This is around the time where lil Wayne put the game on a headlock. He really blew up after this, with his mixtape run and tha Carter 3. He basically self proclaimed himself as the best rapper alive and at the time it was basically between him and jay z. Both of their last names are Carter which brought a rivalry between them. Which later turned into a feature on tha Carter 3. This was definitely a situation where you just had to be there to understand. Not only that he influenced a lot of the rappers that came out after him.

One of the big "criticisms" of Southern Hip Hop, especially in the early 2000's was their flows were always "slow", which some equated to being basic, and that's one of the reasons why you hear Wayne bringing it up multiple times throughout the album.
@TrueGamer22887

Bob, I hope you understand or can grasp the impact that this album and his mixtapes prior to and after this had on hip-hop. This put EVERYONE on notice. Anyone could get it at that time. Evident by him jumping on everyone’s beats and murdering them on their own track. He had the streets on lock during this era.

Really surprised by your reaction to Best Rapper Alive. The production is great. They’re sampling Iron Maiden because that choir sound gives the track a weighty sense of importance. Like Wayne is this god descending upon his enemies.

You mentioned you were going to tackle Tha Carter III next- You should also consider covering his EP "The Leak", which was originally going to be Tha Carter III, but ended up getting leaked (hence the name) right before the album was supposed to drop- so Wayne put it out for free and just went back and completely re-did a ton of new songs for the album that became C3. The Leak was insanely popular, but when C3 came out, it changed the world.

Yeah, he takes music in really well. I wish there was more of a request for early 2000s underground hip hop, as that era had so many incredible artists with unique sounds in an era that was full of repetitive waves. That stuff would be up his alley and it would be a shame to miss out on those artists.

In the Song “Receipt” I think you missed the part in the chorus where they said “ to redeem your love” . To me he’s holding on to the Receipt of their love in case he wants it’s back.

Robin Thicke’s Dad is Allen Thicke from 80’s sitcom Family Ties. As a young man in the south at this time, this was like Illmatic. I didn’t even want to give Wayne the crown at the time and he’s like my 2nd Fav Emcee ever. Not off technical skill but punchlines and will alone! Even though his newer stuff can vary in quality he’s still top tier and the tears will def fly the day we realized we’ve heard his last song. 🙏🏾 Great content as always Pop Pop! ❤

It's funny, the few songs I usually go back to on Carter II are "Feel Me", "Receipt" and "Hustler Muzik"... Two of them Bob found more or less skippable but enjoyed most of the rest of the album

Wayne is the goat man. Certifiably. He changed music. He is a before-and-after of sorts. He EXPLODED after this album and was touring the world nonstop and still releasing music at a rate other artists could never keep up with. He’s the face of the mixtape era and would rap his ass off over whatever beat was popular that month. The best to ever do it; I love that we’ve reached a point where the industry continues to let people know that.

I remember my uncle heard me listening to this around the time it came out (he's considerably older than us) but he had the same interpretation of the Money on Mind hook as you did. The idea behind "Fuck bitches, get money" in this context isn't about having sex with many women. He's more so saying forget about them. Don't focus on bitches, focus on getting your money up. That's why the voice in the background, on the last bar, says "Money on my mind, so money is all I think of". We not thinkin' 'bout bitches, they gonna be there whenever. There will be plenty of opportunity to actually fuck 'em when the time comes. 👍🏾 ....Sorry, if someone pointed this out already.

Also today rapper don’t give you 3 verses anymore They claim listener attention span is short, but we all know they just don’t have the skill to do it

Hey, I know this may not be connected to this album, but I'm curious to see you listen to Man On The Moon 2. You listened to MOTM 1 and enjoyed it, and I think you would like that Kid Cudi project too

Technically he gets ALOT better over time, utilising different flows. You’ll see it across the Carters for sure Also Wayne holds Jay-Z to a high standard and he stopped writing and started freestyling because of Jay

If you got the cd when it came out, the production on “best rapper alive” is incredible. They must have lost the sample clearance because ever since the album dropped they pulled out the meat of the beat and it’s just hollow now… I can’t find the original and lost the cd… it was an epic track before the production change.
