Not about this movie, but when I watched "The Sixth Sense" with a friend in the theater we went to his home afterwards since he lived nearby. We called the lift from the ground floor and when the lift doors opened there was this extremely pale girl (she was around our age, 12) just standing very still by the back corner of the lift, not even looking at us at any point. I didn't understand why she wasn't leaving the lift (she was meant to be coming down, right?). My friend didn't even say hello to her or acknowledge her, like she wasn't there at all. It was spooky as hell for the next half a minute while taking the lift with her... I started to think she may be ghost that only I could see, like the kid in the movie 🤣🤣 As soon as we got off I asked my friend if he saw her, and he said yes. Then I asked him if they had some basement parking level so that would explain her going up with us despite the fact we picked the lift from the ground level. Indeed they had it. Had my friend just being a polite neighbour and said "hello" to the spooky-looking girl, my mind wouldn't have gone wild! 🤣

I was in college when this remake came out, but many months before, some friends and I found a blank VHS tape on campus. We were in film school, and we picked it up and went home to watch it. It was the video footage from this movie. We were like, "Ah - somebody's entrance application film." It was black and white, with no coherent storyline - that was what everybody's entrance application film was like. Months later, in the theater, we were watching The Ring, and when the footage came up, my friends gasped aloud. Turns out, the marketing team left copies of the VHS around different campuses leading up to release of the film. Those were some wild days of marketing virality for films - Blair Witch a few years before really opened the flood gates.
@wren71952 ай бұрын
DAMN that was awesome, I'd never heard of that! Wow... lol WOW. Analog viral marketing, there's, something delightfully nostalgic about the concept. My story's nowhere near as cool, but since you mention Blair Witch: I was watching the movie when it came out in a little small-town theater with VERY few people in it at the time, I was alone (love horror movies and LOVE watching at the cinema) and it was in the latter 3/4s of the film in the dark and I feel this... cold dripping, on the back of my neck? I'm in the back row, I look around, ... nothing. Few minutes later does it again... Heh I'm getting creeped out by the time I realize it's raining outside and The Palace is unholy old, rundown small-town theater. Southwest Ohio's answer to 4D cinema! Leaky roofs! Take care Austin!

You wanna know what’s really creepy? When the DVD of this came out in 2002 it had an Easter egg on it. What Easter eggs USED to be on DVDs was a hidden menu selection that you couldn’t see until you, usually, accidentally selected it without knowing it. By pushing the up, down, left, and right buttons on the remote while on a menu page… Like the one where it just says play/special features/bonus/behind the scenes/etc type of thing. I didn’t know that the DVD had a Easter egg on the main menu. But I accidentally found it because while I sat down to get ready to watch the movie, I pushed the controller button on my remote accidentally and the selection that was on the play icon on the screen disappeared. I hit ‘Enter’ thinking that it would just play the movie, but it played the creepy video that’s in the movie… It played it full screen by itself. Then the screen went black for several seconds and then the VERY loud sound of a phone ringing. Freaked the shit out of me and I didn’t even see the movie yet! As for The Ring 2, I can tell you that I saw it back in the day… But I legitimately cannot remember a single thing about it. And that’s extremely unusual for me. So it was either just that bad or it was too scary. I don’t know. So… Proceed at your own risk. 😈💙💙💙

I'm a man who - _by now_ - is probably past his prime. And I was already a grown man when I saw this movie in cinema. To this day, I still consider it to be the most "goose bumps-inducing" movie, I have ever seen - and I have seen quite a lot of movies. I remember, we _(some friends and I)_ originally intended to watch some other movie, but we couldn't get six connected seats, for the movie we wanted to watch, so we decided to look what else was running. I had priorly read about "The Ring", and remembered it having received some raving reviews, so I proposed twe watch this, instead. All agreed, we bought our tickets and took our seats. Holy Moly...we were not prepared to what we were about to see. Later that night, when I was home alone again, and I needed to take a leak, I switched on all the lights, walked "with quickened haste" through the hall to the bathroom, did my business there _(avoiding to look at any mirrors);_ and then used the same fast pace, to "run" back again to my bedroom, where I locked the door and pulled the sheet up to my chin. Something I had not done since I was a kid. Even weeks after, when I remembered some scene from this movie, shivers would still run down my spine. A masterpiece.

The original novel and Japanese adaptation have more explanation but even then it isn't fully explained. Sadako (Samara in the American version) is psychic and that's it; the sequel novel reveals Sadako's motivation and how she kills through the video. Samara, however, is also malicious for no apparent reason; it isn't really clear if "but I do" means she does want to hurt people or that she hurts people and cannot control it.
@Mrryn2 ай бұрын
If I'm remembering, wasn't the statement by the examiner "But you don't want to hurt people, Samara." And her response: "But I do. And I'm sorry." If anything, it's even more terrifying. It's not that she's sorry because she hurts people unintentionally, like a X-men mutant unable to control her powers. She really does just want to hurt people, and she's only "sorry" because she knows it's not what they want. But she still very much just does want to hurt, and now has just imprinted that desire onto her tape.
@mjm30912 ай бұрын
I think the main implication is that she very much wants to hurt people and the reason why - probably because she can. Sometimes there doesn't need to be a sob story for a villain to be the monster. Sometimes evil is just evil - especially in those older folk tales. And Ring fits perfectly with how the horror in Japanese folklore works out.

Samara had an ability called Nensha, or 'Thoughtagraphy': "the claimed ability to "burn" images from one's mind onto surfaces such as photographic film by parapsychic means" like the 'x-rays' pictures, also the images on the video tape were produced out of her mind. but Samara carried it a bit further by being able to put those images into peoples heads, where should could drive people (or horses) insane, or burn them into the walls, the tree in the barn, or even onto people, like the hand prints. Also, agreed thoroughly that the kid was fantastic in this.

The original Japanese theatrical version of THE RING (there was a Japanese TV movie before this) was a big hit in Japan and generated a lot of international attention. I was able to catch it at a film festival in Hollywood in 1999-2000 and didn’t know anything about the story, and it was one of the best horror movie experiences I’ve had. A couple of years later I attended a preview screening of the American remake and thought the filmmakers did a great job. It was also a lot of fun knowing the major story beats and seeing the audience reactions to them. Shortly before the American THE RING 2 was released, the first (American) film was put out on DVD with a new short film called RINGS which I highly recommend. THE RING 2 was terrible, and the 2017 sequel (not a prequel) - also entitled RINGS - is not much better. There are also several Japanese sequels, and a prequel called RING 0: BIRTHDAY. The sequels are hit and miss. Check out the Japanese version and the RINGS short film if you can find it.

When they say "she never sleeps," it means that Samara was suffering from fatal insomnia. This is a real prion disease; look it up. It is one of the most terrifying diseases you can get. You stop sleeping until you shrivel up and die. Since Samara couldn't sleep, she began to project dream images into her reality, which is how the images got imprinted on the VHS tape. The Ring 2 is honestly not very good. Nowhere near as scary as the first. But I would highly recommend _Ringu._ If you watch the Japanese original, it goes a little deeper into the girl's origins (her name is Sadako in that version).

I believe Samara was invaded by a sea demon her original mother tried to drown her. so parts of her soul was still there that's why she would say odd things. She also had a power called nensha which was hinted by her father that she puts images in your head this ability allows her to burn images onto surfaces like the tree picture on the wall and other things also she can put them in your head hence how she kills her victims. She also made the tape with it. The demon wanted get revenge for being killed I guess... it was going to do bad things anyway. She did the same thing to the horses that's why they committed suicide. Whenever you're killed by her you die of fright. She put so much images into your head... You just passed away. I'm assuming that's why they zoom in on her eyes. Also I had the DVD and the adopted mom hit her over the head with a rock during the smothering part they removed it for some reason... Maybe it was too violent. I don't think they caught on but the adopted mom was barren she couldn't have children. Samara just wanted to be heard that's why you make copies of the tape and keep sending it to people to stop her from killing you but you got to keep passing it around so it doesn't truly stop the curse. I wonder if that's the human soul part of her...😢 I used to be scared of this I love this f****** story I feel sorry for her.

Yeah I saw this when it came out in theaters when I was in high school and it absoultely terrified me. It's hard to scare me too since I've been into horror since I was a kid. Horror back in 2002 was obviously more frightening than now, but the biggest reason why it was so scary was because Japenese horror wasn't a thing that I and a lot of people were used to at the time. That style and type of storytelling. So seeing a movie based off a J-horror was so different and jarring which amplified the terror for me. As well as the editing style which was kind of new thing at the time. It may not feel like it now since we see it a lot these days. I became a huge fan of J-horror since then though after watching Ringu. Also this is one of my top 5 horror films. A lot of the reason being it's one of the very few horror movies to actually scare me. Great reaction! I'm glad ya'll enjoyed it. More than that I'm glad ya'll were scare lol.

You totes should watch the original guys, it's a great film and the sense of dread much stronger, I felt. I can't recall much about its sequel except that the OG version of Noah had a much younger girlfriend (awkward) and she tries to get to the bottom of what happened as she's the poor schmuck who finds him. Alternatively, if you fancy a more chill take on J-horror, I strongly recommend 'Audition'. It's a quirky and slightly problematic tale about a middle aged widower urged by his son and friend to get back into the dating game, with 'hilarious' results.

Definitely watch "Ringu". If you ever decide to dip into the "Ju On" ("The Grudge") series, I would recommend the original first before you watch the American version.

The original "Ju-on: The Curse" scared me so badly I have never dared to watch any of the others in the series. I can still see Kayako coming down the stairs.

I was traumatized by this movie when I first watched (I was a kid and watched alone in an auditorium) and the way this movie creeped me out hahaha Really well done movie and I like that the mystery is captivating enough to not rely only on jumpscares etc. I watched the original one a few years ago and I learned to appreciate both of them, as the stories are different (they are similar but not the same).

I remember watching this in theatres in 2002. I just couldn't get this out of my head for a while. So fucking creepy and well done. I love Japanese horror, they just have a vibe. This is a great american remake.

I saw this in theaters when it came out and it was storming out, well when I got home the power was out and in my room I had this huge entertainment system with a big TV and it sits directly on the wall facing my bed, all night when lightning would flash I would see the reflection off the TV and it was one of the scariest nights because you know your brain makes you think that it's real so I had the illogical thought that the TV was going to turn on during a power outage and it creeped me out all night.

This is a good adaptation, but the original series were great, especially Ringu: Birthday.

There was a mini-sequel about a bunch of college students who watch the Tape then dare each other to see who can wait the longest before sharing the copy. I have seen both THE RING and RINGU. The latter is very different in a lot of ways, with a hint that the girl (who was a teenager btw) named Sadako hinted that maybe she was somehow a product of the sea in some weird mystical way.

“Ringu” and “The Ring” are both good movies but the original Japanese is still superior. The introductory scene in the original IS SO GOOD!

Ringu (1999) is not the original, Ringu is a remake of an earlier tv movie made in 1995

Im not easily freaked out when I watch horrors. I love watching them. Nice when it happens. There was a scene involving a cabin in I think Ringu 3? Pretty sure its a prequel. Been a while since I watched it. But it involves Sadako chasing these 2 women to the cabin. They cower in the corner and one looks up and sees Sadako peaking the corner watching. Then she does this movement that just freaked me out. Was great!

Ringu 0, the prequel/origin story film. That chase sequence just haunted me for years, it's was terrifyingly done. It did not help that after the movie ended, we were kind of just nervously chatting as the credits rolled before turning off the tv. But at that time our dvd player was hooked up to an external surround soundsystem, and after the credits the movie went back to the dvd menu, which featured sadako just creepily laughing. Genuinely terrifying experience. The tv was off, and laughter started playing all around us.

Richard and Anna Morgan both Adopted Samara. So to help you out there are three more movies to the American remake The Ring Two 2005, Rings 2005 (short movie) and than 2017 "Rings" The Original Japanese movies has I believe three movies Ringu with a prequel the the first Ringu called "Ringu "Birthday". I personally loved all the Ring franchise its alot of mystery to Samara/Sadako backstories. I would HIGHLY reccomend you checking out the original japanese franchise.

The Ring 2 in my opinion is pretty good and gives some explanation to where Samara came from. But there probably will still be a lot of questions in the end of the movie. The kid actor though who plays Aiden is ESPECIALLY good in that movie as his role is bigger! The third movie...totally sucks.

I honestly preferred this version over RINGU. 20 years later it still lives in my head and I'm still fascinated by the use of creepy imagery both in the tape and the movie's callbacks to it

The Ring Two obviously takes place after this film. It is directed by the director of Ringu (Hideo Nakata), and I personally don't feel his style translated well to American filmmaking. The movie doesn't really come off as a horror film, or at least not eerie enough in many ways (or the story is not mysterious enough, at least). You mentioned a prequel. The U.S. releases do not have any prequels. The film Rings (2017) takes place after the first two films, and is not only largely disconnected but it also retcons a big thing that The Ring Two reveals. It brings back some of the eeriness, but it is absolutely bludgeoned through its editing and reshoots. I think there is something there in the story that is lost in the editing of it all. There was also a short film called Rings (yes, same name) that acts as a prologue to The Ring Two. If you watch The Ring Two, try and find a way to watch this short right before it. Like, you could literally insert it at the beginning of The Ring Two, and besides the difference in directing/editing style it is immediately connected to the beginning of that story. The Ring is far and away superior to anything that came after it, and I don't think watching any of the other films after destroys what makes this one is great. Nevertheless, I don't think you'll like the other ones nearly as much. It's up to you whether you watch them, but if you choose to I'll watch your reactions!

To me this was more like a supernatural drama than a horror movie, but the tension throughout and the few jumpscares utilized are really done pretty well. It goes full on horror with every sequel, and they're good as well, but the quality starts to dip after the second one.
@jmag5792 ай бұрын
They don’t really explain it but the moral of the story is that Samara is just plain cursed. When horses are committing suicide because of her mere presence says a lot. 😆💫

Of the American remakes of Asian films of the era, this one is the best. I def recommend going down the Asian Horror path: Incredibly prolific director, Takashi Miike's The Happiness Of The Katakuris (2001;) The Japanese Horror film classic, House (1977;) one of the more recent Korean films, Gonjiam Haunted Asylum (2018.) And for more VHS-based Horror, check out the anthology film, V/H/S (2012.)
