Del Rio's Debriefing when Infinity Returned to Earth roughly went like this: Del Rio: [lengthy Mission report of what happened] Command: Hm, sounds dangerous, we better prepare for the Didacts arrival. Anything else? Del Rio: Yes, we found Spartan 117 on Requiem. Command: Wait, what?! Spartan 117, *THE* Spartan was on Requiem? When...how...well doesn't matter, good to have him back. Let us talk to him. Del Rio: I left him there. Command: You what? Del Rio: He disobeyed my Command so i left him there. Command: Hold up, let me get this right. You left the Master Chief, the War Hero of the Covenant War and who saved our asses from the Flood, on a Forerunner Planet? Del Rio: Yes. Command: You're fired, effective immediately. Get me Lasky, i want to congratulate him for his promotion to Captain. [Com stays open, screaming in the Background] ...believe Del Rio left Master Chief...imbecile leaves a War Hero on a hostile Planet...court martialed as soon as his ass arrives on earth!

She wasn't deleted. The Chief was supposed to delete Cortana (or at least deliver her), which never happened (hence why the new AI asked if Chief hit his head... because Chief is the middle man of the entire mission, he should know this). She basically corrected herself by pointing out that she hasn't been deleted herself, insinuating that the mission wasn't successful (and that Cortana was never deleted). The trailer: The AI reminds the Spartan that her mission was to “enter this installation, imitate Cortana, and lock her down for retrieval,” while Chief was supposed to transport Cortana back to the USS Infinity for deletion. The AI reveals that she was also supposed to be deleted upon “successful deployment” but that hasn’t happened either.

For what it's worth, the actual story of Halo 4 was pretty damn good. It showed a side of Chief we'd never seen and they've actually gone deeper into Forerunner lore, even actually showing us one as the main protagonist and they took a risk by killing Cortana. Killing her even made sense im terms of story because the 7 years of age thing was actually established by Bungie. It's a shame that the art style and gameplay itself was really mediocre and in Halo 5, it was the polar opposite

The art style change was because Bungie took away the rights to most of Halo’s current design when they left, like the Pelican, most weapons, the Spartan armor, and the frigate. If Bungie didn’t take almost everything with them, Requiem, the Prometheans, and the Didact would’ve resembled Halo 3 Forerunner stuff.

Halsey kidnapping kids to become Spartan II’s always will have me feeling bad for master chief, he’s broken. And his mental health has got to be in shambles, one of my biggest dislikes is the disrespect that Palmer has towards chief when they meet “I thought you’d be taller” that really struck me because chief deserves respect from everyone for saving humanity multiple times and being the 1 of the 2 only hyper lethal Spartans ever known with the other being Noble 6

In Halo, when the mantle is referenced, they are talking about the Mantle of Responsibility, it is given to the race that is to be the caretakers of the galaxy. It was originally given to ancient humans, but after a war with the Forerunners, they stole it. During the flood war, they decided to use the Halo array and left the mantle for humans.

Sorry to be the 'um ashually' guy but the forerunners were first granted the mantle of responsibility but the precursors wanted to strip them of it as they viewed humanity as more worth of the mantle. The forerunners then committed genocide against the precursors, retaining the mantle... Ancient humanity then discovered the flood (ancient corrupted remnants of precursors who morphed into dust in an effort to stave off genocide) and found it had spread to forerunner worlds and wiped them out, the forerunners then declared war on humanity and tried to wipe them out (succeeded in beating them but basically devolved them to our ancient relatives) halo lore is a bitch to wrap your head around sometimes 😂

@@joebarthram596 They never actually gained the Mantle of Responsibility. They slaughtered the Precursors, claimed it for themselves, and then crushed humanity, the actual intended recipients. One Precursor, Primordial, enacted a plan of revenge and nearly destroyed the galaxy with the Flood. There's supposed to be another test, but what exactly that is or was in unknown. It's now even more confusing because some new books hint more benevolent Precursors may have survived, so who knows what the true plan is.

@robertb7230 2 жыл бұрын
@@sentinel-wraith9060 The issue is the story is all fucked up because originally---Humanity was supposed to be the forerunners. The original story was supposed to be that Ancient Humanity encountered the flood, and fought a galaxy spanning war against it but realized it couldn't win. Humans built the halos and then stored our genetic 'seeds' in them to be replanted after detonation. This is why Guilty Spark calls chief forerunner--the original Halo games were supposed to be about humanity rising against to reclaim its lost empire. (Which is all effectively a sci-fi version of Noah's Ark, which is why the flood is called the flood.)

There’s the folks who are blinded by nostalgia and will hate anything 343 does, even the things they get right and then there’s the people who only knows 4 and on and will hate everything that came before it, but this why I love your play through of this. I started with Halo 4 back in when I was 12 in 13, and it was the first FPS my parents let me play. It is to this day my favorite Halo (including infinite) so it's great to see a comment like this. I went to Reach after 4 and then did CE, 2, and 3 on the MCC and thought they were all at least good, some great (specifically I loved everything about reach, the gameplay on CE and 2 was good, CE had an interesting story but 2 blew it out of the water, really didn't care for the gameplay and art style of 3, but the story carried the rest just enough to make the game enjoyable.) In Halo 5 I didn't care for any story points to do with spartan Locke, but the gameplay was good and some of the levels and set pieces were really cool. Infinite has a great story, but I just don't think that the atmosphere that an open-world game provides matches what I want in a Halo game. Sorry for the long comment, but I just wanted to say that even though we're rare, the are some people who can see both the flaws and the success of both bungie and 343i.

I started playing Halo in 2006 and my first game was Halo CE. I loved all Bungie games. The artstyle and the story was almost perfect to me, and when Halo 4 came out I didn't like it that much, but now that I watch this video I realize its story was really good, definitely 343's best Halo game until Halo Infinite. Halo 5 story was bad, though I really enjoyed the mechanics and the multiplayer. I haven't completed Halo Infinite campaign yet but it seems to be an amazing game in terms of gameplay and artstyle, with the story being solid. It feels like if we mixed the best of 343 and the best of Bungie

“The mantle of responsibility” was a concept created by the Precursors (basically gods), that the most evolved race should be the leaders and caretakers of the universes. The Forerunners actually rose up and “claimed” (read: fought and killed) it from the Precursors. During this war, the Precursors used some advanced technology to turn themselves into dust that could reanimate after millions of years or however long. Over time tho, the dust was corrupted, and ancient humans (before the first firing of the Halos) discovered the dust and used it as animal feed, thus creating the Flood over some time. This drove ancient humans into forerunner territory, caused the Human-Forerunner war, and then caused the Forerunners to have to fight the Flood also. This caused the downfall of both. The Flood’s ancient genetic memory is linked with the Precursors intelligence. So the Gravemind can be seen as a combination of all corrupted Precursors, as well as all the intelligence gained from assimilation of other species.

I absolutely love the continued theme of the humanity of the Spartans and whether they are machines or humans, for the longest time the chief and probably many Spartans felt like mere machines to many. From the stories of Halo Legends, and then with 343's halo games, it gives a new view on them. While typing this I realized how funny it is that the covenant see the master chief more as a living being i.e. as the Demon, then most humans that see a machine or military hardware.

Halo 4's story in my opinion was one of the best to of grace the Halo universe, especially in that you get to interact with it with the quick time events here and there. The end part of it consisting a Star Wars Trench Run, storming a hostile ship, and lastly the numerous first-person quick time events and detonating a nuke after one last look at Earth made you feel like a darn hero. With sacrifices being made in losing a character we've all known since the start who had been slowly deteriorating over the course of the game tugging on the strings. One of my favorite moments was during the second mission where after navigating the tunnels, you emerge to some seriously beautiful scenery with the Requiem theme playing and my first thoughts were "I want to explore this whole place!" I hope Halo Infinite can capture that feel once again.

Yeah you gotta read the books to know what Dr Halsey is talking about. John and 74 other kids were kidnapped at age of six and put through harsh training to put down rebels at the time. At age 14 they were augmented and given their first suits of armor that didn't have shields. The suit with shields didn't appear to right before the games start by which time John and the surviving Spartan IIs were 41

Halo 4 hits me pretty hard on a personal level. I've been in the military my entire adult life. I played Halo Combat Evolved back when I was just a kid, and Chief was my hero. I wanted to *be* a hero. It's definitely not all that glorious... "Soldiers aren't machines. We're just people.", is a line that strikes me deep. You just keep going and going, and you do start to feel like a machine. You can't think about all the fucked up shit, you just have to keep going. You just start closing off. One day we had a guy not show up for roll call. I think the poor guy had finally just had enough. I think about him whenever I play this game. Rest in peace Sully.

In regards to the intro sequence with the interrogation of Halsey. It always amuses me how many people shit on the Spartan-II's, saying they were shit compared to the Spartan-III or Spartan-IV's when it came to the covenant but almost every time, they fail to realize that the Spartan-II's were never meant to fight the Covenant, they were "designed" to, as the interrogator stated, crush Human rebellion. They Spartan-II Program was authorized by ONI in 2511, the same year most of the Spartan-II's were born, they were than kidnapped 6 years later in 2517 and then trained until 2525, which is when first contact with the Covenant actually happened.

24:11 "I would think you of all people would appreciate the benefits of living to fight another day." This makes me wonder about Del Rio's history during the Human-Covenant War. It's easy to dismiss him as an unreasonable contrarian set on ruining the protagonist's day, but think about it. During the Fall of Reach, the Master Chief was one of the few remaining Spartans because he got away on the Pillar of Autumn, a ship which fled the battle and arrived at Installation 04. During the Battle of Earth, Master Chief took part in the early part of the battle (the part against the pitifully small Covenant fleet that was shocked that there were even humans on Earth), but then left the battle on the In Amber Clad, following the Solemn Pennance (Regret's carrier) to Installation 05. When the UNSC was preparing for their final stand against the Flood, the Master Chief--for whom an entire military operation was conducted to retrieve when he arrived on the Antodyne Spirit (the Forerunner Dreadnought from High Charity)--was on the Forward Unto Dawn, leaving through the Portal for who knows where. Obviously, the Chief wasn't running away from battle. We would know; we controlled him as players through all of this. But I wonder if Del Rio served in the fleets that defended Earth or Reach, or some other planet that got glassed by the Covenant. I wonder if he's seen ships get destroyed and UNSC servicemembers get killed in numbers that would shatter a man. And the Chief getting all the accolades for being a Hero with a capital H.... despite constantly being in ships "fleeing the scene". Humanity's greatest battle was its last stand at Earth, and Chief was absent for pretty much the entirety of it (except for the comically easy part in the beginning). As wrong as Del Rio is, I wonder if he's just looking at Master Chief and seeing a coward who takes credit for battles that he flees from rather than seeing, well, the Master Chief. We see in the Halo 5 "Hunt the Truth" audio drama that he has a personal vendetta against the Chief and uses that as a crutch when he tries to get into politics. This man is broken and is letting what could be PTSD--or just war-weary cynicism--craft his own mental version of the Chief. Adjacent to this, I can't help but imagine that he'd be ready to court martial for cowardice and desertion any UNSC servicemember who has the last name "Keyes".

Nobody here is talking about the fact that in the last cutscene just before the chief takes off his armor, you can clearly see how his body has outgrown the armor... I mean the armor doesn't fit him anymore, his inner black suit is showing mostly.

"Spartans Never Die" is one of my favorite bits of Halo lore. Essentially, it was the protocol that Spartans were NEVER allowed to be labeled as "Killed in Action", in order to keep morale up. And one of my favorite uses of it comes from the Ghosts of Onyx book (SPOILERS BELOW) There's a Spartan named Kurt who's making a last stand as a few other Spartans and Halsey flee through a Forerunner portal. So, as he's wounded and near-death, the Shipmaster of a fleet comes to gloat at him. "You will die, and we will reopen the path." "- chuckles - Die? Haven't you heard? Spartans never die." and proceeds to set off a nuke in their face, wiping out the entire Covenant army and himself.

During development, the original scene at 36:00 would consist of the player jumping down onto a Lich, fighting through and jumping across them to get to the Didact's ship. The section was largely completed, however it was cut from the final version, due to either technical issues or story changes.

I felt Del Rio’s characterization got mangled by rushed/insufficient writing. He is completely right to call out Infinity’s need to recover vs the Covenant remnant + Cortana’s rampancy, but instead of, say, a scene of arguing it out thoroughly with Master Chief (and potentially adding more depth to just how much the world has changed since the Chief went on ice), he just goes full rage mode and immediately pulls rank on the single greatest hero the UNSC has ever had. I usually tolerate uneven writing, but that scene was especially jarring to me, especially when you consider how much Chief was celebrated at the end of Halo 3.

I am a purest when it comes to halo but the underlying theme behind this story is way better than people give credit to. When a hero becomes bigger than democracy imperialism monarchy dictatorship you can call it a rebellion whatever you want. It has a lot more in-depth than people give it credit. Also crappy halo 5 builds on the story of what happens to that hero.

Not sure if you knew this, but at the end of the game when Chief calls Lasky sir, and Lasky responds by telling Chief it feels odd for him to call him that, is because Lasky was a cadet in training on Circinius-IV at The Corbulo Academy in the Movie Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. Master Chief saved his life on that planet while Lasky was only a Cadet, which I believe was the last time he saw Chief until they met again this game. I could be wrong, about that, but the what I stated before is true. I recommend watching that movie!!

True! Also, “Master Chief” is an enlisted rank- Lasky is an officer. So while it’s customary for enlisted to greet officers with respect, Chief being Chief simply outweighs any rank structure. Officer or not.
