Oliver Kahn was maybe the best traditional goalkeeper of all time. But then came Manuel Neuer. He took goalkeeping to another level. He has great skills as a goalkeeper and fieldplayer. He combined these skills to reinvent the way to play this position. He is not only a goalkeeper, but also an additional defender. While Kahn was a beast in the goal, Manuel Neuer often prevents the attackers to come close to the goal. Additionally he has the passing skills and the eye to initiate attacks for his own team. If you want to see what i mean, you could watch the video "Manuel Neuer - Masterclass SWEEPER KEEPER Skills"

That 2001 final of Bayern Munchen I accidentally watched as a 10 year old. I remember watching the penalties and hell yea I remember that beast of a man.

usually people who are in goal want to be in goal, but a lot of times you can be forced to be in goal. This barely happens in serious matches, and usually the person in goal likes being there.

When it comes to "the best goalkeeper ever", this is often based on different factors: - their statistics (clean sheats, saves, trophies, and awards) - the types of goals/goal threats that they saved and/or how likely would it be to save them (today it is recognized by forwards as expected goals or xG - how likely would it be for the forward to score a goal from his position (ranging from 0=impossible to score to 1=win always score) - how much their goalkeeping contributed towards the success of the team - what of an impact did their careers have on football goalkeeping as a whole (new playstyles, different ways of defending a show, ways to distribute the ball, etc.) Therefore, any football fan will have different recognitions of who may/should be the best goalkeeper (similar to how they recognize the best defenders, midfielders, strikers, etc.) Popular contenders for the best goalkeeper position are: Oliver Kahn, Lev Yashin, Iker Casillas, David De Gea, Manuel Neuer, Thibaut Courtois, Jan Oblak, Julio Cesar, Rogerio Ceni, Sepp Maier, Gianluigi Buffon, Peter Schmeichel, Gordon Banks, and many more. Yes, Lev Yashin (a goalkeeper from the Soviet Union) won the Balon D'Or in 1963 and is currently still the only goalkeeper to do so. There were also other defensive players that won the Golden Ball - Franz Beckenbauer (Defender - 1972 and 76), Mathias Sammer (Defensive Midfielder - 1996), Fabio Connavaro (Defender - 2006), Of course, the Balon D'Or is more biased towards Midfielders and Forwards (especially today), however, for any football fan, any player (no matter their position) could be their favourite and/or "the best player ever".

In my eyes he's the GOAT goalkeeper but I'm emotionally compromised on that because he was in his prime just when I was growing up so I tended to hero-worship him.

He is my favorite of all times, but according to those who watched football for several decades, the best goalkeeper was called Lev Yashin, the Black Spider, a Soviet keeper considered the absolute legend, he played from 1950 to 1970. Actually the award for the best goalkeeper of each year is called the Lev Yashin award

To answer some of your questions, yes there is a goal keeper who won the Ballon d'Or: Lew Yaschin in 1963. As for Kahn's decline one factor is that he got a hand injury in the 2002 world cup final, kept playing but conceded a goal he would normally have saved. He struggled with depression after the final. He did not made this public at the time kept playing and was still considered one of the best keepers but not quite the best anymore.

May be his failure at the WC final in 2002 cost him his reputation. After that people realized Kahn is just a goalkeeper. Kahn was spectacular. But modern goalkeepers are better in other aspects of the game.

@@hw2508 I agree that modern goal keepers have different strengths, but I doubt his mistake cost him his reputation. The second Ballon d'or voting where he finished in the top three was after the 2002 WC final.

@@patrickdematosribeiro1845 Yeah, but it was his last big tournament. Germany was a disgrace at the 2004 Euro. And at club level Bayern mainly performed at the Bundesliga but not in Europe. Kahn lost his place to Jens Lehmann (Arsenal FC) at the national team. Kahn was considered too old school. Also, when he was not at his best, his extrovert manners seemed totally inappropriate. He was so loud and aggressive, but his performance did not keep up with it. Other goalkeepers were as good shot stoppers and in 1 vs. 1 but better in organizing the defense (especially a new generation of goalies). Also some controversy in his private live raised the question if he was fully concentrated on football. There was a time Kahn was like a mythical figure. But the new generation of strikers was not too scared and the final of the WC 2002 imho was the turning point.

@@hw2508 I completely agree the final was a turning point. However, I would rather attribute this to the effect it had on him mentally than to the effect on his reputation. I think after the world cup his reputation was even better than before despite his mistake in the final.

@@patrickdematosribeiro1845 In public and media opinion the WC02 was a victory for Kahn. He played a fantastic tournament. And then came his mistake. Maybe it was a mental thing, like you said. But I also think that opponents realised that even Kahn could be pressured into mistakes. And more than opponent strikers, other goalkeepers put pressured on him. Jens Lehmann had one invincible season with Arsenal and in Germany Kahns position as the undisputed no. 1 was questioned. Kahn was not prepared for this battle. Not that Lehmann was an easy character. But at the time 2004 - 2006 he was better than Kahn. The WC2006 in Germany put pressure on many players to be in the first team for this tournament and Kahn lost his spot to Lehmann. Partly a political decision. Kahn earned much respect how he behaved during that tournament and after 2006 he concentrated on his club. The time of international successand stellar performances in the CL ended in 2002 or shortly after. Strikers like Ronaldo, Shevchenko etc. still respected him, but they did not fear him like many did before 2002.

Well, I would take a look at the other great goalkeepers of that time. Peter Schmeichel, Gigi Buffon, Edvin van der Sar. Just to name a few. Kahn was feared, but I would not say he was the best. He was one of the best for a couple of years. But he was not much better than all the other. There were a hand full equally good, but with a different style. Ballon dOr: Lev Yashin

Being a good goalie, you have to be born to be, as to be a good goalie you need to have more mental strength as most of the other players, as a goalie, pretty much, you only can loose a game (talking out of experience 😂🤣😭😭) That said, in lower level football or at younger level, you can be the one, who gets pushed in to the goal I believe, most great goalies where in young age, pushed into the goal and found out that this is actually the position to be for them. Talking about Kahn, he was definitely one of the best goalies ever played the position, but there was and are so many awesome goalies around and all great goalies have there own style, means, some are wild, some controlled, some have awesome foot skills and so on. most great goalies stay long time with only one club, so they are icons in those clubs, as at Bayern München, for example, Fans would fight about Kahn, neuer, Meyer or i was a big fan of Jean Marie Pfaff ❤😊 Measured on titles, Kahn was definitely up there but Neuer, Buffon, Casillas, schmeichel and there are heaps more, who also won a lot of titles in their carrier
