To be fair the blocking he is showing comes from instinctive reflexes. If you see children fighting or play fighting, you'll see them move their legs the same way. Why is that a good thing? Because it's natural, and instinctive, you can easily train yourself to do it. Many fighters have had their leg broken just because they tanked a kick rather than providing an active defense like that. Tanking a kick really only works against a vastly weaker opponent, but even in that case it would be better to use your momentum to take the wind out of their sails. Worst case scenario your opponent is going to hurt their feet because they can't be certain where or how it's going to land.

I don't care what anyone says, this isn't complete bullshit. this guy has learnt these techniques over decades and is hitting with great angles of his hand on the right parts of the body to inflict pain and damage, whether he could apply it in an altercation is neither here nor there at his age, I don't think he's anywhere near as formidable as a ufc fighter but he knows his shit and deserves respect for helping get eyes on martial arts.

Even if he doesn’t use the techniques, and Steven is questionable often times, training in a different/ unique way (not overstraining the body) can be very beneficial for someone on Alex’s level. Training the brain differently and different body movements. That being said, Alex gaining even 1 ability for Steven that could help him makes the training well worth it. Also these fighters are very good at adjusting techniques that are flawed into things that work for them. At the highest level it’s a game of inches.
