Don’t be confused- Here’s the BREAKDOWN 1) The girl in beginning is at the statue of the Author of the Book she’s reading - Grand Budapest Hotel 2)Then we go to the author of the book - the statue the girl was at - and he starts to tell the story of his inspiration for the book 3) We then go to him as younger man - Jude Law - as he visited the hotel and hears the story from Zero 4) We end on the bench with the girl having just finished reading the book of what we just watched. This movie is GENIUS

It's the most extreme example of the unreliable narrator that I know. The movie is the imagination of a girl reading a book written from the memory of a decades old recounting of an old man's youth. If you want to find an excuse for your film being unrealistic, that's the way to do it. 😂

Basically, you watched a movie about a girl reading a book whose story is the result of the author interviewing a man about the life of his mentor when he was young and working as a lobby boy in a hotel during the early 1930's. It was more or less a story about a story about a story.

This is one of my favourite movies ♥. It's unique, hilarious and, in the end, incredibly poignant. The actors, the script, the music, the sets, the costumes, the cinematography and the direction are just fab. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort) was nominated for an Oscar for this movie and he should have won. Saw this movie with my daughter Holly in Spain on my birthday. That's another reason it's dear to my heart.

A railcar designed to scale a steep hill is called a "funicular." You can see the entrance to it labeled thus at one point in the movie. They are raised and lowered by cable because a self-powered locomotive wouldn't have sufficient friction on such an incline.
@d.t.nelson8805 Жыл бұрын
The girl at the beginning and end was reading the book by the author (Tom Wilkinson) who was told a story when he was younger (Jude Law). That story, told by Zero as an old man (F. Murray Abraham), relaying his life as a Lobby Boy (Tony Revolori) at the Grand Budapest Hotel and his relationship with M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), the concierge. The girl is considered to be the "present day" (around the time the movie was released- 2014). The Author (played by Tom Wilkenson)as he relays the story in his book to the reader is set in the 1980s. The story being told by an older Zero (F Murray Abraham) to the younger author (played by Jude Law) is set around the late 1960s, while the main story being told is set in the early 1930s. Other really good Wes Anderson movies you should see are Moonlight Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited, and Fantastic Mr. Fox (animated movie).

The narrator is hilariously complicated. The girl in the beginning is reading the book by the author, who is the old guy who shouts at his son. The book is the story about how he as a young man, played by Jude Law, met Zero, who tells him his life story. In the beginning we go down the layers from the girl reading it, to the author writing the book, him being told the story and in that story is where the movie takes place. Then going back up the layers at the end, ending with the girl finishing the book. This is one of my favourites and I'm really happy you enjoy this kind of humor. Wes Andersen isn't everyones cup of tea.

I think it's 20 years earlier. The place it is set in seems to be strongly inspired by the Austrian Empire, which ended at the End of World War 1. Though later there also seem to be Nazis, which really did appear like that only in the 30s. It's all not really actual Europe, so I guess they didn't really stick to any specific years.

Knowing many of the locations the movie was shot on, it gives me an especially surrealist vibe. The shooting locations are mainly in Saxony, Germany. The Kaufhaus Görlitz (Görlitz Shopping Mall) was used for the hotel itself. The place the girl is reading the book is also in Görlitz. The elevator (but not the funicular) is the Bad Schandau elevator. The museum is the Zwinger in Dresden, and the entrance hall to the museum is the entrance to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Peinture Gallery Old Masters) in the Zwinger. Random alleys are either in Görlitz or in Dresden. If I am not mistaken, the Mendl bakery is in the very house my former ophthalmologist used to reside. The outside of the prison is Castle Kriebstein in central Saxony. The inside of the prison is an old prison in Zwickau. The rock formations are in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and the place Agatha and Zero are married is on the Bastei rock formation in said mountains.

To really understand this film, you have to remember everything that happens in it. The thing I love the most is the framing for the story. In other words, the scenes set in the 60s, 80s and present day. You might go into this film thinking it's a simple story about a concierge and his lobby boy. That's the story Older Zero was trying to tell, when he and the hotel were all that was left of it. Because the hotel was demolished soon afterwards while the Young Writer was in South America, and we don't know what happened to Older Zero after that, the Writer was effectively the only person left who knew the story, and the only evidence was inside his head. When he wrote his book, and a copy ended in the hands of the girl in the present day, that lets you know that the story will live on. I admire how they managed to convey that. Ralph Fiennes, Saoirse Ronan and Jude Law are my three favourite stars in this movie. They are amazing.
