when browsing for books to read, i always look for book reviews. this year has certainly brought up some great and not so great reads but i've found some favorite books nonetheless. that is why i bring you a reaction to your weird reading habits, the music you listen to, and overall unpopular bookish opinions that quickly turned into a very chatty video about the books i've read recently and me losing my mind over some of the new book releases of 2024/popular book releases. booktube and booktok have buzzed about some of these books… but did i enjoy them? i hope you guys enjoy this one and come out with more books to add to your TBR and some good book recommendations for 2024!

I prefer reading on my Kindle, but also keeping track in a physical copy of the book to see where I am. Besides the fact that I often end up paying for books twice because of that (unless I can get the ebook from the library), I absolutely have to move my bookmark after every single chapter. It doesn’t matter if the chapter was literally 3 pages.

My weirdest reading habit is that if I find a typo or grammar error in a book that editing missed, if I plan to keep it I will actively cross out the error and fix it myself by writing over it. I blame 4 years of English Lit in uni, and almost 10 years of being an English teacher XD

🤯Right now I am using a set of Harry Potter magnetic bookmarks and before I start reading a book I first need to determine which HP character will match the book theme. Also, before I start a physical book, I put a tab every 30 pages (if the 30 pages falls in the middle of a chapter, I put the tab at the beginning of the next chapter) and every time I get to a tab, it feels like an accomplishment. That helps me read more. I also laugh out loud, gasp and sometimes talk back to the characters 🤓

I once read an article about people who read the last page of a book tend to enjoy the book more! Something about not being anxious about how it’s gonna end and not rushing through the book. Chapter looking is something I totally do! I read more of the book/ faster if chapters are short. I occasionally read ebooks but I have an old kindle that only shows % of book not how much to end of chapter and I hate it bc I won’t start a new chapter, but will if I read it on kindle app on phone bc it tells me how much is left on chapter. 😂 I think I need a new kindle!

Or the opposite if I’m unable to get into a book but don’t know why, I’ll look up 5 star reviews to get motivated to continue on 😅. I might start trying the mood board idea. 🤯

1) I binge read so I can usually only buy completed series. I don't want to forget details and I don't have time to re-read. Also I just get excited to continue reading. Only exceptions are A Song of Ice and Fire and Stormlight Archive. 2) I have a timer while reading and every 50 / 100 pages (depends on length of book) is a new lap so I can predict how long it will take to finish. 3) Instead of proper bookmarks I use cut up bits of paper. Before I start I put one at every 50 / 100 pages (depends on above) and at the end. I also put one on the chapter I am on and the next several chapters which are updated as I am reading. They are all placed at different heights so I know what they mean. My current book has 21 bookmarks. 4) I can't read for short amounts of time. I have to have at least an hour to just sit and read without distraction.

Or I’m in the middle of a sentence and before finishing it I go back and start it over again. I have no idea why I do this and it frustrates me to not end because it takes me ages to finish a chapter, especially since I’m a slow reader to begin with. But like Mel said, I’ve learned to stop fighting it and just let it happen if that’s the only way I can read now. I have to have just the right bookmark as well! ----- I usually have several books going at once. ----- I find I'll enjoy the book less if I dislike the cover. ----- I'm a mood reader as well, which is why I have so many books on the go at once. But I never unhaul books unread. It may take me years to read them, but I *will* read them. Or, at least, attempt to read them. I have absolutely no qualms with DNFing. ----- I used to act out the dialogue as a kid, accents and all. An unfortunate side effect, my kids constantly make fun of my weird, everchanging accent lol. ----- I remove dust jackets when I read because I find them annoying and distracting. ----- I go literally nowhere without reading material, even from room to room in my home (with the exception of the bathroom and loo lol). ----- My weird reading habits: ---> I have, like a daily plan thing. Like, the first book I read on Mondays is Miscellaneous (like library books, ongoing series etc), Tuesdays is NonFiction, Wednesdays is Fiction, Thursdays is Poetry/Plays/Flash Fiction/Graphic Novel/Manga etc, Fridays is Fanfics, Saturdays is whichever non fanfic book I'm closest to finishing, and Sundays is free choice. I might only read a small amount before moving on to something I'm more in the mood for, but that's where I start. ---> When I sit down to read, I'll read a minimum of 10 pages or 1 scene section (whichever is shorter) before moving on to another book. ---> Without the influence of outside forces (like having to go to get back to work or something) have to finish reading on a chapter which is a multiple of 5 or, if it's not possible, then a chapter which is a multiple of 3. ---> I prefer to read until the end of a chapter. It isn't possible, then a scene break. At the very least, I will finish the paragraph, even if it means negative consequences for me.

When it comes to series I always buy them one at a time and won’t buy the next till I finish the one I’m currently on. I also prefer to wait till at least the final book publication date is announced to start the series

I can read with noise in the background as long as it’s noise i don’t care about. My husband watching a movie i don’t care to watch, i can easily read on the couch with him. I’m at my in laws for a holiday and they’re all being loud and crazy, i can cozy up in the corner and tune them out. BUT if i have a booktube video on in the background or music with lyrics, i can’t tune it out because i want to pay attention to those things! 🤯

I have to read every single day, even if it's 5 pages, otherwise i lose the habit of reading (It's related to my adhd, cause if it isn't a habit, I won't remember to do stuff)

I try not to buy unless the whole series is out. So I read and I like I need to be able to buy the next one I hate waiting like I did with butcher and black bird. And the ice breaker one. Like waiting on day dream is ugh 5:50

Hey, I’ve also put a book in the freezer. Years ago I read Pet Cemetery by Stephen King. Got so scared (I was a teen) that I threw the book to the back of the freezer. Never finished it. And never picked up a Stephen King book again.

I put a tab in every hundred pages (rounded up to the closest chapter) if I'm in ebook I write it on my notes app which chapter I want as my next goal. I don't begin reading until I do this. 🫣 I NEED a paper or bookmark under the line I'm on, or I lose my place. Those are my big ones.
