PS: Just in case no one told you: the guitar "solo" section in "The End" is all three guitarits together, trading licks in the following order: Paul, George, John. And then they repeat over and over again. So before the album (and the Beatles themselves) ends, Ringo gets a solo, and the other three get to wail out one last time. To go from "Love Me Do" to this in the space of 7 years is a pretty amazing growth spurt!

Yes, they did evolve, almost too quickly I thought, which may have contributed to them apparently burning out. They got so good at it that they could conceive, write and record a song in a few hours. And not just any song, a Beatles song, almost 300 of them and they were all unique. I guess they did as much as four good lads could do, which was more than anyone, so no complaints here.

@@halweiss8671 I agree. What's always mystified me is that on Abbey Road George's playing suddenly becomes almost virtuoso like. I think the Get Back special offers a clue: he talks at one point about he feels his playing improving by virtue of the fact that they're playing as a band every day. And if you listen to his playing on One After 909, it's BRILLIANt, as is his rerecorded solo for the album version of Let It Be. Ok, I have watched quite a few of these "heard Abbey Road for the first time" videos, and on each one, nobody listens to the side two medley as a whole. They keep stopping between each segment. Now I understand that they are commenting on each track, and may not know that the real strength is in the complete medley. But they are missing the greatness of the medley by breaking it up into individual tracks. I hope that after they have "done their thing", that they go back and listen as intended. And possibly comment on it as a whole, as it was intended to be heard.
@ThrowShow20143 жыл бұрын
“Her Majesty” was originally placed between “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polythene Pam”. They decided to take it out of the medley, and McCartney instructed it to be destroyed. However, EMI had a strict policy that no Beatles recording ever be destroyed and the tape operator added it to the end of the album. The Beatles heard it and liked it, so they decided to keep it as a “secret track” (it was not listed on the original album). So “The End” was actually supposed to be the end.

Here are a few semi-interesting comments on some of the songs from my perspective. *Come Together* The one line that I've always found particularly interesting is when Lennon sings, 'he said one and one and one is three'. I enjoy it only bcuz he intentionally drags out each 'one' just a tiny bit. He sings, 'one and onnne and onnnnne is three'. I'm sure it's barely noticeable to most listeners but I think it's very creative touch. *Here Comes The Sun* The instrument you hear in the beginning is a Moog synthesizer. Harrison was one of the first people ever to purchase one. In the sequence of notes played in the intro, the pitch of last note that drops suddenly was unintentional. They had discovered that when they pressed the key and held it down, it was unable to hold a steady pitch. Being that the instrument Harrison had was essentially a prototype, they had to have a technician from the factory come down to the studio to resolve the malfunction. Ultimately they decided to leave it in the recording bcuz, in typical Beatles fashion, they often found a certain charm in minor mistakes and would view such things as oddly unique. *Carry That Weight* I recall reading that the reason all four Beatles sang 'boy, you're gonna carry that weight a long time' is bcuz they suspected this would be their final LP and knew that each of them would forever carry the reputation of being a Beatle. Needless to say, that's a lot of weight.

I think the word you are looking for when you talk about "bounce" on Here Comes The Sun is oscillation. It was on the new MOOG synthesizer they were playing with. At that time they weren't all in one units like they are now. So the separate oscillator was what they were playing with. You also hear it in the chorus.
@Vince_Steele3 жыл бұрын
George Harrison owned that particular synthesizer and it was in need of repairs. As soon as the note was released, instead of stopping it would dive down in pitch until a key was pressed again, which is how they got it to dive at the end of the intro, and how they got it to bounce around later on in the song.
@Sweetish_Jeff_3 жыл бұрын
This is the first Beatles album which introduced the Moog. The “white noise” you hear at the end of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” is the synthesizer, too.
@elliegonzales82123 жыл бұрын
@@Vince_Steele Cool. I read something that said they accomplished it with the oscillator attachment, but who knows.
@Vince_Steele3 жыл бұрын
No need to muck about with an oscillator when you can achieve a nicer effect from a faulty keyboard. Whoever decided it was an oscillator obviously wasn't aware of the real reason behind the effects.

I love your reactions to songs that i listened to 50 years ago when i heard them for the first time. Listining to Abbey Road was like being a child in the middle of a Grand Carnival. Abbey Road was like their masterpiece back then. It was a musical triumph. It brought you from the dark depths of despair to being an eagle soaring through the mountains. It made you laugh, then wonder why you were crying in the next song. Then before it was over they took you home, then tucked you into bed.

@Vince_Steele3 жыл бұрын
On Here Comes the Sun, you made note of the synthesiser tone dropping at the end of the intro, and later on with it bobbling about. That was all thanks to George Harrison's fancy new Synthesiser being on the fritz. Normally you would release the key and the sound would stop, but because it was in need of repairs, the note would dive down to the lowest note possible instead, until a new note was played. So rather than wait for the repair man to service the thing before using it, George made the most of the situation and created the wonderful sounds that we hear on the final track. Which means that little bit of loose wiggle room you talk about is simply the synthesiser trying to drop the note into a dive before the next note gets hit.

That is interesting, but each time I've heard of quirky things in their songs being "mistakes" or unintentional it took a little of the magic away... Kind of like when you explain a joke and it isn't funny anymore.
@Vince_Steele3 жыл бұрын
@@albertschepis, it wasn't a mistake or unintentional. George liked the sound that it was making while it was having issues, so he incorporated it into the song by timing the fingering of the keyboard keys to get the desired result.

Even though it probably wasn't meant, there is a heavy symbolism you can read into to the finish of the medley, the final piece of music on the final Beatles album (almost): "Carry that weight" - they would indeed have to carry the weight of having been part of the biggest band for the rest of their lives. And then... "The end". A final guitar battle between them, a showpiece for Ringo, and then it's all over. Almost.
@papercup25173 жыл бұрын
I get that feeling too, of a kind of elegy for the band's passing; a marking of that moment in history - including You Never Give Me Your Money, reflecting the ghastliness of the Allan Klein management debacle, Golden Slumbers and The End. Although it's been argued the Beatles never realised this would be their final recorded album (there was some talk among them of 'the next album', that never materialised) and as a culmination of several years of a kind of spiritual exhaustion and different directions creating widening divisions between the four of them, the end of the band as a unit - I can't help but think McCartney knew in his heart the 'end was nigh', when he wrote lines like 'Once there was a way, to get back homewards; once there was a way, to get back home... Oh, sleep pretty darling, do not cry... and I will sing a lull-abye-ee.... [My apologies for that l-o-n-n-g-g sentence, I couldn't seem to break it down so I hope it makes some sense!]

The synth sounds on 'Here comes the sun' were a very early Moog synthesiser which had teething problems, if they wanted a sustained note it just wouldn't hold it's pitch and would drop down, a happy accident that they liked and then incorporated into the track. 'Sun King' was inspired by Fleetwood Mac's hit instrumental 'Albatross', which had a similar hypnotic feel. The Latino lyrics were a bit of Lennon's nonsense style, (like 'Come together' it's mostly gobbledegook), it's just interesting sounds and wordplay. In 'Polythene Pam' John uses his exaggerated Liverpool 'Scouse' accent, he was actually the least working class of the Beatles and adopted a heavier accent for effect a lot of the time. 'Here comes the sun' and 'You never give me your money' both reflect their respective writers feelings over aspects of their Apple Records company, and their growing frustrations with business issues. Harrison skipped one of those meetings to escape to his friend, Eric Clapton's, idyllic house and grounds. During an uncommonly bright early spring day, he was inspired and looking forward to the time when he was no longer shackled by being a Beatle. 'Because' is likely inspired by Beethoven, and features their producer, George Martin, playing the electric harpsicord. It took a lot of effort for Martin, as he considered himself not that great a player, but needed to keep tightly in sync with Lennon's even guitar picking. The Side 2 medley was really a selection of half finished ideas pooled together, tying up loose ends. Some no more than a verse or two, which in an alternative universe may easily have remained fragments of demos never to be officially heard, or may have been worked up into full songs in their own right. In reality The Beatles rarely had anything left over that didn't eventually get released as a polished track, albeit most surfacing on their subsequent solo releases.

Great job again, Crystal! Let’s dig in a little deeper into the chords: Side A features a lot of bright major chords (G, C), with some clever modulations. For example, George Harrison’s “Something” is mostly in C but modulates to A Major when the distinctive six-note guitar riff lands on a C# (the third of the A major chord) instead of C natural (the root of the C chord) to go into the middle section (“You’re asking me, will our love grow?”). And as you mention, we even get the old doo wop I, VI, IV, V chord progression with Octopus's Garden. Yes, John balances these major chords with his D minor songs, “Come Together” and “She’s So Heavy,” but the bright chords of side A generally give the record a fun, whimsical feel. Then you get to side B, and after “Here Comes the Sun” (in A Major), we get a heavy dose of E major (and its relative minor, C#) - with E being the darkest of the major chords. The result is a side B that feels like it has something important, urgent, and earnest to say... until we return to C major for the Golden Slumbers medley, taking us back “home” in an almost wistful way. It’s a really savvy way to have put the record together.

The interconnecting suite of music on side two was Paul's idea. He was so innovative.
@jwb9323 жыл бұрын
@@gribwitch Yep! And he changed the keys of Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam, originally composed in E flat Major, up a half step to E Major. Fortunately, he didn't have to worry about "Because". It was written in C# minor, the relative minor of E Major (with the song itself based on a reversal of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor). That's why it feels like the beginning of the medley to many people, even if it wasn't conceived that way. (It even has some eerie parallels to "You Never Give Me Your Money," allowing the two songs to sound great back to back.)

Beautiful reaction!!! And, oh my goodness! at the end, telling us how you listened to Sgt. Pepper’s, inside and out, is so excellent, I can’t even tell you!! It’s impossible to give a truly proper reaction to a Beatles album only one time through. I’ve listened to many Beatle full album reactions, and I’m always left with the feeling that the person didn’t appreciate such and such a song, or such and such a moment, enough because they haven’t listened to it on it’s own enough. Or, such great songs and moments get overlooked because a whole album is so much material to even quite remember what you just listened to. It’s just too much. But how you listened to Sgt. Pepper over and over, fixes that completely. That was so smart, and so satisfying for us reactors who love the Beatles and don’t want you to miss anything! 😊. If I had my way, you could give us a whole new second video on each album breaking down how you NOW feel about each song after listening to it over and over again. I’m sure you could tell us things you discovered and liked that weren’t even noticed the first time through. My vote is that you would do that 😁.

One of the really neat things about this album's development is the way Lennon & McCartney were diverging: McCartney is making more intensely elaborate songs, and Lennon is simplifying and stripping down. In the gap left behind, Harrison finally gets his chance to shine with compositions that are sometimes complicated, but performed with simple beauty. He lands shots where the other two fail.
