@@SetiKt the thing about iruma kun is it is all about having fun. it's like getting serotonin and dopamine medicine, hard to explain with words. Generic characters generic story but it combines them so god damn good. But yeah maybe it should be lower.

Grimgar is criminally underrated. The main cast are part of a larger group that is isekai'd but a strong and aggressive guy called Renji recruits all the top talent and our heroes are the left overs. They do get stronger but they have to pay for every inch of ground they cover and they wind up going to some strange places and pulling off some feats. The anime only covered a small section of the books, its a great story but it can feel quite bleak and dangerous.

I quit reading the books right after the kobold mining arc. I kept feeling that they will just encounter tribulation after tribulation, I can't keep myself reading it knowing full well it will go batshit crazy for everyone, especially since I found them really likeable

Haven't seen Re:Zero but MT is certainly one of the best shows out there. Not only within the isekai genre (or anime for that matter). Writers aren't miraculously better just because of genre. Most things in any genre are shit. If something is top tier. It's top tier in general. I don't watch things based on genre, only based on quality. So i never liked that "it's great, for an isekai". No, it's top tier in general. It blows away most things in that top 10 (i haven't watched all). Some of the animes in that top 10 are mediocre to bad. Devil is a part timer s1 was decent, but it isn't anything mind blowing, a solid SoL pretty much, which is kinda rare i suppose, but still nothing amazing, and it just ended randomly with nothing happening. Haven't seen s2 but haven't heard good things. Overlord... can be decent to good, but S3 completely destroyed it and shat all over the LN with an insulting production, shat out there with 0 care pretty much, S4 wasn't that bad in terms of production(though it skipped an entire volume with 0 indication to viewers, which confused people even more). It had some pretty good parts. But OL gets worse as it goes, because it seriously lacks character development (with 1-2 exceptions of characters that end up dead anyway) and it keeps relying on the same tropes without developing them. The LN itself has been pretty bad in last 2-3 volumes. Last 1 (or 2 i guess, i think it was split in 2) was particularly shit. To the point i'm considering dropping it, and it was the 1st LN i ever bothered to read. So meh. Slime... might be my biggest pet peeve of them all. I dropped it around ep. 12 of s1. It got so bad. It started iffy but kinda fun. Then it had 1 episode (third i think ?) that was very good, and i thought "this has a lot of potential". Then it went downhill fast. Story was crap, convenience writing galore, generic and bland, 5-6+ it was so predictable and extremely mediocre. Big build ups that led to nothing, really illogical things in fights and other places. Knowing how every episode will end before it starts is not fun, especially when there is nothing during the episode itself to make it fun. Like interesting and complex characters. Early on it also had pretty great production values, but that also went away quick. Power fantasy and waifus, is that why people love it ? It is usually things of that nature. I doubt the writing suddenly becomes great later on. Doesn't usually work like that. Mushoku can accomplish more in 1-2 episodes than many animes do in a whole season. One of the most impressive things when i started watching it was how satisfying the pacing is, and the quality of the writing is there to carry it. It does so many things better than animes that specifically focus on only that 1 thing. I only pray that season 2 receives the same level of love and care. (even more for s3 though cus that will be peak...)

@@HiddenStr3ngth Reading all that, I somewhat agree with the genre tiers. To me I can somewhat make a tier for genres, since I watch a lot of romcom and eventho bunch of em have the same trope, cheesy, yada yada yada, I enjoy it eventho I know it's not really that good. So I kinda understand "it's good for a..." but I don't shows in that category that much. Anyways, personally I couldn't get into Overlord, so I won't say anything bout that. Slime isekai I think does get better, the way it goes about is in a way predictable, but I think the charm of slime isekai is Rimuru just wants to build a peaceful nation. Season 2 shows just how hard that image he wanted is, and I think season 2 is where it gets really good. Tho I would agree, some parts of season 1, I didn't enjoy that much. Can't really remember much from season 1 actually. Maybe some fans do love it for the fantasy, I certainly do enjoy Rimuru getting more skills and stuff and him building his nation, the bonds with neighbouring nations. Also personally I'm anime-only for everything, just an fyi. And yeah Mushoku Tensei does an amazing job puting love and care into it's world building and character building. I don't doubt that studio bind will do an amazing job with season 2 as well. I feel like the only complaint people have with the show is Rudeus, but his flaws are what makes the show better. If he was just a generic op protag that had little to no care about his past life and was "perfect" I don't think the story would've hit the same. For ReZero, it is a show I highly recommend if you like Mushoku Tensei. It might not do much world building for the first season, and a lot of character development also happens in season 2, but it's characters are build up and I think it's characters are what personally made me really love ReZero. Some people get annoyed at the MC for being goofy or whatever, but he has a lot of charm and a lot of perseverance. I hate the fact people judge him for being emotional at times, cuz like in reality, if I was in his position, I don't think I could be as sane as he is. But tbf, I will admit, he can be cringey. Eventho ReZero is my favourite anime and Subaru(MC) is my favourite character in anime, he can be cringey

The thing with MT it's exactly that attention and care went into it, and it's clearly seen all the time. It was easy to fuck up the adaptation given that the LNs aren't exactly that simple to begin with. It's a pretty straight forward story at the start, but it slowly builds up a lot of characters and the world is developed with small details rather than it being the focus and if those details were missed the adaptation would kinda fail. Even more, the anime got a 10/10 grade in showing the real core of MT, that being the very human nature of its cast. My single favourite element of MT is the feeling that by, twisting the story a bit, you could see the events from the perspective of any of the main characters, and it would work! Paul's would be a story of redeption and suffering, being an asshole turned decent father turned shell of a man going against entire kingdoms to save people nobody cared about. Eris's story would be that of a noble brat learning that she isn't the centre of the world and goes on a literal shounen protag story to improve herself and be worthy of her crush. Elinalise entire story is her 80s Sword and Sorcery erotic bs that ends up having an actual dramatic backstory and a fuckload of internal complexity. Then there is "Silent" story which is... hella spoiler. But it touches some important isekai tropes. All of these stories are just the secondary characters in Rudeus journey, but they could work on their own, thanks to their humanity and internal logics

I like a lot of the things that were put on the list especially older shows like Escaflowne and 12 Kingdoms. Same can't be said about their ranking, Ascendance of a Bookworm would probably be in my top 5 just because it's one of the few modern isekai where the world doesn't feel like it's just there to be a playground for the main character, looking at you slime and overlord.

12 kingdoms is so underrated. The protagonist is annoying in the beginning but it’s because she was forced out of her life into another world. But she grows on you so much. And there are just so many characters and it’s amazing. Also each of the countries are so interesting.

the thing is overlord is my fav (slime might be top 5, mushoku maybe 3-4, sao 3,4 and sao 2) mostly because of the MC tho. I feel like it all comes down to how much you enjoy the MC as after watching shows similar to ascendance I just instantly get bored as I can't imagine me having as much fun as that MC in comparison to if I were ainz who's wiping out entire ARMIES with spells that cost a sliver of his mana

Idk man I feel like for an isekai I prefer the isekai to be less deep and more basic plot if it just fun/hype to watch rather then having a well written plot with strong themes if I want to watch a proper anime I will not watch an isekai EDIT: of course I wouldn't mind a show to have both like re zero but I much prefer to have the fun/hype rather then the strong theme one if I had to choose one

@@mephisto-- This is the reason why isekai gives mix feeling to people. The challenge in an isekai like overlord or slime isn't necessarily from the actual fights but from the goals they are trying to achieve that a lot of the times happens before or after a fight. Like in slime he is trying to build a nation and keep all of his pupil safe. This however is something that power alone can't achieve. It also helps that in slime he isn't the strongest character, he can beat 90% of all characters but not all of them currently. Which adds to that struggle cuz this means he has to befriend them rather then fight. Most if not all of the actual conventional struggles of beating the villain actually come from the supporting cast which is there to replace the physical aspects of struggle a main character usually needs to face. This is very different and therefore can feel uncomfortable for a lot of people which are used to the old fashion story telling.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is indeed my favorite series of all time. This show is unique but it is not for everyone due to its slow-paced nature. Even though it is a slow-paced show, this series takes its time to build its characters and the world. The characters are well-written and they their own goals and personality. The worldbuilding feels so deep and rich and the world expand as the plot goes on. All of the first three seasons are just the prologue that's why I hope that S4 will be announced since it will focus more on fantasy, action, worldbuilding and adventure. I just hope that they don't censor the dark parts in the 4th season. If it got the Mushoku Tensei treatment, it would be definitely one of the Top 5 isekais out there. Also, the LN of Bookworm is the third highest rated isekai LN on MAL. The anime is also one of the 8 isekais who had an 8+ rating on MAL

The thing about AOB is that it starts out as a kind of a slice of life and then the scope of the story gets larger and larger until it encompasses the entire world and more. The first three SEASONS of the anime just covered the seven volumes of the prologue; the story starts accelerating as our book-reading gremlin starts her reign of terror (for her guardians).

By age thirteen, she has invented tree paper, printing, etc., caused a religious, cultural, and political revolutions and conquered an entire duchy by force. It does take her thirty three light novel volumes to accomplish this.

It's a shame that Mushoku has only been adapted quite recently. Meaning there are only a few seasons out there with most of the early life arc being a bit too weird for most people to actually continue watching the anime let alone going to read the LN or WN. Just have to wait a little bit more until the rest of the more mature rudy arc is adapted for the true mushoku tensei experience.

Even after that, we keep seeing him grow and grow, and I think his potential to be better is something people really shouldn't overlook. It's this broken character that gets a second shot at a new life is what really draws me into MT tbh. I really love shows that gets me enjoy the characters more than the plot (MT's plot is good).

Hot take: I disagree that slavery in Isekai needs to die. It's a realistic part of going to a more primitive medieval fantasy world. I get why people say they don't like it and most of the time it boils down to: "Well, I've seen this specific trope X times and it's extremely predictable" or "It's disgusting and slavery is wrong. (Says modern times simp)" A medieval world is going to have slavery, rape, pillaging etc. That's just part of it. The world isn't interconnected between countries and instead is often in an active war with their neighbors, let alone the people/races across the pond. Then you add in an actual power system via the fantasy aspect and you give this world's inhabitants that much more of a reason to discriminate. A race that can't use magic or comes from a land poor in resources? You'd best believe they'd either be enslaved or wiped out. That's medieval times for you. So, no, I don't think slavery in a medieval fantasy is something that needs to die because it just makes sense. Otherwise, it would have to be a "post-modern" fantasy world and, well, those are typically a lot less fun and require a lot better writing to make it good because the main character isn't coming with knowledge that could advance their civilization, he/she would be the one behind; which immediately tones down the sense of power fantasy most people flock to this genre for.

I don't think people have a problem with slavery existing in isekai (or any fantasy for that matter) as much as they have a problem with how it's depicted and used within a lot of stories. For example, having your generic self-insert protagonist that is consistently framed as a paragon of justice either ignore or actively partake in slave trade to provide the viewer with a cheap power fantasy comes across as pretty trashy. Slavery not being out of place in the setting itself doesn't make a modern day writer depicting said slavery as morally neutral or trying to show how nice of a slave-owner their good-guy protagonist is any less cringe inducing for a lot of people.

A lot of these are good stories (in the light novels or manga) but bad anime. One reason is that a lot of light novels have multiple volumes of prologue before the story really begins. Death March's first three light novel volumes are prologue, which is all that was adapted, leading to an anime who's most memorable scene is a naked loli trying to seduce the protag. Bookworm has seven volumes of prologue, which took three seasons of anime to adapt. etc. etc.

I really liked the anime.. it was hilarious. But the manga I've actually got my issues with it lately. It's not really funny anymore.. there's no tension whatsoever anymore.. For example iruma was supposed to fun his way into the position of demon lord. But then it went more like "iruma is so good everybody else is good now and the entire world is good and he becomes truly shonen powerful"

@@ege920 idk i guess i liked the premise more than the execution which for me was that it takes a more comical than serious approach to the genre and when serious.. well at least somewhat to be taken seriously. The first season of the anime (dont know nothing about the second) had to do the setup for irumas friends and him itself going.. The manga or what comes after this start is butter. Naruto-like friendship and peace solved by fighting but without the hardship. Iruma doesn't suffer. He doesnt have fun either... Cant put it into short words really i suppose. I agree some of the tension is well done and cool but i didnt feel like it was standing out much and going away from its non shonen aproach to the genre was kind of a loss i felt like. But it's very much an enjoyable manga which i follow to this day.

from all the trash isekai I have watched and read. Mushoku Tensei, Re zero are two show that is worth watching because they do not promote escapism. Especially in Mushoku Tensei, Rudeus comes to the new world to solve his old problem. He never forgets his old life. he always regrets it. I feel like 99,9% of Isekai Mcs nowadays are just like: Oopsie I get new life, even though I have family, friend, back then but I regret nothing let's go wild. Like seriously? A character that is already perfect is not enjoyable within the context of a story, Subaru, and ESPECIALLY Rudeus, have flaws they need to _put work in_ to overcome. The reason that something like Redo of a Healer doesn't really work for me is because I get no indication that the main character wants to be anything but a revenge driven psychopath, and sure, you can't really blame him given the context, but I dropped the series just simply because that wasn't interesting to watch.

People who enjoy it are meant to enjoy it vicariously as a stress release or as a fetish. Mushoku Tensei is a work of art with theme, powerful lessons well written characters and is meant as a wake up call to NEETs to touch grass and grow up, live life.

I would love for 12 kingdoms to get a remake with a ending. It’s so good. Also I feel like they could work on pacing on the second half of the series. But I feel like the hand drawn animation ads to the story a lot and how it’s pace is a bit more slow. If there were to be a remake I hope I would have a similar pace and not speed up everything. The rough aspect of hand drawn animation works with the rough story.

I'd say there's been a steady improvement of isekai and in a related sense, reincarnation anime recently. Some of the best shows were from a simple premise like a pharmacist or into a game (the current one I'm watching is literally about a handyman) but they are getting A LOT better focusing on characters and making the MC a lot more than a self insert.

Mushoku deserves top 1 or top 2. Other anime series first group is not in the traditional isekai style but the opposite, the second group is perfectly fine as a fantasy without the isekai element. And Re:Zero is only halfway too, so there's a lot of potential for peak, principally if Tappei delivers the last arc perfectly, unfortunately I kinda doubt that Re:Zero anime is going to get even near the same treatment as Mushoku, S2 already had a pretty bad cut content and no signs of a S3 so far, hopefully another studio picks up at some point, because at this rate Mushoku anime is going to finish before Re:Zero Season 4 airs assuming that it's even going to be a thing.

@@ShotterGames Fun fact: A lot of studio Bind (formed specifically to adapt MT) are ex- studio white fox employees that made Re:Zero that fact that MT has had this incredible adaptation so far is because the pre-production groundwork has been years in the making so far. Re:zero looks really good but it had worse scheduling and more time constraints leading to a (slightly) worse adaptation

no game no life is the type of show where no matter how bad or good it is, it's still such a fun and entertaining show. I do think putting it that high for just season 1 is too much, but as someone who's almost caught up to the light novel, it is so incredibly entertaining to read and i don't really give a shit about the poorer parts of the writing lol.

it deserves a top 5 spot because it has been one of the most watched, loved, and talked about isekais of all time (2.3mil members on mal with 8.09 score). You can argue that mal score and members count are irrelevant to the topic, it's just what I personally think could be referenced when ranking such a list.

Not a bad list. Hopefully with the sheer overflow of Isekai out there one day we'll have some more undisputed classics in ten years or so. There's a lot of trash, but the genre definitely hit a niche in the zeitgeist and isn't going away.
