OHMYGOD HEY!

Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey was perfect! Such warmth in her vocals and characterisation, she absolutely embodies everything we as nerdy shy children love about her. And Revolting Children, both versions, are on my workout playlist because it really gets you going. Revolting Children followed by World Burn from Mean Girls is a powerful workout!

Same vibes but for me it describes sensory overload due to autism, it's the only song I've found that can perfectly describe how I feel, especially "if inside my head, I'm just a bit different from some of my friends" line and the "the noise in my head is incredibly loud" line

11:25 I think it's the most impactful song from the movie, I literally cried watching all the kids sing those words (while thinking about how I used to think like that then I grew up and realized how tough the world was). Beautifully written and performed. Even the producers did a great job mixing! But I couldn't say what the BEST song is from the stage production(s) since I never got to see it 🤷🏽‍♀

I somehow didn't even know Matilda had a musical until that tiktok went viral lol. As somebody who'd never watched or heard the stage production of Matilda before, I absolutely loved 'Still Holding My Hand' and it didn't feel different or out of place one bit. It is honestly one of my favorites along with 'Quiet' and 'Revolting Children'. This movie was so adorable and the soundtrack is amazing. It's fun to go back and watch videos of the original stage production and those kids doing all of that live.. Matilda kids are built differently i swear !!

As an American who only experienced the 1990's film and never knew there was another adaptation, I absolutely loved this movie. The actress who plays Miss Trunchbull is even more terrifying than the original, and i absolutely loved the fact we got the story of the escapologist and acrobat told throughout the film. I even managed to guess the twist within the first 45-ish minutes of the movie, and still had a fun time. 10/10 movie.

Quiet, both the lyrics and instrumentation, remind me of the overwhelm I can experience as an autistic person. It’s one of those songs where if you close your eyes with the volume at it’s highest, it can somewhat replicate the experience. The dynamics and lyrical content just work perfectly.

As someone who has loved this musical for so many years just by the cast recording as well as the special performances and hadn't watched it on stage, seeing all these favourite songs in context was so great! Quiet means so much to me because I have an anxiety disorder and I listen to that song so much and it does calm me down, it's brilliant and so gorgeous, I loved how it was used in the film! I've always wanted to know the context to that song on stage so if it is like how it's in the film then it's so greatly used! School song is another of my favourites because I'm not the best on the alphabet but I can sing that song to help me 😂 When I Grow Up sequence was great, missed the swings BUT we sort of got them at the end of the film 😅 Revolting Children deserves all the viral success it's getting because eventhough I have listened to that song so many times, I went completely barmy in the cinema when I was watching it and singing along (sort of glad it was only me and my mother as well as two other people in the screening so I could be like that but I'm also sad there was only 4 people there) Doing the punches in the air going like "YESSSS GO ON YOU KIDS!!!!" I enjoyed the new song, thought it was beautiful ❤

Somewhere I read that one of the children singing in the Miracle opening is former stage Miss Honey Gina Beck’s daughter (Gina also appears in Miracle, as do other former Honeys Miria Parvin and Lauren Ward) Zeek has been a parrot in the stage version since mid-2019. Stage I think (at least as of last time I saw it in September) the other “word used to describe short people (debatably a slur)” in Rebellion remains. However, I only realised when I saw the lyrics on screen at the singalong version yesterday, that this word is “fiddlers” in the film version. From knowing Minchin’s other work there is no one Minchin sound, but I think Still Holding My Hand has the same vibe as Seeing You in Groundhog Day (but with Matilda tunes interwoven rather than GHD ones)

FIRST! Also I love the new Matilda (and am still very obsessed with the stage musical)! Very excited to watch your new video! Edit: is it just me that noticed the change in lyrics in the hammer. I thought it was very odd. They change it from ‘hammer throwing champion 1969’ to ‘hammer throwing champion 1959’. I’m still wandering why they decided to do that.

I think the stage version was meant to be "today," but I get a sense that the film version is set in a non-specific retro time period (no computers, no mobiles...), so the year must have been adjusted accordingly. The stage is always its own world of suspended reality - when the story leaves the theatre, it needs to be anchored in the real world.

Firstly reaction to the new Into The Woods recording is a MUST! Now onto Matilda where I listened to the recording first so I knew a bit of what I was getting into before I hunted down a theater here in the states to see it before it hits Netflix this week. "Miracle" works in the film so well but the baby voices annoy me so I'll never listen to it on it's own honestly. "When I Grow Up" is easily a favorite track in the show but I missed the swings & visuals of the stage show but it still tugs at my heart so much. I actually teared up while watching the film during "Quiet" because although plenty of songs I love more in the show this moment both on stage & in the film are truly powerful. Which is why it's the song from the film that made my end of year playlist I'm making.

I 100% think that When I Grow Up is the best song. It stands within the show and outside it so well. Not related to the video itself, but if you're looking to react to cast recordings to react to I highly recommend Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. It's obviously not recent but I think you've said that you haven't listened to the whole thing, and I dearly want the show to get more credit and attention. Also, Josh Groban is coming back to Broadway and he's in it so seems appropriate.

Have you seen the video that Minchin released of him singing Still Holding My Hand himself? I love it in his voice actually. I think given that it's a new song compared to all the other ones being well known and loved already, it may take more getting used to- but it is built musically on some of the other songs in Matilda like you said so it fits. The lyrics also pick up from phrases in other matilda songs: 'kicked down the doors' references pathetic (which I know isn't in the film) and the weather imagery about the clouds and 'the sky had turned blindly blue' links to the storm in quiet.

Such fun to watch Mickey enjoying this. I am looking forward to your full spoiler take on the film. The film is playing in Vancouver (Canada) in ONE cinema - I was one of FOUR in the audience - just as well since I laughed and cried through the whole thing. I may need to see it AGAIN because I cannot wait for NETFLIX at Christmas. It's an utterly brilliant adaptation at every level. I will be glad to watch it on repeat with the subtitles on - I wish it could have been a big cinema hit, but it will find its place in every home. I hope it gets the award consideration that it should. I thought the film soundtrack was well produced - I'm glad they included some of the incidental score. I don't miss any of the songs in regard to how they work in the film over the stage; they served a purpose in the stage version (I saw the London production!) I am an OLD man (66) and l always cry at "When I Grow Up" - it so captures the magic of childhood wishes and lost memories. Like any great musical, the songs all serve both character and plot - none are just decorative or forced into the story. Yes, the last song feels a little flat and patched on - they ALWAYS do this with film adaptations so they can get an Oscar nom for the original song (existing songs are ineligible) It's a nice song but it did it add to the movie? " Not a jot!"

First time I heard Revolting Children, I didn’t like it. Now- I love it, but there’s just something missing from it. It’s needs that last burst of energy to push it over the top, and I know what it is. During the Broadway version of the last verse. They’re singing three different things. (1: R-E-V-O-L-T-I-N, 2: Never again will she get the best of me, 3: we’ll be revolting children till our revoltings done) But in the movie version they only sing the two (1: Never again 2: we’ll be revolting children). Still a great song, but they definitely could’ve done better with it.

Technically Lashana Lynch’s first singing was in The Hammer, not When I Grow Up. Also I did think she was incredible, but I had kinda hoped they would have cast Mara Wilson as Miss Honey as that would have been gloriously magnificent for the original Matilda to play Miss Honey- would have been nostalgia overload 😂
