If he doesn't have grappling experience and the area is disadvantageous then honestly it becomes a completely different ballgame. Right now he might be a bag of spoiled meat in a party city costume but at his prime he was a big guy, and even though Aikido is kinda closer to bullshit than Wrestling, Judo, BJJ, Sambo... if he managed to throw Gabriel it might be a very unpleasant impact. In a ring where he could manage distance I'd imagine he could just pick away at him until he went into deep waters. There's no way a guy who runs like that does roadwork. But if he can beat up Gene Labelle then we have a functional combat triangle

Segal used to be fairly famous in Brazil, specially in the 90s…so guys in the late 30s/early 40s, such as myself have watched countless reruns of his movies…we had a afternoon tv slot for lower budget/older movies called “Sessao da tarde”(afternoon session), and many Segal movies would be featured on it… I guess it’s kind of cool to meet the guy in person, idk…😅 Add the language barrier to it, and they might fail to understand how in bad faith he’s acting…from interviews in Portuguese with Anderson, Lyoto, Alex and some of their trainers, they see this as an opportunity to meet a movie star from their childhood, plus a lifelong martial artist that will show some nice cool looking moves… And in all fairness, some of those might kind of work in specific circumstances, such as the fighting against the wall/cage…I’ve seen Pereira chopping on arms and legs from the clinch and bottom of the guard, so these might work for him…I mean, I keep my mind open to everything, if it works, it works….heck, I’ve seen people pulling out crazy moves in MMA… I remember one guy landing a helicopter armbar! Do I thinks those moves are awesome? NO Do I think Alex will bring a completely different, Akido based game? HECK NO Could he begin to think abou different angles and targets for attack after these meeting? Maybe, idk… All I know is that he had fun, that’s all that matters CHAMA 🗿

Alex's coaches were genuinely impressed by Seagal. You can find his coaches interviews in Portuguese. People love to hate what they don't understand. Seagal has trained Karate and Gongfu as long as Aikido. His Aiki Budo is closer to old WW2 hardcore Samurai Jujitsu. His black belt testing is brutal. He really did help Lyoto refine his Mae Geri technique. There's tons of footage of them training together privately on front kick drills.

@AztecUnshaven

@@RancorousSea Lol, let's analyze that response: 1.) Machida was not in any video making fun of him. He and his brother Chinzo have been in over 6 different interviews in English and Portugese stating that Seagal's skills are real. How are you ignoring this? Lol. 2.) Anderson Silva made a lighthearted video with a few of his buddies poking fun at Seagal's mannerisms and clothing style. Machida was never there in that video. 3.) Anderson has stated on at least 10 different occasions in longform interviews (in Portugese and English) that Seagal truly has knowledge and helped him refine his front kick. This is a fact, regardless of whether we like Seagal or not. 4.) You're conveniently forgetting that Anderson makes fun of EVERYONE. He's made fun of Wanderlei Silva, he's made fun of Machida, he's made fun of Dana White, he's made fun of Chael Sonnen, he's made fun of his own coaches numerous times. So by your own goofy logic, none of those fighters are "real" either? Lmao.

The guy's personal life has been exposed as a mess in the U.S., but it looks like to Brazil he's still an action movie star. His run in the 90's is underrated, maybe because he's viewed as a joke now, but no other martial artists from that era came close. He introduced pretty brutal breaks and takedowns to fight scenes that hadn't been seen before. Jesse Enkamp interviewed him on his channel, and Steven does seem to have some legit self-defense techniques. Like Gabriel said though these don't necessarily translate to MMA.

When people overcommit to punches and fail to retract them properly, sometimes its possible to grab do something with it. Nothing like Seagal is showing, but I have successfully arm dragged people off of an overhand, or slipped their cross, trapped it with my opposite hand and landed a lead hook while their hand is stuck. I wouldn't try it in a fight, but sometimes I'll do it in sparring.

How about that, this will make it 3 UFC Champs that all trained with Seagal and then won their fights. No other Martial Artist Actor has done that with actual fighters. JS.

Aikijujitsu (not Aikido) if a very effective martial art. Aikido is basically aikijujitsu with all offense taken out.

Seagal is always fighting the "cooperative opponent". Seagal's opponent does what Seagal tells him to do.

You mean doing overly elaborate movements in slow motion, with an opponent who isn't resisting you, aren't effective in a real fight? Madness.

Brazilian elite fighters have this thing about Master Seagal. To me, the only sure thing about Master Seagal is you won’t get up if he sits on you.

Much is impractical, especially for someone that is new to Seagal's style, like Perreira, but the strikes when pressed up against the fence can work, because its not about being smashed in the face and Seagal did stress the location of where to strike. Ultimately its the same as being punched or kicked on or around the ear, its the equilibrium that goes. I think that's the take away there... don't just hit the head, be specific with the spot you are striking to cause that problem for the opponent. That's what I took out of it anyway. A lot of MMA guys on here just discredit everything that is not MMA... but why do you think Perreira, Silva and Machida sought his experience? A true martial artist will learn whatever they can and make it work for them.

1. Gabriel actually likes Seagal movies? Yikes. Under Siege was moderately tolerable, but that's more due to Tommy Lee Jones and the quality of the script than anything Seagal did in that movie. The rest of his catalogue is atrocious, with his recent direct-to-DVD releases being absolute jokes. To me, if I want to watch an 80s/90s martial arts movie, I'm going with JCVD every time. Under Siege doesn't come close to Kickboxer, Bloodsport, Time Cop, or hell, even Cyborg... it's maybe close to Street Fighter. 2. Seagal has difficulties standing for any length of time and moves in slow motion. How Gabriel believes he might not be able to take Seagal in a no-rules fight is beyond me. Yes, Seagal outweighs him by over 150lbs, but I've seen both of them move, and there's no way Seagal would ever be able to touch Gabriel. 3. The weirdest thing about Seagal taking credit for what are pretty basic and standard front-kicks is that kicks aren't really a thing in Aikido (primarily because it's hard to throw kicks while wearing a dress). The idea that a fat old man from a martial arts discipline that doesn't really involve kicks teaching either a 3rd Dan Shotokan karateka or a 5th Dan Taekwondo fighter how to throw the most basic high front-kick is absolutely hilarious.

People train with Seagal because it's high end PR and because they want to see if there are a couple things there that they can use. And there are. You don't go there to learn to fight like him, since you'd be destroyed or disqualified if you did.

For me he is an actor and that is all. I don't do aikido, but know people that do it much better than him so I don't think he is that good martial artist. I am a martial artist my self whole my life, did karate for 15 years than kick boxing for 10 years, and finally the last 5 years I am adding little wrestling and bjj (I am 41), so I can say that Gab is really generous with his comments 😊

I'm same as you almost. One thing I took was seikido which was karate with aikido and weapons etc. The striking was good. But the aikido worked only in street fights when someone (usually a roid monkey) grabbed me Otherwise it's not very effective at all.

I dont have any sources but i do remember Aikido being described as making a lot more sense when you think of your opponent holding a sword or knife. I believe the strange hand clasps that are sometimes insisted on are to avpid cutting yourself on a held blade. It would also explain why they emphasize so many overly-commited attacks. I believe it is because they are anticipating someone swinging a sword. Thats all second hand conjecture but it made a lot of sense to me.

That's an a-posteriori excuse. Aikido guys don't train with practice knives or swords or anything. And the founder of Aikido told people not to spar. It's really problematic to the core.
