My folks and I saw this in the theater. Ostensibly, it was for my Dad's birthday. In reality, I think it was for me, since I was absolutely obsessed with military jets. I was on the edge of my seat, for most of the movie. The next day, Dad woke me up before dawn, and took me to Naval Air Station Oceana, in Virginia Beach. That's the Master Jet Base for the East Coast, and Dad was stationed there. On his way to work, he dropped me off on the back porch of the Air Operations building, at the flight line. He gave me a pocketful of change, and a disposable camera. I spent the day watching F-14's, A-4's, F-18's and A-6's flying, up close and personal. I even met a few pilots, and scored a few squadron patches. One of the very best memories of my entire life!

A6s? back in the good old days. My dad was retired Army, surface to Air missiles. When he needed his medical work done in his civilian life we drove 3 hours to an Air Base as it was closest. I went with one time and sat outside medical reading a book watching B52s cycle through touch and goes. Suddenly I heard an engine that sounded way different from the usual Buff's Pratt Whitney's. I got my first sighting of an A10. They were up practicing for an air show that was later that week. I saw me first ever cobra move. Ever since the A10 has been my favorite plane. This was just before the Warthogs entered service.

For one of the scenes his plane went into a spin to create footage for the F14 flatspin. His last words were "I have a real problem." His plane crashed into the sea and pilot and plane were never recovered. I've been a fan of his before Top Gun. RIP.

Witness is a great movie, really underrated IMO. That director, Peter Weir, really likes doing those fish out of water movies (like Dr Maturin in Master and Commander, another Wier movie, being the odd man out among all those Navy guys, the O'Brien books are definitely worth a read) except that this time it's the big city guy being the fish out of water among the Amish, a bit of a table turn. There is something timeless about some scenes in his movie, one could be watching it at any time over any number of centuries, like the scene where the cats are fighting in the barnyard and Ford's character is sitting there watching that wind driven rocking pump on the well or in Master and Commander with the long shot of all those sailors climbing up and down that rigging at change of watch. I get, between Top Gun and A Few Good Men, the idea that Tom Cruise has some emotional attachment to the navy in an outsider looking in sort of fascination with it all. Meg Ryan and her musician boyfriend Mellencamp are a pair of leftist crapweasels.

Goose is a RIO or Radar Intercept Operator, he sits in the back and operates the F14 Tomcat's radar and radios and long range weapons and whatnot. Basically Goose's job is to figure out where the bad guys are in the sky and then tell Maverick who is "doing the pilot sh*t" what direction, altitude and whatnot is best in order to intercept those "unknown" called "bogies" and unalive them if they indeed turn out to be bad guys. When it comes to his death it represents a real "problem" with the F14 in the sense that sometimes the canopy would not be far enough away from the aircraft by the time the seats got yeeted out of the aircraft and crewmen ended up slamming into it on their way out, killing them. The "flat spin" is also something that the F14 was prone to when an engine malfunctioned, engines on those were so far apart that when you lost one the plane would be thrown into a spin.
@Cauldronb0rn10 ай бұрын
The RIO is also in charge of countermeasures and ecm. That problem with the ejection seats was discovered and fixed rather quickly. The RWR sounds are also not accurate in this movie, nor are the HUD that shows a targeting reticle. The movie also shows the RIOs grabbing a bar in front of them to help them turn in their seat to look around. While this is accurate the bar is actually much closer to the back of the pilots seat and also has controls for launching countermeasures on either side of it. If they tried to show it as it is in real life the camera would have to be where the pilots seat is.

These are fighter aircraft, fighter jets, or usually just fighters. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat that Maverick flew was known as a fighter-interceptor, which describes its usual role. Its main job was to defend the fleet from incoming threats like bombers, cruise missiles, or enemy fighters, and in that capacity it was an interceptor--it intercepted and shot down airborne threats. To that end, it was a large fighter that often carried large, long-range missiles (not seen in the movie), and a large, long-range radar. It was also a fighter because it was agile, despite its size, and can "dogfight" or maneuver to shoot down enemy fighters at close range, as well. In general, this kind of aircraft is just called fighter, whatever its main duties might be. And some could perform many roles.

There's a bit of fighter pilot lingo here. And it's not just slang - the point is to avoid any confusion. And so - "bogey" is a plane of unknown status. "Bandit" would mean a plane confirmed hostile. When spotting an enemy plane, you'd call out "tally", or "no joy" if you have no visual. And regarding 11:55 - the "hard deck" represents ground. You are literally asking the ground to be flexible, and move out of the way. Another way to look at it - you may have a plane just outside a country's airspace, and crossing back into it, so you end up shooting down another country's plane in their own airspace - a good way to start a war (although if you've been given "weapons free", all bets are off at that point).
@Philistine4710 ай бұрын
Exactly. The "hard deck" is several thousand feet above ground level in the exercise to give a margin for safety if something goes wrong. It's not just rules for the sake of rules, which is something the film arguably ought to have explained.

MiG is short for Mikoyan-Gurevich the Soviet design bureau that specialized in designing fighters for the Soviet Union. Soviet design bureaus tend to be named after their chief designer (or designers in this case) in the same way that Boeing is named after William Boeing and Douglas was named after Donald Douglas. The plane Maverick flew was the Grumman F-14, btw, which was designed and built by the Grumman company... named after their founder, Leroy Grumman. There were other designers such as Sukhoi, that made 'fighter type' aircraft but up to the 80s, all major Soviet fighters were MiG designs. In Korea, they fought Mig-15s, in Vietnam: Mig-17s, Mig-19s, and Mig-21s. Hence the generic term of 'MiG' for a Soviet fighter. One big difference between Western (US,UK,etc) and Soviet aviation is in the west, the same company usually designs and builds the aircraft while in the Soviet Union, the designer would only design and build the first few prototypes.... production would be handed over to a state-owned production facility rather than being performed by the designer's bureau. If that didn't put you to sleep, nothing will. I'll shut up now....

Jester and Viper are instructors at the school they play the "bad guys" in the engagement. Both Jester and Viper were in A-6 Skyhawks which were at that time used as adversary aircraft while Maverick and the other students were in the F-14. Another adversary aircraft that is still used today is the F5 which plays the role of the actual enemy aircraft both in the beginning and end of the movie.

Back in the 90s I was stationed in San Diego with the U.S. Navy. At that time Top Gun was still held at Coronado across the Bay from S.D. It doesn't matter which Navy Base you go to in that area there is a good chance if there is a TV Top Gun is playing. I've probably seen Top Gun more than 100 times while I was there.

TOPGUN was based out of NAS Miramar until 96, when it was transferred to the Marines and became MCAS Miramar, but they probably utilized Naval Base Coronado as well. In 96, it was moved to NAS Fallon in Nevada.

Tom Cruise was in several very good and successful movies before this one, but Top Gun was the movie that really made him a household name. Probably the most notable of his early movies would be Taps (1981), The Outsiders (1983), Risky Business (1983), and All the Right Moves (1983). As for Val Kilmer, my favorite movie with him is called The Saint and it's a movie I think you'd really enjoy.

MIG Short for Mikoyan Gurevich The Russian manufacturer of those aircraft. I loved this reaction video. You were kind of stuck on Mavericks father not being dead. Goose dying was part of the 80's formula where the lead character has to overcome the death of someone close to grow into their super hero role. A fun role for Val Kilmer is in a movie called Real Genius. Goose, Anthony Edwards played a nerd in Revenge Of The Nerds. Both are fun movies to watch.

What you see happening on the aircraft carrier, involves Arresting gear and the catapult. Arresting gear stops the planes with the tailhook. The catapult launches the aircraft. FYI, my MOS in the US Marine Corps was very close to this. Expeditionary Airfield Equipment Technician. Our equipment was land-based and used for both emergency landings and also training pilots to use the arresting gear, prior to rotation to a carrier.

In the mid-late 1970s, a whole new generation of fighter jets were built for the US armed forces. The Air Force got the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon (a single seat, single engine dogfighter) & the McDonnel-Douglas F-15 Eagle (a single seat, twin engine, air superiority fighter - more missiles). The Navy got the Grumman F-14 Tomcat (a twin engine, 2 seater fighter, with variable sweep wings and the most advanced weapons system available at the time). The price tags went for $13-15 million for each F-16 in the beginning to over $33 million for each F-14. Navy planes were designed for redundancy, 2 engines, 2 crew, etc. and the Phoenix guided missile system onboard could supposedly track and kill 6 moving targets simultaneously. The swiveling wings allowed for wing forward for take-offs, cruising and landing since more surface area was exposed and greater lift was provided at lower speeds. As it F-14 gained altitude and speed, the wings would swivel back to reduce the surface area and reduce drag so it could go fully supersonic when needed.

My younger brother got into some intense arguments in the 80s regarding F-14 vs F-15. Using dad's combat aircraft coffee table book for reference. I always preferred the F-15. But the Tomcat is cool looking.
@neutchain783810 ай бұрын
It is a beautiful aircraft but the 15 is much superior. It's significantly more agile, better dogfighter, can pull more Gs for longer. The Tomcat is limited to 6.5G but they often went above that. .

A "wingman" is actually another pilot that flies another aircraft and serves as a sort of "partner". Some planes, like the F-14s in this movie, are 2 seaters and have a pilot as well as a RIO or "Radar Intercept Officer" to help out. The A-6 were another type with crews of 2. In that case the pilot flew with a BN or "bomber/navigator".

@rbrtck10 ай бұрын
Actually, a wingman is the pilot who is paired up with you, if you were a pilot--you in your plane and him/her in their separate plane. The guys who ride in the back, who are sometimes called GIB for "Guy In Back", were called RIOs in the USN at that time, or Radar Intercept Officer. The USAF have long called then WSOs (Weapon Systems Officer, pronounced "wizzo"), and the USN apparently switched to that term some years ago.

MiG is a Soviet military fighter aircraft produced by a design bureau Mikoyan and Gurevich. So you take the first letter of each M and G. Word "and" is pronounced "eee" in Russian so English speakers just called it MiG.
@jaquesshugossen939810 ай бұрын
The music is part of what makes the movie great, you also have good hard fast fighter action, there is romance and drama, the loss of Goose which, I think is there, not to upset people in a grand way, but to show that actions have consequences and one needs to take responsability for them, and is part of Maverick's character arc. Tom Cruise had done Legend plus the ones listed in comments before "Top Gun". Top Gun is a very beloved film with real aurcraft works, just like "The Final Countdown", another fighter film with F-14's.
@billbabcock183310 ай бұрын
In general, in a side by side seating configuration the pilot is in the left seat in an airplane, or in the right seat in a helicopter. In a tandem (one in front of the other) seating configuration, the pilot is almost always in the front. Goose was not a pilot, he was the RIO (Radio Intercept Officer) sometimes called GIB (Guy In Back). Goose was killed when engine failure put the plane in a flat spin, where the plane is spinning out of control. Think of a Frisbee flying flat, but losing altitude, with no way of regaining control.
@stevo72882210 ай бұрын
The star of this movie is the F-14 Tomcat. The MIG's in this movie are the Northrop F-5 fighter. They are a lot more manoeuvrable than an F-14 and the predecessor of the F-18 Hornet. The actual engagement the movie fight was based upon was against two Libyan MIG-23 aircraft over the Mediterranean.
