the book seems fantastic, even for me (dm for around 25 years having played from AD&D2e to 5e), if the first 2 chapter are well written it will be game changer for everyone, no one is perfect as a dm, especially when dealing with people outside of your generation, having different references, having tips on how to give your players what they need is huge

In the 2014 DMG, they had examples of how to create new character options like races, subraces and subclasses. I wonder if they'll have the Artificer in the 2024 DMG as an example of how to create new base classes?

51:51 I agree with this sentiment a lot. It might even encourage some forever DMs to be players again because there's a system to where your newbie player might be curious as to how you do what you do or even have a creative idea that might need only a bit of help to expound upon. I haven't DMed for as long as others have, but this is exciting for me. I constantly brag about the Dungeon Master Workshops in both Xanathar's and Tasha's as to me a LOT of their rules were very intuitive and what I use in my games to make downtime interesting, make tool proficiency choices relevant at all stages of social interaction, combat, and exploration, have players use reactions to identify spells being cast from enemy casters and how to strategically work it into combat as a puzzle beyond rolling dice. My favorite chart ever from Tasha's is monster research and how to "tame" them. It takes being a Ranger, Mastermind Rogue, or Battlemaster Fighters to the next level with understanding the classification of monster you throw at them, whether it be from the Monster Manual or homebrew

I hope the adventures really teach you how to set up an encounter. Take 20 bandits spread them through the tower. Put the prisoner in the top room guarded by the gargoyle. In each room decide what the bandits are doing, preparing food, playing cards, sharpening their weapons, watching two bandits fight over a ring one stole from the other ... where is their loot? Here are 4 ways it could be protected pick one. Who is on lookout duty, where are they standing or patrolling? That sort of thing would be so useful for a new DM.

I’m just hoping there’s a section on homebrewing your own monsters, spells, and magic items that builds on what’s in the 2014 DMG. I’m doubtful because I didn’t hear it mentioned and I know that the execs must hate that people can homebrew… The Monster Statistics by CR table is the most referenced thing in my 2014 DMG.
@shadow-faye
@shadow-faye Ай бұрын
the monster statistics by cr table was not very accurate anyway also the first thing they said was that its for dungeon masters to create stuff
@HuckleberryDM
@HuckleberryDM Ай бұрын
@@shadow-faye The CR table is fairly accurate if used properly, but most DMs do not use it properly and many officially published monsters don’t follow it. For example, a werewolf is listed as a CR3 creature when it’s actually a CR2 creature according to the table. On top of that, a DM who uses the table properly knows that werewolves should actually be treated as CR1 creatures if more than half the party has magic/silver attacks and even less if the average party AC is over 15. It’s WotC’s fault for not fully explaining how to use it.

My takeaway from the PHB promos was "I have Tasha's already. Dunno that this is an upgrade." My takeaway from this DMG promo was "Cool. New Greyhawk for the first time in a long time, better organization, & more stuff I can use. Might be worth my money." Would've been nice to see them mention Greyhawk's creator (Gary Gygax, founder of D&D) by name, but that's probably some legalese nonsense about why they didn't.
@TheGameVerse
@TheGameVerse Ай бұрын
Thats funny, Im the exact opposite. I think the new phb is absolutely incredible. Im pretty sceptical how much Ill use the DMG besides the magic items and Bastion rules. Plus the bastion rules sound basically copy and pasted from the playtest, so really just the magic items. Which is the same issue the 2014 dmg has. Im buying it either way so hopefully Im wrong. But really would have liked more focus on practical things like trap building alternate rule options etc. I guess my use of it will live and die based on how big chapter 3 is

@charlesboots6508

@@shadow-faye Because Death Domain Cleric & Oathbreaker Paladin were both subclasses laid out in the 2014 DMG. They were presented as options for creating villainous NPCs, but available for players, with DM approval. I'd have liked to see them lean into that & have each class get a villainous subclass in the DMG; Necromancer Wizard seems like it's crying out for that treatment.

I watched the original vid when it was released and saved your reaction till today and I found myself continually frustrated that I couldn't respond to comments like 'an experienced DB should already know that' so your comments at the end really resonated 100% agree man. The only thing that frustrated me about your vid was the whole Bastion section. As I said, I watched the OG vid last night and through that section I kept thinking 'I'm keen to hear what Duke has to say about this'. And then ... all we had was the mini game. No reaction to a section that is, IMHO, is the nearest thing to something completely new in the DMG and could change the way we play the game in the future

I was skeptical when they first announced all this n ew stuff but reading the new PHB as a forever DM, not bad, much better than previous PHB and i am excited for what is in the Game Master's Guide. Only thing so far i wish they would add (i will home brew it) is more details on hight advantages in the cover mechanics or other ways to gain an upper hand that isn't hiding or flanking.
@PawnOfTheThree
@PawnOfTheThree Ай бұрын
I'll admit I was skeptical when they started the video talking about how they have premade adventures in the book. As a DM I find anything premade to be stifling and restrictive, both to myself and my players. That's just a personal thing, though. The Bastions, or at least the way they described them, give me too much of a knee jerk reaction to video games giving you some kind of Home Base that you have to do "Wizard Chores" at constantly. The WoW Garrison and Dragon Age War Table to name two examples. They could be interesting but I'm not sold. Readability improvements are good, and the DMG needed a lot of clarity in how to use the information it presented, so that's a positive. I'll just say that for now, as a veteran DM of many systems, they didn't sell the book to ME personally. But I can see how a lot of this stuff would be incredibly useful to newer DMs for sure.

As much as this all sounds good, a lot about the 2024 players handbook sounded great but then they dropped the ball on stuff. My biggest gripe is backgrounds. They lost their unique features in place of just giving a predetermined origin feat. When the backgrounds should have a unique feature like in 2014 and should let you pick from 2 origin feats. And backgrounds now give you your starting asi but they went back to the asi can only be given to predetermined stats. The starting asi's should have been left as you can pick whatever you want. Otherwise it ruins the customization. Also I'm really mad about the agonizing blast change. At first it seemed like an amazing change making it so agonizing blast applies to all of your damaging cantrips. But then you realize that was almost a complete lie. Yes it applies to all of a warlocks damaging cantrips... however to get it to apply to all of them you literally need to take it for EVERY cantrip. The whole point of them making the change to apply to all cantrips was to make other cantrips viable on a warlock... but all they did was not make any other cantrips viable. Eldritch blast is the best damage cantrip period with or without agonizing blast. There is almost no point for a warlock to take agonizing blast for any other cantrip than eldritch blast as even with agonizing blast the other cantrips are still weaker than eldritch blast. They should have made it so you take agonizing blast once and then all of your damaging cantrips benefit from it. It would make all the other cantrips viable without making you have to sacrifice massively as a warlock.

Does somebody know if flanking still appear as a optional rule you can use in the dmg24?
@josephbeckett2330
@josephbeckett2330 Ай бұрын
Biggest things I want to see in a DMG, in no particular order: 1.) Optional rules such as Spell Points instead of Spell Slots, or how to make gameplay more lethal 2.) Magic Item prices. Hard Stop. Not, well this item might be anywhere between 3,000 and 15,000 GP. 3.) Some really cool dark character options. The 2014 Death Domain Cleric kinda sucked, but was a good concept. More of this. 4.) Backgrounds that do not suck. 5.) Common items that people actually want. (To be clear, there are a lot of staples that are just not there. Charcoal for quickly copying an engraving or marking dungeon walls as you explore, oars to actually move your rowboat, a fishing pole, or whatever). 6.) Drop, and I know I said "no particular order", but this is #1, drop the fucking wokeness.

No... Guns are not "Artificer", Dude... In the grand scheme of things, especially if we pull the d20 System Artificer from its first, modern, incarnation...the Artificer is a master of *Magic* Items... Naturally being able to create, identify, contain, handle, and use any magic item they come across... its why in 3.5 Eberron, they had all the Item Creation Feats to craft any magic item as Class Features, its why their bonus Item Creation feats allowed them to pick up the 3 Artisan (Extraordinary, Exceptional, Legendary) Feats to reduce their creation cost even more... Its why they had Class Features that, once you had the feat for a Magic Item (Craft Magic Arms & Armour, Craft Wand, Craft Rod, Craft Staff), you could use your "Use Magic Device" skill to use the item...which, since that should be a skill an Artificer is constantly improving, would make it more powerful then casting from your Caster Level! Also... Eberron is not "Guns", I dont care what WotC is doing here...Artificers with Guns are not a thing in Eberron...why would a civilisation that evolved with magic item creation in synergy with itself, create guns? A gun is an uncertain to-hit weapon... Compared to a Crossbow with the same "flame" enchantment, a crossbow fires further, hits harder, is more accurate, and ammunition is more easily made and maintained... A Wand, Rod, or Staff is even better... There is no justification for "guns" in any form or design of such things to be in Eberron, or to be associated with Artificers... A Fighter or Paladin has more in common with firearms, then an Artificer does...It's such a simple, basic idea; given this fantasy-based game that people play. ...Its like Bethesda removing "Mysticism" school from The Elder Scrolls... It was just easier to have it, then to cram those spell-types into other schools...it also takes away from that style of play. Ok... Eberron had some of the most unique, wonderous Magic Items WotC has ever done, and its been down-hill since then... Where's the Golden Dragonshard Discs of Spell-Capture? The Belt of Spare Hand (or Space Hands)? The Cannith Googles that can enhance Darkvision and Low-Light Vision and provide True-Seeing? The Bound-Elemental Armour and Weapons? The Scrollcase of Holding that can pull any Spell Scroll placed within it, storing upto 50 Scrolls? A Wand Bracelet that can store any small-sized item on it? Unless WotC brings stuff like that back...then this is all lip-service, and I don't believe any of this. Uh... Look, the "Great Wheel" is the only unifying aspect of D&D Cosmologies...be it Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, or Eberron...but no two worlds have the same Cosmology! Eberron only has 13 Planes, total; this includes the Plane of Fire, Plane of Ice, and Plane of Dreams...which has no correspondent Plane on THAT chart! They really need to either do another "Manual of the Planes", or make it clear in the DMG section that Planes don't have to correspond to THAT specific diagram...just the Great Wheel design. Ok...im done.
