Hi Aspyn , I study biochemistry and can tell you the “enzyme” thing is likely not true. When a vegan eats cheese after many years of not consuming it, the enzyme to digest lactose (called Beta-galactosidase) wasn’t being made prior to eating cheese because it wasn’t necessary, so the gene that makes that protein was “silenced.” But, upon repeated exposure, the vegan’s body will be reminded to make that enzyme because now there is a reason to make it and the gene will be turned “on” and you will have that enzyme. This is assuming the vegan was never lactose intolerant to begin with. It is similar with meat. Meat is mostly protein, which is strings of amino acids, and our body is constantly breaking down our own proteins every day. So if there were such an enzyme, unless the baby is born without it to begin with, it shouldn’t be a problem, because the “instructions” to make that protein will be within the genome of your baby from the start! Hope this helps and of course it is your choice :)

Aspyn, I like that you said, "I wouldn't want to make that choice for her" in regards to the food she'll it. Not saying that being vegetarian is bad or that you'd be a bad mom if you did have her eat that way BUT I think it's really awesome that you're taking into consideration what SHE will want to eat. I'm sure you'll encourage her to eat healthy foods but I think that's awesome you have that mindset going into parenting!

the plant based question is so true! i stopped eating diary for years, well before it became trendy and i had yogurt for the first time... i was the worst kind of sick for 3 days. went to the hospital... they said my body stopped developing the appropriate enzymes to digest dairy cultures.... so now even though i dont like dairy, but have no plans on going vegan i still eat some fresh milk based products just so i dont lose them in case i accidentally do eat something with diary and it doesnt make me sick. nothings worth than eating some and not knowing it has dairy in it and then wondering why you feel ill.

Yes that is true. When a baby starts to eat solid food the body begins to develop enzymes that break it down. If the child isnt fed a certain type of food, for example meat, the body will not develop enzymes in order to break it down. The child usually results in having an allergic reaction, stomach ache, constipation, etc due to not being fed meat as a baby. It is highly recommended for parents to feed their child ever aspect of food so the body gets used to it being in their system❤️

I’m a lifelong vegetarian (23 years old now) and I love it. It’s true, if I eat meat now I will get sick. But I also absorb vitamins differently too. I have never had supplements and I don’t eat perfectly and I’ve also never had any deficiencies

Six of of my cousins have never had meat before. My aunt and uncle are vegetarians. I'm not sure about this enzyme but they have no interest in eating meat now that they're older and they can if they want to. They also don't really ever get sick. Never had the flu or stomach bugs. At the most they have had colds.

Hey! My parents became vegetarians in 1984. My mom was a vegetarian when she was pregnant with me (and before me my twin brothers), and raised us as vegetarians. My one brother eats some meat now with his wife and family. I think it’s fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

That is true about the meat! And if she goes out with friends later in life and has a cheeseburger for the first time she’ll get very sick. Something similar happens when you stop eating dairy for a while and then go back to having it again

The thing Aspyn said about not developing an enzyme to digest meat if you don’t give it to your child is completely true actually! Your body is working hard 24/7 to digest everything you eat, so if you’re not eating meat then your body will not waste energy producing that enzyme that you DON’T need. I mean, obviously if later down her life she wanted to start eating meat it’s possible, but it would have to be a slow transition so her body wouldn’t freak out and can activate the production of said enzyme. The more you know! 😊

I never ate meat until my late 20's (last 6-12months).... but I did grow up as a peskatarian so I did fish so maybe that enzyme was developed through eating fish? As I have no problem with meat just finding what I like to eat as taste etc.

That is true about the enzyme. My boss was vegetarian and he got really sick and the surgeon asked him to start eating grilled chicken or salmon once a week for that enzyme.

Get a german shepherd, best dogs ever! I’ve had two in my 18 years of life and they were/ are the best dogs i’ve ever had! Also if you want a big dog, gentle and very lazy that doesn’t shed a lot, get a lurcher ( greyhounds, salukis, whippets etc...)

The not eating meat thing is true! They can develop a hyper sensitivity to meat so be sure to expose your kid to a variety of foods!

There is no way that that plant-based diet thing is true (that you make the decision for the baby by raising them vegetarian), cuz for example, my dad and all of his 5 siblings were raised vegetarian and they all eat meat now. My dad eats even more meat than I do. So I don’t think that theory is true at all.

It is true about the food yes. If you've never had meat if you do decide to try when you're older you get SO SICK. It'd be best to let them have a bit here and there to make sure she can process it properly x
