@@janechoy2073 in director specifically, there are currently 3 locks (Nolan, Scorsese, and Lanthimos). Add in the international slot and that leaves one opening. Some think Gerwig will get it, but I believe it is between Song and Payne. And Song’s movie is winning by every critic and audience metric, while Payne’s case is “he’s a guy the Academy likes”. Julianne Moore is not getting these nominations not because she plays an unlikeable character but because people feel like she's already had her flowers and would rather put lesser known actors at the forefront. That doesn't mean an Oscar nomination isn't looking good for her especially because the category is so empty. Could say the same for Paul Giamatti who also missed the Gotham nomination.
