Growing up Irish I am delighted to enjoy VP take this "highway Man" ballad and drinking song back to it's Irish roots. Whack means a drink or a shot. A drink for my father would be “Whack for my Daddio, there's whiskey in the jarro I prefer the storytelling concept of ethnic ballads over harsh instruments overpowering the story. VP left me wanting to listen to it over and over again. It did not have an angry - yelling at me attitude and allowed me to enjoy all the layers of the offering. Not "trashing" other styles just my preferred taste. Excellent offering from VP and great reaction from you.

There's so much to love in ths! Something that really struck me is how good Cesar sounds in his lower register in the last few runs of mush-a-rain etc. Really makes the harmony.

Beautiful rendering of an old Irish pub time. I first heard it sung by The Irish Rovers about 50 years ago, but this version is just so rich in sound there's almost no comparison. The more I listen the more I enjoy it. Thanks for your very appreciative reaction!

Wonderful reaction! Now, this is indeed some contrast to their latest songs, but then... this is so beautifully done, it's just pure fun. I think the harmonies carry along the song like a horse trotting, or maybe smoothly galoping down the street in a slow travelling tempo - to stay in tune with the song. I've been singing this all day. :)

This is a very old Irish song back to early to mid 1600s. My Irish great-uncle sang this 60 some yrs ago. I thought he was singing to me, but probably to my dad who had a bar built in the living room, so Uncle George was trying to get his own whiskey to drink.

Even tho' Geoff spoke in the Behind The Scenes about the Metallica version, (about the words sung) he also talked about the differing word usage in the traditional versions. I feel he really came down in between, with a heavier lean towards the traditional, but much updated. I really do not hear Metallica in this at all. What I love in it is the very 'full' sound of the harmonies. I almost feel as satisfied as if there had been a fiddle in it, but there are no notes that would seem to be replacing a fiddle. It is the very fullness (or perhaps as Qofy called it 'strength'). It is in the way VP seems to manage almost a wall of sound in their harmonies. And all that just sounds to me like an updated version of a traditional song.
