The four students representing "Footlights College Oxbridge" are Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, and Ben Elton. Laurie, Fry, and Thompson were students together at Cambridge where they all were members of the Footlights, the Cambridge dramatic club. Ben Elton, who did not go to either Cambridge or Oxford, is one of the writers of The Young Ones and one of the most successful television writers in the UK.

The Yellow Pages used to have TV commercials with the tagline "Let your fingers do the walking," meaning anyone could just trail their digit down the telephone listings until they found who/what they wanted, instead of traipsing around town all day on foot. Given Vyvyan's gesture, it probably means an obscene variant of that line.

There was an advert for the Yellow Pages back in the day with the tag line "Let your fingers do the walking." I think the implication here is that when Mary gets drunk she, erm, lets the fellows' fingers do the walking. Vyvyan is doing the "walking fingers" hand gesture from the advert. That seems like such a long time ago! Either you called a place on a landline or visited in person--no other options!

My favorite episode of the Young Ones altogether. 😀 And so many greats of the acting/comedy world among the posh kids. 😀 As a side note, my favorite Ben Elton acting bit is when he plays Verges, the sidekick of the constable Dogberry (played wonderfully by Michael Keaton) in Kenneth Brannaugh's star-studded adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, which also had Brannaugh's then-wife and posh kid from Footlights College Emma Thompson. 😀 And having seen Fry and Laurie together in this episode, I think I'll have to watch my Jeeves and Wooster DVDs again soon.

I would say Michael Keaton was the absolute worst thing in that movie. I like him in other things, but his performance choice was totally off - pointlessly grotesque and not delivered in a funny way. I can't help thinking that Ben Elton would have played the part much better.

One of the writers explained the fifth housemate. The real reason for this and other easter eggs was because they knew this would be on VHS, and they wanted people to have stuff to look for. In story, she said they figured that this was actually a girl who showed up for a party, passed out, and forgot to ever go home. Sadly she's not in season 2, so I guess she went home.

@@NecramoniumVideo There seems to be conflicting info, and much of it second hand to boot. I'm citing the version of the story supposedly told by co-writer Lise Mayer. There are rumors that this housemate was Mayer herself, who was Rik Mayall's GF at the time. It does make sense that it would be a member of staff who just happens to be on hand anyway. Nigel Planer claims he didn't even know about this person when they were filming, and yet he posed for a publicity shot that shows all FIVE of them together.

Thanks for an excellent reaction to the first episode of this second season. There are lots of funny bits in this, so hard to tell what the person was specifically referring to - but you obviously found your favourite moment of this episode. The thing about the 5th housemate is a kind of fan theory because in one episode during the first season you can see someone randomnly standing in the background of one scene - but The Young Ones was full of weirdness so it's not that out of place! After watching this series, it may be worth checking out Living Doll - By Cliff Richard & The Young Ones. Originally a hit for Cliff Richard (as was the theme tune to this), he re-did it with them in 1986. It went on to become a number 1 if I recall.

The "yellow pages" joke is that the yellow pages (phone directory) had a slogan "let the fingers do the walking" meaning instead of going to the store for information, use your fingers to flip through pages and call the business instead. The slogan was appropriate because flipping through the thin pages of the phone book did resemble walking fingers. In that era there were also insults about women of low character "sleeping their way through the phone book" because everyone in the city was listed there. As for how the girl got the nickname "yellow pages" for things she did at parties while Vivian was mimicking the finger walking gesture you can draw your own conclusions.
