oscar Nomination( which biased me thought he should have won) To answer your question about how Jack zipped wired down the rope escaping Norrington and his guards, what he did was he put his hands together, and threw the halved chain over the rope and grabbed the end underneath it with his left hand and as he reached the bottom of the line he let go and was able to run away. It happens so quickly it easy to get confused.

Hidden in seemingly throwaway lines scattered throughout the first 3 movies is the full story of how and why Jack was originally branded as a pirate and why his 100 soul "debt" to Davy Jones is what it is.

I love the first three Pirates movies so much! They're a fantastic trilogy! Also Barbossa was ok with killing/blowing up Will during the fight between the Pearl and the Interceptor because he didn't know who Will was. Jack was still using Will's identity as leverage, all Barbossa knew was that Jack knew who Bill Turner's son was. They were going after the Interceptor purely for the medallion. It was only coincidence and convenience that Will happened to also be on that ship. That's why Will was able to use himself as leverage because they didn't know who he was prior to that. So ya, they would have mindlessly killed him if they got the chance cuz they didn't know who he was.

22:34 The scene with them walking under water with a boat is actually realistic. Air pockets like that is what you call localized pooling. The only problem with a small boat like the one in this scene, is that it may be very difficult to not have the boat float up

The rope scene had me questioning at first too, not just how he'd get off, but also how he'd get on in the first place; however, if you look closely you can see that he's not sliding with the rope underneath the inside of the chains (inside of his arms), but that he's gathering the chain and throwing the entire chain over, grabbing it with one or both of his hands on the other side. Works like a charm.

An absolute God Tier performance by Johnney Depp! He MADE the Caribbean franchise with this one character. He also used to go to children's wards of hospitals dressed up a Jack Sparrow. (Though many people didn't know this & only learned it well after the fact because he didn't "publicize" it. aka no "posing for the cameras" for him)

I remember my dad renting this movie when it came out. My brother and I were pretty "meh" about it until Jack showed up on-screen. Asses were glued to seats from that point forward. The original trilogy was pretty solid, but the first set the precedent, and its contribution to the franchise shouldn't be minimized. The fight choreography, the writing and the chemistry between the actors sparkling and set the tone for what was to come.

Until maybe 2-3 years ago, I always considered it was Jack who was the main character not Will and Elizabeth, but with the way the series goes all three could easily be main characters. Oh and the Navy guys not being able to swim, apparently most sailors-Navy, pirates, dont know how to swim which is hilarious and kinda scary. Like dudes you are constantly on water might as well learn how to swim should you be shipwrecked. Now, the actor for Norrington, if you guys are up to it there is a tv show on Amazon called Why Women Kill and he plays a character that is so lovable and pairs quite well with the actress Lucy Liu . The show is incredible! From music score to outfits to plot line and oh god the build up in the final episode is just a gem.

While there are other movies and fight scenes that I love way more, the duel in the blacksmith building is hands down one of the best swordfights I've ever seen, if not the best. The way it's shot, the choreography, even the music syncing up with the clang of the swords is just on point. So many sword fights nowadays, even if they're good, they're shot in such a way that you can't really appreciate them, or they're so over the top that they aren't credible.

I disagree with you on Jack’s plan when battling Barbossa at the end. Jack knew he couldn’t kill Barbossa since he’s basically immortal, so to even the playing field Jack becomes cursed himself so he can’t be killed. Both can’t be slain so neither can win or lose. I think either Jack was planning on a battle of attrition until one “surrenders” or buy enough time for Will to take care of Barbossa’s goons and break the curse.
