To anyone with a big book fear problem: stop obsessing over the satisfaction of having finished many books in little time and start focusing on how much is what you read actually giving you. It's okay to not reach your reading goal because you committed to a long book that took you months if you enjoyed it through the process, it's okay to have your book number stuck because what you read requires some more time, just remember to enjoy reading and not just having something read And if you started a huge book and you're not enjoying it at all just drop it and move on, you don't have to finish every book just because you read the first 50 pages Hope this helped🖤

“Just vibes” organization is the best way to describe my own form of organization I’ve ever heard 😂 like it’s chaos but it’s controlled chaos.

Honestly, it’s how my shelves are organized also, but I also don’t have as many books as Jesse. If I was at that point, I’d probably have a slightly different method.

I have mine loosely organized by genre, mostly vibes. And all the books I read as a wee little child (the ones I still own anyway) are all right next to each other, too.

My tip to read big books. My teacher said that the longer the book is, the more information there is, so the more you're going to learn/experience. We generally like to think that the longer a book is, the more boring parts it will have. Or even fluff. Here's my take, the longer the book, the more detailed the world building is, and the more character development and intrigue we'll get. Like didn't we all fly through Order of the Phoenix, even if it was the longest book in the series? I am currently reading the longest book on my shelf, and it's so empowering.

For some reason I love long and big books lol. They feel more "complete" in regards of character development /world building

To get through long books I do 3 things: 1- reward myself by reading a certain number or per chapter (ie by reading another book that's shorter or by having a snack) 2- by numbers. If you are reading a long book, make the daily goal per chapter that you think you can achieve for the day. (ie, by 5 or even one a day) 3-audiobooks. If the language used in the book makes it feel like its dragging on or you can't get into it as much, just find the audio version. Hope this helps

I read a lot of big books and LOVE big books more than shorter books. I highly recommend tabbing the books into smaller sections. A lot of big books are often divided into parts of there are prologues/interludes (*stares at Brandon Sanderson*) or you can always buy the paperback version (they're often look smaller and shorter and less intimidating). One I have in mind is The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. I have the paperback but originally read it as a hardcover - I think it's divided into several parts which makes the 800+ pages less intimidating :)

I like hardcovers myself, however there is one problem: they tend to be expensive. I only buy them when B & N is doing their 50% off Book Haul. They haven't done one of these since the pandemic started. I am a paper back girl at heart since they are usually more affordable for me.

I think a lot of times when listening to audio books it's hard to reach for fantasy. Delving into new worlds with complex politics and multiple povs is harder to focus on and remember while multi tasking as opposed to contemporary or romance. I was never a romance reader but found myself becoming one when my reading shifted to audiobooks.
@TMyers-rq9xs
@TMyers-rq9xs 2 жыл бұрын
Me too! I mean the romance novel part. I usually listen to audiobooks when doing mindless things at work and I need books that don't require as much concentration. I also agree fantasy (and for me some sci fi) is hard to listen to also. I did half read/half listened to Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb and Project Hail Mary. But both of those I started as real books and was into the story by the time I switched to audio. I don't know if I could have gotten into them as audiobook exclusively.

Assumption about my reading life: my entire personality is based on the Simon Snow trilogy, Heartstopper, and other MlM romances. Answer: this is VERY true 🙈 Also, a tip for conquering longer books: split it into manageable chunks. Samantha Shannon suggested this to tackled Priory of the Orange Tree. The book is split into 6 parts, and if you treat each as it’s own separate book it’s easier to manage the book as a whole. Hope that makes sense 🙈

How I bust the big book intimidation for my students: get a sticky note (put it inside the cover) & write out a realistic (based on the reader) portion of the book for the next 5-7 days (by chapters, pages, etc.). Have them put a check mark after each successful date, & watch their confidence bloom like a proud parent. Simple, effective, empowering.

I usually keep series by the same author together, then organize it by my favorites to ones I need to read XD Most of mine are paperback with a few hardback here and there. I always loved that I can put them in my purse on the go or in my hand. Not gonna lie, I have multiple copies of "The Mummy or Ramses The Damned by Anne Rice." My first copy my dad gave me for my 16th birthday and the cover tore off so I had to tape it, a copy to loan out and a copy with a pretty cover. I will admit, once you start reading romance books, you leap down that black hole.

If you read Perdido Street Station (over 850 pages) you'll have mastered big-book reading. I would suggest reading it in parts (it has seven parts) and also reading it in chunks of three to four chapters (it's incredibly dense). And if you read multiple books at the same time, to have quick and easy books to get to when you get tired of reading the big and dense book.

I am lucky to be able to listen to audio books at work (it has probably more than doubled my reading game since work allowed us to use earbuds for "music"). So one day someone at work was asking what I liked to do. When I said I liked to read another coworker interupted and said "she doesn't read, she listens to audiobooks". After telling her that listening to audiobooks is reading I then had to explain that I only listened to audiobooks at work or doing chores but read physical books otherwise.. Basically my bookish rumor about me told me more about the person who was quick to share it and the rude and judgemental way she chose to do so.
