The herb basil and the name Basil both have the same pronunciation in the UK, Irelan, Australia, New Zealand etc. The US is the odd one out in it's pronunciation. It's the same with 'herb'. We all pronounce the aitch, as in 'Herbie'. The US has dropped the aitch, for some unknown reason. Perhaps you're trying to sound French? ;) :)

Apparently its the opposite. America has retained the earlier pronunciation of herb (as it came to English from the French with the Normans) - when America was founded, thats how everyone said it. Its us that added the sound of the H for some reason, and it was before we spread English to the other counties. Apparently this is true for a lot of the differences in pronunciation American English has - its tended to stay truer to its roots while the rest of the English speaking world continued to evolve things.
