I was serving in the Navy in the 80's and overseas when this movie came out, as part of a carrier battlegroup; the USS Carl Vinson. one day we were overflown, buzzed by an F-14 and it did a barrel roll after. we lost our minds, pumping our fists in the air and wishing we were Tom Cruise! not to be self-serving here, but I make a lot of lame lip-sync videos and post them on KZbin. i recorded Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone, and I told a little of my story while I served in it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoWYcmSeebCqa8U

The special effects department that worked on Top Gun did such an amazing job with their use of miniatures (both planes and missiles) that the U.S. Navy came down on director Tony Scott like a ton of bricks before conducting a preliminary investigation of their own...the Navy gave Top Gun's filmmakers permission to have 2 missiles actually live fired in camera, and they accused Tony Scott of filming more than 2 when they saw the final cut. Scott assured them that, indeed, only 2 of the missile shots in the movie were live and the rest done with miniatures. After a short investigation the Navy's findings backed up Scott's statements. You know your FX department is top tier when they fool even the Navy with their dogfighting footage 🤘

@@beekarinsaan While real F-14's and F-5's were providing most of the action during the filming, dozens of special-effects experts who work in San Francisco for Colossal Films, a company wryly named to reflect its founding in a tiny garage, were simulating a pivotal crash in the movie and much of the air-to-air combat using models and animation. The work was supervised by Gary Gutierrez, a special-effects wizard who earned his reputation in ''The Right Stuff,'' a movie about flying in which virtually no real aircraft, only models, appeared. For ''Top Gun,'' Mr. Gutierrez rented a parcel of bare land across the bay in Oakland and photographed models of the jet fighters, usually hung by a steel wire, flying through the sky, firing their weapons and exploding in a ball of flames against a natural sky and man-made clouds produced with a fogging agent left over from World War II, when it was stockpiled for use in camouflaging of Navy PT boats. ''The goal is to make the real blend seamlessly into the fake,'' Mr. Gutierrez said. ''All movie-making is illusion-making. Special effects is part of it.'' The navy jets used in this film were: “F-14 Tomcat” - hero planes “A-4 Skyhawk” - Topgun instructors “F-5 Tiger” - stand in for MiG-28s There’s no such thing as a MiG-28 in real life. All of the MiGs are odd numbers. There is a MiG-29, but it was not used in this film. MiGs are flown by Russians, but also many eastern block (former Soviet) countries like Ukraine. The enemy was never identified by nationality in this film (on purpose) as this was released during the height of the Cold War. They are merely referred to as “the enemy” to keep it ambiguous. The fact that they are flying MiGs kind of gives you an idea of who it might be though. The F-14D “Super Tomcat”, the last variant of the fighter was retired a number of years ago; it was replaced by the F-18E/F Super Hornet. The F-16 “Fighting Falcon” (also called the Viper) is an Air Force fighter that is still very much in service. But it was never used in the Navy, and is not capable of a carrier landing. The most modern (5th generation) fighter jets we have are the F-22 “Raptor” (Air Force), and the F-35 “Lightning II” (Joint Strike Fighter). The 3 different variants of the F-35 are all meant to eventually replace older aircraft. The F-35A will replace the Air Force F-16, the F-35B (which is capable of short take-off/vertical landing) will replace the Marine Corps AV8B-Harrier II, and the F-35C (which is capable of carrier take off and landing) will replace the older Navy F-18C. Side note: I am a retired Air Force MSgt, who was once an enlisted personnel manager at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB California. Every pilot at the school grew up watching this movie and for half of them this movie was the reason they became a fighter pilot (and later test pilot). This is true for all of the Naval exchange students AND the Air Force pilots as well (even though it’s a Navy movie).

You guys are the only reactors who focused on the iconic volleyball scene and I say rightly so. That is the F-14 Tomcat debuted in the 1960s and served until the 2000s. Nowadays, the navy uses the F-18 Hornet/Super Hornet. The fighter jet 'Mig-28' is actually an F-5 Freedom Fighter/Tiger from the 70s which was later updated in the 80s, renamed the F-20 Tigershark.

Although the Navy still has Block III Super Hornets on the production line and currently plans to upgrade Block II planes to Block III through 2033, F-35Bs were flown off the U.S.S. Essex starting in July of 2018 and the Vinson now has a squadron of F-35s since August of 2021 as well as Super-Hornets.

They were using F-16s at the time, but not on aircraft carriers, for those they had the F-18 Tomcats, which they're flying in this movie. For the carriers you need planes that are designed to be able to take off and land on them. As for the MiGs, a lot of countries had them. In fact, there was an incident 3 years after this movie, in which two US Tomcats took out two MiGs from Libya.

Crazy thing is that these ultra cool F14 Tomcats wouldn't stand a chance against an F22. The F22 would shoot the F14 out of the sky before the F14 even knew what shot it. Technology advances over the past 40 years have been amazing.

I feel like Maverick really portrayes an overconfident child in many ways in this movie. He is talented, good-looking and everything always went right for him that way. Until it didn't, and he experienced true personal loss for the first time. It's almost like he thought it would never happen. Like a child who is so sure of himself, that there is nothing that can harm him.

Growing up in the 1980s like I did, you don't skip out on what this film meant to the culture. Months earlier, there was a film of similar content called Iron Eagle (loosely based on true events) that had spawned 3 sequels. But Top Gun would eventually outrun, outgross and overshadow that film. Cruise as an leading man on his A-game with a great supporting cast. The late, great director Tony Scott (brother of Ridley Scott) with one of his first blockbusters features. Everybody wanted to be a fighter pilot after seeing this and the impact on recruitment was unbelievable. No.1 film of 1986, soundtrack goes platinum and the song "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin won an Oscar & Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Top Gun is a video-game franchise. 18 games, each on various systems. The final game was Top Gun:Hard Lock on PS3 and it was so fun. Top Gun was in limited re-release for IMAX theatres only in 2013 and it was just as good the second time. Top Gun:Maverick will be available on Paramount plus around late summer and you'll definitely love that one.

We all knew that it was a US-Military financed propaganda production, but it was the coolest movie I`ve ever watched to that date. Many belittled its quality by describing it as soapy. But I didn`t care. I loved this movie, and I still do. It has a special place in my life :) For years it has definitely been my No.1 feel-good movie. When we watched it in the cinema, I totally fell in love with Tom Cruise. I`ve watched the movie more than 50 times (it was playing in the background while I was working on other things.), and I loved the soundtrack. I know I`m one year late but I love your reaction, guys (as always). Sending greetings and lots of sunshine🌞from Slovenia😊

I absolutely love this movie. It is 1 of those movies that no matter when it is on TV, I gotta stop channel surfing and watch it. Also, no matter how many times I've seen this (and it is got to be over thousands of times), I still get an adrenaline rush and still cry over Goose. What is even more awesome is that first reactions to the sequel are all saying it is better than the original, which says a lot. You ever see Day of Thunder? Another early Tom Cruise movie I love that is like Top Gun with Nascar. Many early Tom Cruise movies, except those 2 movies and a few others, were mostly all drama (but great drama) & most of his later stuff is action. The older the dude gets, the crazier his stunts seem to get. I love all his movies. Dude is a great actor and knows how to give fans what they want.

I like how you talk about the shots… the scenery, the lighting etc. One of my favourite trivia pieces for Top Gun is for the opening scene, filmed aboard the carrier USS Enterprise, they filmed against the sunrise, but because Enterprise was on operational duty it had to adjust its course, losing the lighting. Director Tony Scott asked for the ship to be turned back for a short period so he could get more footage against the sunrise, but was told by the ship’s commander that it would cost $25k. Scott promptly pulled out his personal chequebook and wrote one out on the spot. He revealed in a later interview that he made sure that the cheque bounced… I don’t know if he was joking or serious 😂 You caught on very quickly what happened in the accident that cost Goose’s life. Ejections are brutal enough on the body when they are clean, but as you rightly said, he was fired hard into the canopy. Official cause of death was a broken neck, but I’d imagine there were other injuries just as fatal (fractured skull, spinal compression). Sadly this is something that happened in real life, an issue developed with the ejection sequence during a flat spin. The spin causes an area of zero pressure over the surface of the plane, this causes the canopy to briefly hover over the cockpit instead of clearing away. The sequence is very rapid (barely a second) - canopy > RIO seat > pilot seat. The canopy becomes an obstruction for the RIO, who is now effectively being rocket launched into the canopy. This prompted a design review, and F-14s would be given an emergency canopy jettison separate to the ejection sequence. They would also be given new engines (General Electric F110) to stop the compressor stall that the Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines suffered from that induced the flat spin (similar to what was depicted in the movie). It’s a shame loss of life was suffered in order to discover these flaws. Speaking of ‘loss of life’, aerial stunt cameraman Art Scholl lost his life during filming the flat spin scene - he lost control of his camera plane, which disappeared into the Pacific… neither the plane or Scholl’s body were ever recovered. There’s a message at the end of the credits dedicating the movie to his memory.

One of the lost stories from this movie is that Art Scholl, the pilot who filmed the spin used in the fictional goose's death died while filming the scheme when his Pitts S-2 camera plane failed to recover from the spin.

The bit where Maverick & Charlie are in the lift was done after & both Tom & Kelly were working on other films. She had dyed her hair, hence the baseball cap. I think I read somewhere that US Navy weren’t keen straight away, but eventually came around. There is scope for a 3rd, but it would have to be a prequel to show Maverick’s dad, possibly Maverick & Goose’s early times.

Congrats dudes for being the first and only people on KZbin who actually comprehend the warfare aspect of this film. So frustrating watching other people who are clueless as to who is fighting who etc. When this came out in '86, everyone on earth knew it was about the Cold War. Some people watching the opening scene where the pilot is clearly distressed from facing a near death experience thought he was just busting to go to the toilet or something LOL. Back in '86, it wouldn't have really mattered if the adversary on the day was Chinese or Soviet - they were both very close communist allies at the time that would have gone into global conflict together and both had heaps of nukes. At the time though, most people would generally assume they were Soviet, even though it was not expressly communicated. China was still very poor at that stage and closed off from the rest of the world - they had to rely on Russia to supply a lot of their weaponry. They were a bit like North Korea as it continues to be now with lots of infantry but fewer expensive high tech air, sea and land assets. Even into the 90's after the Berlin Wall fell, foreigners were forbidden to enter China without very rare approval for business purposes and set restrictions, 24 hour chaperone and surveillance. Some people still forget that it is communist and it is not a joke.

I'm so glad y'all really liked this movie! Watching it the weekend it opened was great! I grew up with my late Father being in the AF, he was a Flight Mechanic, worked on the planes basically. At one point we did live near Riverside CA., he worked at March AFB. Boone of the very best things for me about this movie is just watching the Jets just as they take off, then all the maneuvers that were done in the movie. No CGI stuff. I've always loved Jets since I was a kid, my Father took me a few times to the hangers to see what planes they were working on. I've also been to a few Air Shows as an adult here in Savannah, at the base I was actually born on lol. Anyways, so many up and coming young actors in TG, like Meg Ryan! The best thing about that volleyball scene was Rick Rossivitch(?). 😁
