A lot of people like it not because it is super scary, but because of the structure of the film. It plays out much like a Noir mystery film. It's like a horror detective film.

It WAS one of the scariest for its time. Not as much now. It was like a very popular FAD of scariness that went up and down pretty fast. Parodies didn’t help either. At the time, the TV scene and the “long black hair” look was NEW iconic figures in horror. But again that died down. I was hoping for a sequel they could add things that would have STAYING power. But Ring 2 failed. Only if I was there to help…

One of my favorite horror movies of all time. I love love how the story built and was more of a mystery than a traditional horror movie with just jumpscares and gore. Those can be great fun too, but I think it made for an overall better story and left the ending and the twist at the end more of a surprise since it didn't have that cashgrab traditional horror movie pace/plot. Side note, Dan is super attractive. The eye contact and the smile? Damn. Looking forward to seeing more of the two of you!
@JackDanReact10 ай бұрын

By the time I was in middle school the sequel had come out so it was still a thing! The chain letters and prank calls from friends are a core memory now but back then they were my worst nightmare. 😅😂

There are so many subliminal images in this film. One example is the caretaker a Shelter Mountain who does the card trick for Rachel. After many failed attempts before she finally leaves the office and he gives it one last go he draws the seven of spades and she finally concedes and says "thats it' dispite it still being wrong. Spades are used to dig (as on a well) and seven is the number of days. It's a movie worth multiple viewings...... Oh and sulphur is the smell you were looking for when it comes to a demonic presence.
@stevegerber194411 ай бұрын
I should add, as a seasoned horror hound, this came out when I was 18 and it still managed to deeply disturb me. And, yes, it's more of a psychological horror/mystery than something full on visceral.

I remember seeing this in the theater with a GREAT audience. The silence was so thick and oppressive, which was perfect for this slower-burn mystery. I think what made the Ring hit different was because it was basically the first of its kind. At the time, horror meant MONSTERS, for example; The Exorcist, Scream, Nightmare on Elm St, or Halloween. This style of slow, creepy, atmospheric, and disturbingly real horror - people were shocked. So yeah, as always when you go back things are never as fresh or novel. We have movies that definitely exceed The Ring in every aspect now so you'll never get that feeling we did when we saw it in theatres.
@soniaiboyako4023Ай бұрын
This gets said a lot about older movies (staples like The Blair Witch Project for instance) but it rarely holds up imo. A lot of the time it's not about the formula itself but really just about taste and expectations. I saw this remake fairly recently, as an adult and i was fully in it tbh.. i was immersed and loved the presentation of it all - i also wasn't trying my hardest to be funny with a mate or for an audience so there's that as well

The movies tone and build up wiuldve been completely ruined if it built up to one big cheesy jumpscare at the end. Or when a scene is scaring the shit out of you without any jumpscare at all, like Samara crawling out of the TV.The way you know a movie is building tension right is when you jump at the more subtle "jumpscares". Like the TV static kicking in after the tape plays. The movie balanced the horror perfectly. Its like people who watch the blair witch project for the first time expecting a jumpscare fest and then being disappointed when it isnt that.

I think it's just magnificent, the way she ignores him, disregards him, and shoos him away as if he were an annoying little gnat. He's her boss!!!! It's just breathtaking, her total lack of concern for anything he might think, say, or do... I guess, plot-wise, that scene is probably important because it shows how Rachel manages to stay obsessively preoccupied with the mystery of the videotape despite having a nine-to-five job.

I have always wondered if the writers intended for us to think that Noah's new girlfriend Beth was supposed to secretly have some connection to Samara. Maybe she IS Samara, or was, years earlier. Just her long black hair made me wonder... Like, maybe she was supposed to be some part of Samara that actually physically escaped from the well, whilst leaving part of her soul behind to become the demonic Samara whom we all know and (don't) love. It might make sense... the young adult Beth would be about the right age for that. When Rachel leaves Noah's apartment at the end, we see Beth standing by the elevator on the ground floor of the building. Maybe she wasn't waiting for the elevator to take her up, but rather had just taken the elevator DOWN from Noah's apartment, after having somehow merged with the spirit of Samara right after Samara killed Noah. Maybe she was just collecting her thoughts, preparing herself for some new unholy onslaught on the world... I know, this is a crazy theory, but if you ever watch Silent Hill you'll understand how my theory might make "sense," in the world of horror movies.
@bumblesquidsmurfgod8304Ай бұрын
PS the sequels ended up taking things in various other directions, but I still think the writers might have had something similar to my theory in mind, when they first made The Ring.

All comedy aside this movie brings to light a good question. Just how far would you go to protect your child? She most certainly would not have won mother of the year, but she did find her kid at the end. There's something to be said for the fact that she was clearly abandoned by her baby daddy, until they needed his help and then he still only showed up long enough to do that. Would he have stuck around if he had lived? I doubt it. But at the end when they found out that it was the copy that protected you, and having somebody else watch it, that's the question. knowing that whomever you show it to will die would you do it to protect your child? Because in the same token you also know that if you don't then your child will die. So somebody is going to die. So what do you do? Personally I would go find me some pedophiles, put them all in a theater and make them watch it. problem solved.

Guys, I'm loving to watch your reacts. And I agree this is not that scary, and that's because it's the American version of the original Japanese movie Ringu. I strongly suggest you guys watch the original version, specially the one that tells Sadako's (Samara's) story. It's called "Ringu: Rebirth"

Came to say this too, surprised with how long it took me to find this comment 😅

I had to stop 22 minutes in because they kept making the same joke every few seconds. She isn’t a terrible mother, not a typical one. I was making my own pbj lunches in fourth grade and I lived around the corner from the school and walked. The amount of people nowadays, when told not to watch a video because of how terrible it is, yet still watch the video, it is not surprising to me that she may not believe the video has powers to kill. Millions of people would be skeptic and watch it
